keep your mouth shut is very important. For example: when I was in highschool I found a way to crack the beverage machine. I told this to a "friend" and told him to keep it for himself. Our secret. yeah well, it took only a few hours before the whole school knew and plundered the machine. If I had kept my mouth shut, I could have used the hack for years on end every day. But the "friend" wanted to exploit the knowledge to be cool. Also another example: I went to a summercamp when I was 14 and there was a 3 day hike planned. I packed 2 pairs of socks, my knife, lighters and 6 bottles of water with vitamins in. Everybody laughed at me for taking so much water with me. Then later in the hike, the weather became really hot and everybody ran out of water except for me, guess what? I had to give them my water and when I ran out they did not believe me and became violent. They took my bag and were even more angry because they found nothing. So there you have it: if you have supplies or means to get it: just don't tell anyone!

And don’t bug out to live off the land. These are OUR animals (food source) and most city folk don’t know about not polluting our water sources. So no, we won’t take kindly to bug outers looking for food, water, and shelter cuz you can’t backpack out enough food for your family for 3 months if you even make it thru the initial winter. We moved specifically here from the city to get away from shtf in our homes, sold a lot to be here. We listened to the prepper sites saying “get out of the city”. Please don’t bring all that chaos with you.

I know that sounds cold and I don’t mean it as cold but it just is. As we watched friends go on expensive vacations, bought new houses, new cars, we prepared instead. So having empathy is asking a lot of us and time is running short now. I get asked about canning, freezing and do as much as I can to help but jars are currently unavailable. The cost of food has skyrocketed, jars unavailable, canners gone, and I can’t help those who want a quick & easy fix as there isn’t one. Winter’s coming and if the animal’s behavior is any indication, it’s going to be epic! Get your family plans in place NOW. Like I said, TIME’S SHORT. You’all can feel it too.

I have been slowly preparing for the grid to go down for over 3 months now. I'm newly married 4 years now, he is in denial that it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. I finially showed him my bug out bag that I have put together and have in my trunk. He was stunned at my creativity, but it was only after I looked him on the eyes and said "Baby, so listen... I have a 60 mile drive from work. I want you to know if something ever happens and we loose communication know that I will make it home, please don't panic, I can hold my own". When I said this I think it finially hit him that the time to prepare is now. Later that evening he approached me and said "I want to to know how much I admire your intellegance and strength, remember I love you and if something ever happened and I be right here waiting for you to come home". I almost broke down but instead smiled and said "I know you will". I grew up in the country on s resveration where running water and electricity was a luxury. He grew up in the suburbs. I’ve spent 16yrs prepping my house for SHTF. Got myself a farmhouse thats 26min walk from the nearest population centre. We grow our own vegetables, have some chickens for eggs and meat. A natural spring gives fresh water; solar and wind for electricity. Enough food in the basement for 3months for the family. We can totally lock down and secure the property in 11mins (myself, wife and daughter all have specific roles). Most importantly, my house doesn’t look out of place. It’s a fortress that looks like any other farmhouse in the area, so we don’t attract attention. Few years back we had a really bad winter and were snowed in for 2weeks. Main power went out. We hunkered in and lived like everything was normal. Prepping doesnt mean going for zombies or apocalypse, but just for the bad times too. Storms, power outages or just being stranded. One of the most important things we learned we needed was entertainment. We had the food/water/power we needed, but being stuck in a house together will send you mad. Deck of cards and a couple of books can go a long way to alleviate tention
@CyanLink5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, too much nuclear zombie war talk in the prepper community. It makes my eyes roll at this point. People don't realize how much it sucks to just lose water and power for a couple weeks. Have a couple guns sure. But food, water, some emergency medical and something to keep yourself entertained will get you through most scenarios. Oh and learn skills. Skills weigh nothing and can't be stolen. Having gear and not knowing how to use it doesn't do any good.

