I was 11 in 1987 and enjoyed The Tracey Ulman show but my friends and I loved the animated sketches we called “the Bart part”. When The Simpsons debuted I taped every episode on the VCR and my friends and I would parrot jokes back and forth to each other in class. The Simpsons became a skeleton key for unlocking friendships. If I was meeting somebody for the first time I’d ask “do you like the Simpsons” and if they said “yes” we immediately became friends. I think it would have been more special if show ended when the movie came out. Coincidentally I fell out of love around the same time. To this day, I quote the show to friends as a joke and shorthand to comment on any situation in life.

I remember my co-workers and I took a long lunch to visit a Kwik-E-Mart which was located across the street from a theater playing the "The Simpson Movie". We were in Simpson heaven. The shirt colour could be down to the format of US television in the pre digital age. In those days, they used NTSC whereas places like Australia and the UK used PAL. NTSC has more frames per second but a lower resolution. So it's possible that it was red when viewed in the original NTSC but orange when watched in the converted to PAL version. NTSC is also often referred to as "Not Twice Same Colour" within the industry as it doesn't always display the colours as well as the PAL format, so they could also be part of it. However, now that the show has produced digitally for over a decade, it should be more clear as to which colour it is and it still looks orange to me. Maybe those people have the colour settings on their TVs set up differently. Also, orange gets it's name from the fruit, before that, anything orange was referred to as red.

I remember all the trailers and commercials for the Simpsons and the day before it premiered my Dad got stationed in Germany so I never got to watch it until the 3rd season lol my kids know this story because I was so so hyped for it at 13 years old and it was ripped out of my grasps for years. It never aired on AFN the armed forces network overseas until season 3 lol

From Chicago I remember in a year when 7/11 was coming up there was a single 7 Eleven that was turned into a Quickie Mart. We closed our business to go and get a limited edition cup for aSlurpee. The whole place was converted to a Quickie Mart including the sign. Was just awesome.

It's feels kind of weird to have watched the cartoon short on Tracy Ullman as a kid, having no idea what it would turn into.

I've not watched in probably 20 years. It's not funny anymore.

That is so far from true... If you haven't watched in 20 years, how do you know it's no longer funny? Sure, they've had some stinkers... and currently, Julie Kavner can barely perform Marge's voice anymore... but the show is still funny. And I'm NOT a kid... I watched the earliest version on the Tracy Ullman show, and have watched EVERY Sunday ever since!

When the season ended maybe 15 years ago, I lost interest in catching up on new episodes. Maybe only saw a couple episodes since, such as a Christmas episode where the family is broke and turns their house into a bed and breakfast to strangers. I hoped it'd tap into that Hall of Fame Boy Meets World episode where they do the same to their neighbor's house. Nowhere near as good and convinced me too I wasn't missing anything. This video sums up how the show plays it way too safe this century versus it's first decade

Great presentation Mark! Brings back fond memories! I used to race home to watch it with my 2 children, they could not read yet but when the opener with Bart and the black board started they would yell "Read the sign daddy read the sign" Then after the show I would have to explain it!

I'm 38 years old and have been watching the Simpsons my entire life. I am going to cry when it goes off the air. It is EASILY the best show of all time. I'm going to Universal Studios in 2 weeks because I heard they're shutting down the Simpsons area. Going to go enjoy it one last time.

The one and only reason I wasn't allowed to watch when it came out is because Bart called Homer by his name instead of dad.

As a child, this show meant the world to me. I was such a poor student. But even when my dad was mad at me for forgetting a homework assignment, procrastinating until the day before a project was due, or seeing my report card, we always dropped what we were doing to watch the show together.

Shockingly here in Canada our national broadcaster CBC would play reruns of the Simpsons everyday after school. I watched a ton thanks to it! As a Leftie I always loved the episode when Flanders started a store full of left handed utensils & tools 😂 On a more thoughtful note I was also really inspired by the episode when Lisa became a Vegetarian and met with Paul & Linda McCartney at Apu’s rooftop terrace. It’s was a great episode about accepting different cultures, believes & ways of living. Despite the flack it got, the Simpsons really could be profound. I learned a lot of good lessons from it and lament that most modern entertainment lacks those deeper messages 😐 You almost have to credit the show for raising and teaching our generation in the absence of parents, religion, etc.
