The Swamp of Sadness is actually a perfect metaphor for grief. I realized one day, after my husband passed away, that I was slogging through the Swamp of Sadness on a daily basis, trying to keep moving forward and not think about anything, lest I get overwhelmed by the sadness and then sucked down, never to come back up again. It made it a tiny bit easier to deal with, because I understood the quest then: just keep slogging until you get out of the swamp. (Or a luck dragon comes to rescue you.)

I suggest you to read the book and find the true meaning of the Swamp of Sadness. Is a state of mind from someone with too much negativity like Artax and how a Toxic friendship can influence you to the point of dragging you into a swamp of sadness even if you're the one holding the power. The Auryin presents the setting of your state of mind.
@fraupoppy5 ай бұрын
@@shodannadohs4045 read it first when I was five (as a German Kid you basically grow up with that book) I think I might have readyl it eight or nine times throughout my life. The last time was in my thirties and it felt very different to me in every read. How you interpret the whole Story is very dependent in you age, experiences and overall life circumstances. So your interpretation is as wright and as wrong as the next one's. I felt very touched and connected when I read the original comment.

@@fraupoppy If you have already read books which Michael Ended based this one like The Kabbalah or The Bahavad or even the Bibble you will get EXACTLY what Michael Ende meant in the Neverending Story. Is basically a book with advices based on these books. There's a Parallel between Falcor and Artax regarding frienships and there's another between Atreyu and Xaide. Ende also pushes his own opinions on religion and even Jesus Christ in the book. Is not hard too see if you already know the books he based the Neverending Story on.
@fraupoppy5 ай бұрын
@@shodannadohs4045 funny you would say that. I fact checked and found a quote by Michael Ende: every interpretation is the right one, as long as it's a good one. Kind of the way Karl Konrad Koreander did.

Yes, Artax's sinking was even more desperately sad in the book because Artax could talk; he was a proper character by that point and he was talking to Atreyu as he sank. The fact of having kept Gmork hidden, with the figure fully revealed only during the final confrontation with Atreyu is also closer to the book, where Gmork appeared in Fantasia as a shapeless mass of darkness, which only later became a real wolf. Furthermore, in the book, we learned that Gmork does not have a wolf or human form (when he appears in our world), since he does not have his own homeland. So it is likely that being rooted in a form close to that of a world that is being destroyed by Nothing (which is a method, a means. But IT IS NOT who is behind the destruction of Fantasia) contributes to making it weaker.

From memory, in the book, Atreyu finds him chained up in Spook City, a dark metropolis full of witches, vampires, werewolves etc. All the inhabitants of the city have just been seen grotesquely dancing into the Nothing and throwing themselves in. However Gmork was chained up before they all left, so he's the only one left. He had been on the trail of Atreyu, when the Princess of Spook City lured and trapped him after she learned his mission. As another being of Fantasia, her was technically her enemy, even though they were both creatures of darkness. Gmork has quite a lengthy conversation with Atreyu. READ IT!

I always thought that Gomork's voice when he says "shreds" sounds a lot like someone talking with a mouth full of sharp teeth and it seemed remarkably appropriate.

Quality film, great puppeteering, brilliant story & child actors that could actually act exceptionally well! Looking at a certain Philosophers Stone 👀 Nice One Minty!! 😄 I had a huge fear of Werewolves/Giant Black Wolves as a child with reoccurring nightmares for years. So when Gmork stuck his head out i nearly died.. 🤣🤣🤣

It was until I was about, oh, 40 years old that I wouldn't find a reason to leave the room when the Gamork leapt out at the end. Four year old me was truly terrified by that. I'll spend the next few decades on getting over Artax...