I get what you mean...too much nonsense scenarios floating around. We get Hurricane islanded without electric or road access every other year or so for about a month. You figure it out. It stinks...but necessity is the mother of invention (but stupid is deadly). I guess a lot of people are just completely ignorant because they weren't raised even the slightest bit country. Some people run generators in their houses...or eat poke. They just don't know. ..it isn't really their fault they don't know...just not in their culture to know things that keep you living without modern conveniences. How do you not help those people? In a teach them to fish kinda way? IDK. Lots of fear mongering. We are not Afghans. We are not Iraqi's. We aren't like the places we invade...I think it sets up misconceptions. If the shit hits the fan around here we check on our neighbors we don't hide from them and once we know our neighbors are okay we venture out farther to see if we can find someone to help.

ScoutSniper Chickens will eat the grains out of the horse/cow manure....and you can make maggot buckets out of road kill. Just drill holes in the bottom of the bucket and the maggots drop out and feed the chickens. Easy peasy. The trick is getting them to stay on their eggs where they're safe. Damned brooders always want to be where the hawks and raccoons can pick them off easy...try to move them without breaking their squat is the hardest part. I don't mess with pigs (hogs are a pain in the ass).

Since this video is coming from a post-apocalyptic point of view, where help is more than likely not coming, I thought I'd give my prepper tips from having gone through Hurricane Michael in Florida this past October. I would have to say the damage from which was on the scale of a nuclear blast, only minus the fallout. 1. Gas (petroleum fuel) = Life: Everything runs on gasoline, cars, generators (electric water pumps and refrigerators that run on generators), chainsaws, tractors, etc. and you really don't realize how quickly you'll burn through your fuel. I would recommend to get as much fuel as you can as soon as it is safe to travel. Also, if you can get your hands on a hand pump to pump said fuel out of their containers to the intended items being fueled, your back will thank you 1000x later. 2. Cook items in your fridge and deep freeze first. They obviously have a limited shelf life if you can't get your refrigeration/freezer back up and running. 3. Having a LP grill with a side burner is a must. Thankfully my family and I had been given a Chargriller grill from a buddy of mine that was moving the year prior. It turned out to be a life saver as we were able to have hot meals every night. Of course, pointing back to item number 1, make sure you have plenty of fuel for said grill. 4. Don't be shy or timid about accepting handouts from the National Guard or from your local shelters. Believe it or not, most of them will have so much stuff to give away that they will need help getting it out of the way to allow for additional shipments to come in. In accepting what is offered to you, you are actually helping to keep the flow of supplies steadily moving and that will help others who may be late in getting in line for assistance. 5. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. You will be amazed how much water you will go through as you will probably doing manual labor 14+ hours a day to try to dig your way out of the disaster. Make sure that you're taking in enough sodium throughout the day while you're hydrating as well. You can actually get water poisoning if the sodium level in your body drops to low from constantly being flushed out with water. 6. Do help your neighbor as they will likely reciprocate the help 9 times out of 10. Even if you don't need outside assistance now, you may get into a tight spot later and having a favor to call in is a good Ace to have in your back pocket. 7. In a complete grid-down situation, you can drive across fallen power lines. If you are in an area that has had catastrophic damage do not immediately try to travel right after the incident has subsided, however, as the grid may still be energized in certain areas. Low hanging power lines are difficult enough to see and avoid in the daylight, but they are practically invisible in low-light or night time conditions. Shelter in place until you can deem traveling to be worth the risk. 8. If you do decide to connect your generator to your breaker box in your home make sure you do a few things first. A) Do have a fire extinguisher in case things go really bad. B) Make sure you flip the main off outside AND inside your home. Sending electricity back up the line can and will kill someone. C) Make sure your generator is off and that you do not connect the line from your circuit breaker box to your generator until after you have completed wiring in your line. D) Take the panel off of your breaker box to start. E)If you're using the 240 outlet on your generator to connect to your breaker box you'll need to connect the red and black (positive) wires of your 4 conductor wire to your 30amp dryer breaker. Make sure you disconnect the hot and ground wires for the dryer from the breaker and ground block in the box first. Usually your 30amp dryer breaker is a 2 slot wide breaker. One side in one slot would get the red wire and the other in the other slot would get the black wire, it doesn't matter which is which. Then the green (ground) and the white (negative) wires need to be screwed down to the