Yup, Tim Berners-Lee, a Brit, invented the http protocol in 1989 that drives the Web though he was working at CERN in Geneva at the time. There is though a lot more to the Internet than just the Web, and Brits made contributions to that as well (e.g.packet switching).

@michw37552 жыл бұрын
Yes, but he didn't invent the Internet, he invented the means to access websites, until then people only had access to a site if they knew the address to access a site, so was only accessible to certain people, the www made it possible for anyone to have access to a website, hence where we are today.
@philroue2 жыл бұрын
@@michw3755 No, he invented the http protocol, for sending hypertext documents (I.e. web pages) over the Internet. You're thinking of DNS, that coverts web addresses into their corresponding IP addresses, that are then used to generate an http request. This is what browsers like Chrome do under the cover. DNS has been around since the 1970s, though the Internet as it was then had limited access, mostly military and universities, and everything was text based, no fancy web pages like now, which http made possible.

Also worth noting that the money given to the queen is calculated as a percentage of the income the crown estates give to the country. Not sure why you are surprised about the IQ for those who regularly view KZbin it is plainly obvious that many (present channel excepted) Americans are a sandwich short of a picnic. Quite a number of Americans it seems don't know how many stars and stripes are on the US flag which they seem to drape about themselves ( which is against the US flag code by the way.) in the name of patriotism. Perhaps you guys don't learn the significance of those in school, which would be odd to say the least. Intelligence is not governed by knowledge alone though , it is the ability to understand, apply and utilize that knowledge for other endeavours. It appears to the outside world that for many Americans their knowledge of the world is limited to their state, not even the US as a whole and generally they don't seem to think there is any valid reason for them to need to learn more than that. To my knowledge (without Googling) there are 2 US states that use the Union flag , Hawaii (illegally annexed by the US) and Alabama , check out the Alabama coat of arms. I can't watch the majority of American documentaries as they come across as extremely dumbed down. Also after what is probably every commercial break you guys seem to have forgotten everything so they have to spend a bit of time repeating the information from before the break. Neil de Grasse Tyson's work though is an exception, he is a very intelligent, capable and engaging communicator and presenter. You Joel are breaking away though as you have a general interest in learning and understanding the world outside the US borders so would not doubt that your intelligence is above the US average.

When it comes to writing books, one factor that might contribute is the emphasis on fiction writing that exists, or at least did exist, in British schools. I don't know if it is still the case but thirty-odd years ago some friends of mine moved from the US to the UK. They had a 14-year-old daughter. She was horrified when she was given for homework the task of writing a 1000 word story with the only direction that it should include a description of the landscape. To be honest I don't think any of them were "A reach." Americans have a very hard time when it comes to realising that they aren't the best at everything they do. We brits do a lot of things that don't compare with other countries, but we tend to freely admit it.
@Jeni102 жыл бұрын
If you ask a young American which they would rather do, watch a movie or read the book that inspired the screenplay, what would they say? You can survey this at your own college and see what happens. Might even be a good topic for an essay or a project. Don’t forget to factor in their reasons too.

Its interesting, maybe some of the differences come down to the education system in part I think in the UK the education system is much more centrally regulated. If I remember the USA can change things from state to state if you add in the more religious elements to this you then get bans on some kinds of science education, some kinds of literature this will affect people working in those fields. But also as you pointed out for the internet there is a difference between rural and urban USA maybe this also Affects book writing, education, and people is the science field given the measurements are per head.
@peterjf77232 жыл бұрын
I have the impression school pupils in the US are not expected to have ideas of their own and be able to support those ideas until they get to university. The GOP in Texas actually tried (unsuccessfully as far as I know) to ban the teaching of thinking skills in schools, in case it led children to question parental and religious authority. Here in the UK, we’ve started to teach metacognition - how to think about how you think - at primary school (ages 7-11).

The Union Flag is on the State flag of Hawaii, because, basically we did what we always did and claimed it. I vaguely remember something about the either the British allowed, a native Hawaian Queen to rule, as a puppet, or we left them to run it, I'm not sure. But there was a queen in place, ruling her people. At the time there were a lot of Americans living on the islands, and had businesses they had built up, so when they thought that all the white people were going to be kicked off the islands, they staged at coup, and took over the government and deposed the Queen. Claiming the islands for the US. Which is why President Clinton issued a formal apology to the people of Hawaii, for illegally over throwing the sovereign nation of Hawaii. But because of our previous claim to the islands, our flag was incorporated into their flag.