I read the book for the first time last month. I was confused when I got to the part where Sebastian meets the Empress. In the movie, that's where it ends. In the book, you're only half way through. I had no idea there was so much more to the story.
@fitnessabcvideo5 ай бұрын
Yes, the sequel, kind of tried to finish off the first book, but the scripts and Hollywood messed that potential.
@oddish43525 ай бұрын
A faithful adaptation would have been way too long. And since chapters 1-12 were largely Atreyu's story and 13-26 were Bastian's, it was a good place to stop.
@rhyspatterson6795 ай бұрын
I just wrote a way to long comment about that too it being only half the book and you don’t get to see who or what the real villian is in the movie. I put a spoiler tag warning but just wanted to say enough to get people interested in reading it and said who the villian was and why but not what happens or how it ends it’s too good reading itself yourself but I get why the author hated it. He just needs the perspective that if you see the movie first you understand the lure of the villain more beacuse we all love the never ending story so much

I read the book for the first time in the early 2000s. I also didn't officially learn what Bastian named her until I worked with manager at Hot Topic in 1998 who I asked coz she had a HUGE auryn tattoo on her back she yelled MOONCHILD! At me . I still teach people my age that coz they never should figure out what he yelled either! Lol.
@rhyspatterson6795 ай бұрын
@@Sindollx666x omg it took me decades to figure out what he yelled till I worked at a children’s theater who had an ASL person for signing for the deaf do a movie night for deaf kids. We basically rigged up a bunch of lights on a stage around the screen that did different things and separate box below the screen with text. But some kids were too young for text so the ASL lady was off on the side signing up a storm and she did this huge sign when he screams and the second the show ends I grab her backstage and practically assault her if she doesn’t tell me the name he screams. She laughed so hard because I knew the sign for moon but not child so I was practically shaking her “moon what? Moon what!” Apparently if I had bothered to turn on closed captions at any point during my childhood I would have figured it out because that’s how she knew but It was a bit before cc was widely known thing so didn’t fault myself too hard lol

Congratulations on the 500K subscribers. I love your channel because you bring back childhood memories and nostalgic to me. Movies I grew up with and even had forgotten some of them I absolutly adore The NeverEnding Story. It was the first ever movie we rented on VHS tape and my dad had to fast foward the Artax scene every time we watched it. I've met the Atreyu actor at a Dutch version of comic con and a couple of years ago finally bought my own Auryn necklace. The child in me sometimes still wishes for Falkor to appear and wisk me away on far away adventures

Gmork says that the reason he's weak is because he was hunting Atreyu for so long. When Falkor saved Atreyu in the Swamps of Sadness, Gmork had no trail to follow and no idea where Atreyu was going, so he had been searching blindly for him, practically chasing his tail. So he was weak from exhaustion. In the book, pretty much the same thing. Gmork chased Atreyu towards the Dead Mountains, only to lose the trail there. He searched in random places until he came to Spook City, where he was fed and nurtured by the dark princess until he let slip his mission and was leashed to a magic chain only the dark princess could remove. By the time Atreyu stumbled upon him, he was near death from starvation. In the end, Gmork was just a tool for "the power behind the Nothing" no doubt deluded that his service will earn him a share of the power, but the Nothing destroying Fantasisa (or Fantastica whichever you prefer) had nothing to do with him being weak. It was the Neverending hunt that weakened him.

Gamork is the only one with a clear grasp of what’s unfolding and what the end result is going to be… he’s resolved to being a servant to that end. I figure he’s a manifestation of the nothing, like a summoned henchman or something.

Grew up watching this from the year it was released, then got a friend to make a VHS copy which i still have to this day. Grabbed the DVD when it first came avail, i still remember telling my friends in college in the late 90's early 2k's that The Neverending Story was my favorite movie of all time (many laughed, only a few said wow, i love that movie, but as i got older more and more people would agree with me) and that i learned something new about life every time i watched it such a deeply touching and amazing adventure drama. I always get a copy for family and friends children, to share the magic of Fantasia. Thank you for making a great video showing the history and alternate versions of scenes.

There is an Arcade Game called Fantasy Zone, made by Sega. It appears to have been inspired by The Neverending Story... as there is a section within in, where you ride a Dragon that is very similar to Falco (the luck dragon). Sega was known for taking Inspiration from movies... like Afterburner II, taking inspiration from the movie Top-Gun.