ground block in the top of your breaker box. F) If you have to wire up the male 240 plug to the wire, the plug should be marked with which color wire goes where. Just make sure you don't have a crap ton of extra wire sticking out past the screw that holds the wire in place when you're done and make sure to twist the outside cover on the plug in place before inserting the plug into your generator. G) Make sure the "dryer"/generator breaker is flipped to the off position prior to starting your generator or the initial surge could fry valuable items in your home. H) For most portable generators, big items such as A/C units, deep freezes, hot water heaters, etc. will draw too much current and could damage your generator if you try to use them. For these items make sure the circuit breakers are also off prior to starting your generator. Completing all the steps above basically makes your dryer breaker your new main breaker. If all you're able to do is take cold showers and turn on the lights though, you'll be amazed how it can make you feel like the apocalypse hasn't really happened. 9. Do take pictures, do hire a public adjuster immediately (and have them file the initial claim with your insurance company), and do tarp your roof as in most insurance policies you're responsible for ensuring additional water damage does not occur after the initial damage has already occurred (the Army Corp of Engineers has a Blue Roof program you can sign up for to have your roof professionally tarped for free). 10. FEMA is a joke and won't help you so don't waste your time with them. 11. Your insurance company and any adjusters they send out are not your friends so speak to them as you would if you were being interviewed by the police in the investigation of a crime. 12. Do know how to change a tire and make sure your spare is good to go as you will probably run over debris and go through a tire or two. 13. Your cell phones won't work, so if you happen upon a place that has internet where you can send messages to loved ones (like a shelter, p.s. they may also have hot showers) make sure you end any communications with a tentative plan for the following day along with what time you will more than likely contact them back. This will save valuable daylight (remember traveling at night = not safe) by parties not having to sit around waiting on communications and it will give someone a heads up to contact help if you do not check in as planned. 14. Do have plenty of extra blades and chains and bar oil and premix fuel for your chainsaw. You'll find you use your chainsaw as much as you used to use your phone. 15. Cut from the top down to the base on trees. If you start at the base first the stump could spring back upright from the released tension after you cut it and those suckers can be super heavy, sometimes heavy enough to kill (i.e. keep small children and pets away from all work areas). 16. Four wheel drive vehicles rule the road... mainly because there won't be anymore roads, at least for the first few weeks. Having a big, long chain to use in conjunction with your 4x4 vehicle can help immensely in clearing debris and you can get very creative with the two (think, What Would Bubba Do). 17. It's quiet at night in the apocalypse, that is until it's not and the 67th siren of the day blows by. Then it's quiet again, quiet enough to hear your own heartbeat. 18. Make sure you have plenty of medical supplies as you will get the crap beat out of you by all the manual labor that is about to be your every waking moment. Rubbing alcohol, antibiotic ointment, and prescription meds that are needed are a must. Most states will suspend the need for a doctor to call in a refill for you in a state of emergency, so if you do run out of your meds just go to any pharmacy and bring them your empties to get refills. 19. If you've been wanting to go to college, post apocalypse can be a really good time to start as there may be additional scholarships available for students to offset the financial losses from the disaster. 20. You will experience feelings of anxiousness and you will always feel like you are keyed up (i.e. the adrenaline never stops), so make sure you take an extra second or two to respond to people as you will be prone to be confrontational or combative. 21. You will experience feelings of deep depression that will come upon you in an instant. In these moments take a minute to run through a checklist of your current situation and your needs therein. Most of the time you will realize you are okay and you can turn off the alarm of hopelessness so to speak. 22. When the adrenaline does stop be somewhere you can get some sleep because you will feel like your are as weak as a kitten and there is no fighting the blackout that is about to come. 23. You all remember the memes about you being dead and your boss still wanting to know if you're going to come into work, hee hee? Welllll it turns out it's not so funny when you are literally almost dead, you still have items you have to complete for basic survival purposes, and your boss is wanting to know when you'll be at work. The good news is that there will be plenty of people hiring to do cleanup and repairs if you do tell your boss where to get off. 24. Don't be a douche, move out of the way for emergency vehicles. Seconds are the literal difference between life and death for a lot of people around you at the moment. 25. Realize it's only things and things can be replaced. If your family is safe then you have all that you need.