That bit about wind power is utter rubbish, we don't supply enough power for our own country let alone anyone else, when the wind stops the turbines stop, we need to carry on drilling in the north sea and start fracking.
@ImpaledGryphon2 жыл бұрын
i'm sat here in a small northern english town on a 1 gigabit internet connection a little faster than a rural american town i think (recently upgraded from 350mbit), the intelligence one surprises me a bit i thought the us would have been lower as in the 70's a large "brain drain" took place with people fleeing the uk's government, unions and taxation problems thus boosting the american score but those people would now be retired or even dead, maybe some of it rubbed off on americans.

The education differences between the US and UK may be in part due to differences in teaching. The US education system in many (not all) states, prioritises rote learning rather than teaching kids how to actually think. The GOP in Texas actually tried (unsuccessfully as far as I know) to ban the teaching of thinking skills in schools, in case it led children to question parental and religious authority. Whereas in the UK, we’ve started to teach metacognition - how to think about how you think - at primary school (ages 7-11). English A-Levels are considered equivalent to 2nd year at a US university and 1st year at a Scottish one.
@Thurgosh_OG2 жыл бұрын
No where; can I find any reference saying that A-levels are equivalent to 2nd Yr Uni but I can find some that say that Scotland's Advanced Highers (used to be called Sixth Year Studies or SYS), are the equivalent of 1st Yr Uni level. As far as I can remember Adv Highers have always been at a 'higher' level of education than A-levels (which are equivalent to Highers, though sometimes more recognised ).

On off shore wind farms, we do have a lot more sea compared to land than the US. But I don't know where the energy export idea comes from, we import energy, not just fossil fuels but electricity.
@chitster2 жыл бұрын
The US has a much larger coastal area than the UK, they have a lot more sea than we do, they even have massive lakes that could be used for wind farms, the reason is they put most of their money into their military and everything else is secondary

Hey, College-man. It was so obvious that you hadn't ever given any thought to these kinds of metrics that I felt dreadfully sorry you stumbled onto all of this in one small video...and in public! But as a couple of people said: you - and other Reacters - are having an impact. Your online presence is making people more aware of how the world works; making people question; helping to break the grip that American Exceptionalism and State-sanctioned religion has had on the Education system post-WWII. And by making friends & acquaintances in other cultures you're able to tap into the opinions and mind-states; the experiences & lifestyles; the feelings of unity and responsibilities, we *all* share across the globe. That's huge!! I was invited to teach at a Uni in China for one year: stayed for 7. Because the people I was teaching were the first generation to get to Uni since Opening & Expansion & the One Child Policy. And they all went through the same things as soon as they learned about the outside world. They too learned that things they'd believed since they were tiny were incorrect. They too found it difficult to accept that the rest of the world didn't look at them the way they'd always been told that they did. They learned that theirs was not the greatest country in the world. That too, is huge. But for most of us? We *know* we aren't the greatest. Our education doesn't just stick to the good bits. Nor does that of our neighbours around the world. And our media look outward, as well as inward. Thus we learn just how bad we are as we go: it isn't revealed to us all in a ten min. video! But no matter how we learn about our country's shortcomings - the next, positive step is to start thinking about how they can be fixed.

The UK has virtually invented everything in the modern world since the Industrial Revolution we even invented that too. As for the books and Authors part the USA is only around 400 yrs old the UK on its various guises is over 1000 yrs old so we effectively would have effectively had double the time and some for great writers of book, plays etc etc

If the film relies on 2015 data, then most of the segments if not all are out of date. I would expect the Internet speed to have changed significantly. @mickylove762 жыл бұрын
The US education system has been on a downward decline for generations. Poor literacy, numeracy and science literacy, poor understanding of the world outside its bubble. The idea exists that everyones opinion is equally valid, no matter how ignorant one is about something. Also the sheer religiosity, and substitution of critical thinking skills with magic and wishful thinking makes it impossible to really move forward as a society.