A couple of years ago, I bought a Japanese copy of the Blu-ray. It is the original German cut. The movie is in English.
@KRAFTWERK2K65 ай бұрын
yeah at one point the german original cut was eventually getting a Blu-ray release. The first german Blu-ray release only contained the International cut, which pissed off a LOT of people, including myself. They said they could not find a Copy of the german cut.. yeah right. Constantin Film had eventually licensed the movie to other countries and that also included the original Petersen cut. And yes, an english version of that same cut always existed since this was an international production. As a result It was entirely shot in english too from the beginning.

The movie and the book changed my life back in 1984 when I was 14 years old. The first matte painting of the Ivory Tower in The Neverending Story is responsible for me wanting to become involved in illustration and create fantasy worlds like that for a living. From that moment on I was addicted to fantasy landscapes. We didn’t had mass media or internet in 1984 so no access to this type of fantasy material for a kid, so I had to pick up my pencils and watercolors and start imagining my own fantasy lands. Which lead me to where I am today as a freelance artist since I started professionally back in 1992. All because of this movie and book. I’ve read the book more than 50 times, I read it twice a year at least as it is my go to fantasy work when I need inspiration. When I was 14 and saw the movie one afternoon at the theater, I was so blown away by the Ivory Tower landscape that when the movie ended , I went back in again to see it once more in the next session. I got both cuts on Blu-ray . Germany released a great 4K remaster of the original cut actually which is awesome. The movie just does not look different on what you mention. The color palette of the original is also different. The international Spielberg cut is super colorful , almost Disney , but the original has an atmospheric sepia old parchment look all over, like a Lord of the Rings movie actually. The original cut when it comes to text is way more closer to the book. The international version dubbed a ton of dialogue and replaced a lot of more complex lines for simple versions , which infantilized the story more and diluted the original intention of the book. For example, the Gmork at the end in the original cut is closer to the book in the way it points to him actually also being a victim of the nothing and not just a servent. Oh and the original voice of the snail rider , weird as it was , it’s the real actors voice as Deep Roy really sounded like that. Although the international cut changed my life, now that also own the original cut , I don’t know which one is better. Although I love the classic limahl pop theme, the fact that the music credits in the original feel more like they belong in The Exorcist makes more sense for the intro . Remember that Bastian is awaking from a nightmare so in the international version having those beautiful happy credits and song makes no sense. And that goes for a lot of stuff in the movie. The original version is way closer to the haunting atmosphere of the book for sure but I understand why Spielberg changed stuff for American audiences. Still both cuts are still one of those movies for kids that actually don’t treat children like dumb idiots. It’s a deep story that resonates with adults for the themes it carries and that is why adults love the book too. It’s neither children or adult material but the perfect balance between the two worlds. And I think the message of the book is still there even though Michael Ende hated the result. The only thing bad and out of place is the happy revenge on the bullies end where Bastian and falkor come to our world. Is too much like a Disney movie and has nothing to do with the book. Although it’s fun. The movie only covers about 35% of the novel and that whole adventure is more like an intro to what happens next in the book. The movie sequel done in the 90s totally simplified the rest of the book to an infantile level beyond belief. The second movie has a beautiful soundtrack though but not even could save what the creators of that disappointment did to the book. The second movie was now a full Hollywood production and it shows in the way they took a complex second part of the book and totally dumbed it down. And let’s not even talk about movie 3 which was more like a giant commercial for McDonald’s …and has zero to do with the novel. Movie 3 didn’t even tried. Anyway great video. I hadn’t seen any image of the deleted scene with the giant. I’m glad they cut that out as it’s not in the context of the book either. Now I need to go read the book again…thanks Minty 😂

@@Sindollx666x You can also read more details about the original cut on my Forgotten Movies blog. You can google translate my text in there directly and Google actually does a pretty good job in converting Portuguese into English, so give it a try. I mention a lot of stuff that Minty left out too. The fact is that the original cut feels so different than the version we all know that it´s hard to describe it as mostly has to do with dialogues and sound. The american spielberg cut simplified a lot of the text and removed some darker important lines. If you know the international version really well, you will love the original cut as it really feels weird and different and at first you can´t point out why. If you love the book, then now you need to check the original cut as the mood is way closer to the haunted feel of the novel than the Disneyfied Spielberg Cut we all knew at first. :)