Yes, I went through Katrina and agree with almost all of it. Had to have a surgery in an army tent on an infection in my ear. So, bleach and some basic medical supplies would have prevented it. You can run a generator on boat gas, if you are prepared to clean filter everyday. We ran it for 2 months like that, three house connected to it. If you do use generator, it's loud as hell, because it's so quiet after grid goes down. People know you have power. But if you can run it, do so at night, if in safe area. You can run your fridge/freezer for ice. It will stay cold with 2-3 hours of run time and not opening it. Dried bleach. Number one thing I wish I had. Help each other. We really came together and it sounds like your community did as well. :)

Using your morale of "fat man in a skinny place" scenario, realize that just about everyone is going to ration food and lose weight when it's realized that help isn't coming soon. Sad really, not one of them has so much as an extra case of bottled water and I can’t get them to see the risk that they are taking. Improving my state of preparedness IS my hobby that I just love doing. I never want my wife to have to say to me,”How are we going to survive?” My recommendation to anyone reading this who isn’t prepared is to buy at a minimum of one surplus item per week or more if you can afford it. Hopefully you’ll have enough stuff in time to be able to have the right answer for your wife or family member when they ask you that same question.

He thinks it’s a waste of money having all this extra “stuff” on hand. After the supplies all ran out and most still haven’t been restocked he stopped being mad at me. It's sad that so many think it's silly to prepare. It's as simple as grabbing a few bulk sized foods (flour beans rice sugar) and a gallon of water for each family member when you visit the store. It adds up fast. A little tid bit when storing things like flour beans and rice if you put in a few bay leaves it will keep the pests out. What a horror to think you have food saved and when you need it find its all buggy. Hey bright side it's protein 😂. Stay safe friends. My latest hobby (besides preparing any way I can) is to water bath and pressure can a wife variety of foods.

Very informative video. Preparedness is no longer an ideology of craziness; it is a sound and responsible method of resiliency. People should no longer entirely DEPEND on their government in times of crisis or disaster because that system and its public safety elements WILL BE overwhelmed. Calls for service WILL BE prioritized, and the response to simple mundane 911 calls will be extremely delayed. REMEMBER that public safety personnel are most likely experiencing the same hardships as the public and it is my guess that many (Depending on the magnitude of the crisis/disaster) may not report, cannot report, or may abandon their post to protect their families. People may be under the false assumption that first responders have their own houses in order to deal with SHTF, but I will tell you that is a FALSE assumption. Many first responders are NOT prepared and have many of the same attitudes towards major calamity as the general public. YES, we may be above average in specific areas such as first aid, security, and resourcefulness BUT those skills can only take you so far. Be responsible for yourself and your family teach them the basics of first aid and security and do NOT place your entire plan on the government rescuing you.

