I had to go natural and get to know my real hair before I understood why relaxed hair care was so hard for me. Health was not the focus…”getting rid of the naps” was. Breakage was just a normal part of my life! for YEARS! I’m glad there’s more nuance and discernment in the black hair care space. Thank you both for helping to educate! 👏🏾👏🏾

I can’t imagine ever relaxing again. I’m a person who sweats in the scalp. I love not worrying about sweat or rain. I love washing my hair every 4-5 days, I’m retired and I have time for it. Thanks to Black Girl Curls it takes 1 1/2 to 2hrs to complete my look.

I always hear people talk about relaxers being easy but they’re not. I used to go to the salon every 2 weeks, no wonder I had issues. Every hair style requires maintenance and care.

Relaxer was harder for me because neither I nor my mother had that education for maintenance. I didn't wear bonnets consistently til high school. Didn't know about cotton eating up your hair or any basics.

After 9 years I was so fed up with my natural hair and the whole community that I got a relaxer. Less than a year later I’m back to natural. My hair didn’t grow as fast and required so much more to maintain. Glad to be back with my TWA

I had fine strands when I wore a relaxer. My hair and scalp were always dry, my styles never lasted because I sweat in my scalp and my ends were always dry.

I agree with Roni (she's my stylist by the way, I found her watching BGC on KZbin and she has been a God send!!) we go with what we know and that's why it seems easier. The learning curve is steeper with my natural hair because I simply did not know my natural hair. I didn't start learning it with PROPER INFORMATION until 10 months ago. I will say though that my last relaxer was in 1999 but I continued to straighten it. Also there doesn't feel like much room for error with our natural hair. Alot of the flaws in our previous hair care practices and the condition of our hair we may have been able to cover up a bit easier and still walk out with confidence. Only a really trained eye would notice before. Natural hair exposes EVERYTHING!! and that's a tough pill to swallow. many of us can't deal with that level of vulnerability and humility. I would love for you all to do 10 things for simply heating styling w/o a relaxer. Sometimes it seems as if there's only two camps, natural (curls) and relaxed.

We have some plans to get into heat styling this fall.

I'd be curious for discussion on keratin treatments. I have dense hair and went from being fully natural to doing keratin treatments 1-2 times a year for manageability.

Auntie Jones, here. You guys were great. Can you make a house call, Roni?😁

When I had very short hair I wore a relaxer for about a year, maybe a little less. I hadn’t previously considered (because I didn’t know) that short hair needs more frequent touch ups. My hair soon began to feel dryer and thinner. I quickly went back to natural.

I wish I knew back in the day when I had relaxer what I know now. I used to have those Clairol heated rollers. I just donated my electric hot comb.

3:04 time the famous question- do you oil your scalp with this method?