One danger you overlooked is the uncontrolled fire. Some people will be using candles or oil lamps beginning the first night of a power outage. Others will use candles once the batteries for their camp lanterns and flash lights lose their charge. If you live in an apartment building, a townhouse or a suburban neighborhood of closely crowded starter houses and one home catches fire, that fire can quickly spread to nearby homes. If the 911 system is down or the streets are filled with debris after an earthquake or all nearby fire stations are already busy responding to other fires, a residential fire can spread unchecked and engulf everything within reach. And the larger the fire the greater a distance it will spread sparks and embers downwind to catch fire to trees and roofs. If I currently lived in a crowded location the way I used to do, you can bet I would want some of my neighbors to form a neighborhood watch for fire spotting at night and for waking up sleeping people and getting them to evacuate away from the fire. Yes, it is important to have the usual smoke detectors and fire extinguishers to stop a small fire at home, but those things are useless against a nearby uncontrolled fire that is melting the siding on your house. I believe that the uncontrolled fire is a much worse danger than looters. You can shoot a few looters to scare off the rest of the crowd but your guns and ammo are useless against a big fire.

When I had to leave one burning at night in a windowless bathroom after an earthquake knocked out the local power grid for three days, I sat the jar candle in a wide bowl half-filled with water and put the bowl in the bathtub. Even if another earthquake had rattled things around enough to knock over the jar candle, it would have been extinguished by the water. Of course lit candles are a very bad idea if the damaged neighborhood has gas lines or if you have a small child in the home who is active while you are sleeping.

If living in urban areas you can unknownly prepare your neighbors. Example I plant seeds from my apples, oranges, lemon. Then give some to my neighbor. Over the past few years our block has quite a few fruit trees. I have a large fig tree that when they are ripe I share. It's the same with them now so through the growing season we share pecans, lemon, grapefruit, oranges, tangerine,figs and many other things. I make jelly and dry stuff so now they will supply the oranges and I make the jelly. We work together now and has become a regular thing. Working together has become the norm as far as fruit harvest goes.

Look into the water makers used on sailboats. They even have hand operated ones. You can even build your own water maker system though the DIY water makers are usually less compact and less efficient. Growing sugar beets and knowing how to refine white sugar from them is an option as is having bee hives. If you're by the sea, you can get seasalt. Away from the sea, you have to look for places often near streams where salt leaches to the surface. The spice saltpeter is bird poop, it's also an ingredient in gun powder. Other spices are plants you could grow. If you grow Fenugreek and you can make sugar preferably poorly refined brown sugar, you can make fake maple syrup.

@30AndHatingIt5 жыл бұрын
@@CM-ve1bz I'm discussing an emergency situation where someone would have to get it straight from the tank itself. A lot of people either forget or don't realize they have to change the diode occasionally and the tanks get crusty and filled with sediment near the bottom... which is where the drain is... which is where they are getting the water from in an emergency... which was the point of my original comment. I would filter anything that comes from that drain to get the sediment out.

in jan 2020 we started prepping and my high school daughter thought we were crazy. Low and behold 2 months later the plandemic happened and we barely had anything at that point. Went to the grocery and the shelves were already almost empty and there was a line to get in that wrapped around the outside of the store all the way to the back. I realized at that point how vulnerable we were. When things began to normalize we prepped like crazy and we should have 6 months of supplies at this point. The funny part is, my daughter still thinks we are crazy. Kids these days! PREP NOW!!! Good luck everyone and stay safe

Great info... One observation: during a power outage (i experienced 14 days in the middle of a hot summer at 95 degrees) covering windows will not necessarily prevent people from knowing you have power as generators make considerable noise -even the quiet ones. Solar requires a large area of panels to provide meaningful power to a home - and the panels are a clear clue of a power source

If you can't afford mre's or the freeze dried food. Get can vegetables. Ramen noodles, spam can ham potted meat viana sausages. I ate a can of corn the other day that was 5 years past the best by date, no problem tasted good. Also get matzah bread. Its more like crackers. And last for years. Walmart has water purifiers for around 20.00 back in the camping area. Also buy package of bottle water its cheap right now. Also dried beans, rice, gravy mix, seasoning garlic powder salt, pepper. Peanut butter. Honey. Also don't forget toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, deodorant. Ibuprofen. Get wet wipes you can use them to clean yourself with Just a few suggestions. Also at dollar tree they have candles in a tall glass container called storm candles 1.00 each. Also don't forget to get matches. Best is strike anywhere. But they are hard to find.

I store these items by EXPIRATION DATE. Automatic rotation so I always have good product on hand. If you have a freezer, storing things that _will_ freeze, but don't _have_ to be kept cold provides backup as well. (pre-cooked bacon, jerky, nuts, pop tarts, juice in plastic bottles, etc.

And lock the cable to my driveway. And wait for a friend to arrive . I would have no love for city people . Build what needs built and keep quiet . That was years ago. Now I’m old and I hope the elevator to get dinner still works . Along with my O2 machine. And it better not happen on bingo night . Where’s that cigarette.

Keep the freezer packed with ice (In gallon jugs or others) and closed, and even after the power is out, the food will stay frozen for quite some time. Something I'd like to contribute is pertaining to the new preppers. I'm also a new prepper & as I research and watch videos it looks easy which can be misleading. We need to keep in mind these are people who are already familiar with what they're doing. We're NOT so we need to practice using tools or techniques before a SHTF situation occurs. I'd like to also add if you're a parent of younger kids, DEF get them use to the idea of entertaining themselves without electricity. It's going to be even harder if they're not familiar with how to play on their own.

I fully disagree with your point on firearms and facing justice when the grid comes back up. Unless it's a local/minor occurance then yea I can see order being restored but if we're talking about a situation where the grid is down a long time and you have society breaking down at every level then I can assure you theyre not going to prosecute 100 million americans who broke laws during this period. So using lethal force is 110% an option and will be employed.

This is a good list for a beginner. Anyone else should have a bug-out location, even if it's just a hunting camp or Aunt's house. On that note: many older folks are quite receptive to the idea of bugging out. Their parents were likely children of the Great Depression and WWII. Keeping a shelf of food in the basement is an idea only one generation away, and as they've aged many recall that memory as one containing great wisdom. A Lowe's shed kit in Aunt X's back yard containing enough food for her buys you a BOL.

I'm all for getting ready for disaster, but when you get into the level of forming like minded groups, mags and units for fire cohesion etc., moving out of the city and such you start developing an attitude of us or them. People are no longer people..they are threats. If my family and I had our place over run and forced out by marauders and I happens to stumple across your path while getting away from danger, even though I am also a prepper, at that point I would be considered a danger to most and possibly shot. There is starting to be a clear division between us as Americans that will highlight the racial strains instead of unit them. If shit really did go down it would take all of us united to overcome that which threatens our freedom as we know it. I was watching a guy on TV Tha teaches people to get ready for shtf, and he teaches if people come to you or across your path then you take all of their stuff and dispatch them. Really!? First off, Isolated pockets of prepper groups will not hold out long without cohesion from others..I believe that is what was the true foundation of what a patriot is supposed to be.

I bought a place outside any community and prepared just in case. If the SHTF, anyone not in my inner circle will be deemed a threat and dispatched as such. If you are in a city and need to bug out skip the roads and prepare for riding the rails with a rail rider bike. You can travel faster with less energy on a rout that very few would follow as they would target roads to follow. With the right prep you can carry a good amount of supplies and still move fast without the sound of an engine to give yourself away. It is also good for traveling with kids as you can put more seats on to keep them with you. A rail rider you want to be able to quickly get it off the rails if you find yourself sharing with a train.

Disaster Preperation / Readiness 1. Establish Communication AM/FM Radio / Walkie Talkies / CB / HAM - what are family members supposed to do Rally where? Wait at rally point how long? How to leave messages? Use “IF” statements. - don’t get stuck with a bunch of unprepared people without a plan. Develop a written SOP checklist document 2. Asses the situation and make a plan 3. Get to home or bug out location. Make real-time decisions based on what is happening. Unprepared neighbors are a threat. 4. Secure your location. People are panicking and now looking for resources. People will get desperate. Neighbors will “demand” they be rescued. Will you help EVERYONE or stick to yourself. A society is only 3 meals away from Anarchy. Be prepared for irrational with weapons. Action is faster than reaction. Establish security rotations. Make defensible locations. Be prepared to leave unsafe location. 5. Observe OPSEC. Keep it a secret to keep it. Don’t tell someone unless you want EVERYONE to know. Keep your mouth shut 6. Blend in as much as possible. Don’t cook. Exercise oder control. Mimic others around you. Make them think you are in the same hardship location. Be a grey-man. Beware the fat-man in a starving land. 7. Gather as much intel as possible. AM/FM NOAA Radio, CB With Emergency AND NOAA Channels, HAM Radio. All battery operated. Expect to be without electricity. Get antennas. BE PROACTIVE. Be in a constant state of evaluating your circumstance. 8. Avoid venturing out into areas of crowds. Most stores carry supplies for up to 3 days. Be will revert to their basic instincts. Think twice about getting last minute supplies. Try hardware store or auto parts store. , not grocery stores, banks, pharmacy, If you do not have it now, do not leave your place of safety to risk your life. 9. Shelter in place for atleast 2 weeks with anticipation for 4 weeks. There will be marauders. The massive hoard of people hoping for someone to rescue them probably will have passed. 10. Decide the next steps. What do you do next. Intel and circumstances. Have the option to be mobile. Plan to be able to move. Complacency kills.

We still have a animal shelter near me at the racecourse for animals that had been found . Volunteers have been sleeping with the cats and dogs . They have one building for food . One building for clothes and blankets . People gave hay and food to be taken in helicopters . One shed just for horses. New Zealand has never seen a storm like this it’s heartbreaking . They haven’t even told us how many people have died and it’s been over two weeks.

My wife and I have typed up emergency plans in the event that I’m not home or away at work... For starters, list all emergency actions on an emergency plan and make sure all members of your family familiarize themselves with it... Have the emergency plan drawn out and placed in an easily accessible area with your preps... Part of our plan includes pre-cut plywood boards and sheets for each window on the first floor (each are labeled, pre-cut, and pre-drilled for each window), having 100 Hour Candles with matches and flashlights in EVERY room of the house, stockpiling nails, screws, hammers, and pre-charged power tools to board up all the windows, and having metal door braces with pre-cut boards for each door on the first floor... Couple with strong window film, all first floor openings will be hardened and secured... Next, aside from filling every container and bathtub with water, my wife has been instructed to purchase as many canned goods and supplies with our saved currency within the first 12 to 24 hours of an emergency... I feel that the first 12 to 24 hours of an emergency gives us a small window of opportunity to top off our already overflowing preps while the Zombie masses try to figure out what happened... After that initial time period, we will lock up and hunker down for at least 1 to 3 months while the Braindead Masses die off from starvation, infection, and crime...

I agree on the window of opportunity. But I have to warn you that the more populated your area is, the smaller the window. In a city you may have time for a day. People will be glued to their TV, radio and smartphone sucking in all the lies being propagated to keep them calm. But once they had a chance to sleep over it, they might already start panicing the next day and empty all the stores. I think in a rural environment you will have more time. For once, more people are already used to having many supplies at home and they will take it "more easy" for the first few days, even if they are unprepared. They will not see the chaos right ourside their window unlike in a city... so you can have a few more days to keep stocking up. If you can, you should not go directly to the stores near you as people might later remember you being there and loading up lots of supplies. You also have a distance cushion to all the evil people who will likely concentrate in the citis and slaughter each other before moving on to the surrounding areas. This gives you time to fortify and coordinate neighborhood watches with people you can trust.

MrFreddyynoa if you are instructing your wife to get supplies after SHTF, you are too late. Otherwise, good plans on securing the home.
