I created a resume survey for employers and recruiters asking them to rate various aspects of a resume as not important to very important. Over 300 employers completed the survey and the results were interesting. The Object Statement rated quite low mainly for reasons you said. A summary of skills and qualifications section at the top of the resume rated much higher, but only if that summary spoke specifically to what was being asked for in the job posting.

better than a skills section is a Professional Summary where you showcase your skills in context by saying what you did with them. Instead of saying "Leadership" you say how you managed a team of 25 people to complete a (blank) project.

Thanks again for one more awesome video, man! Hey, what about doing another one, but focusing on people with very long experiences? Like 15+ years, 20+ years or so, who find it hard to reduce their resumes.

"you should never have the word 'I' on your resume"? What? Whom are they hiring then? Can you elaborate? Who should I (the person who wrote this statement esume) refer to?

Use I in the cover letter. In the resume it’s more of a list of entries. Chronological events and skills under specific headings.

I still got calls from HR with a 5 page resume in IT

thanks for your advice. i have a question. my sister was a recruiter for one of the biggest companies in the world, and i asked her a while back about leaving hobbies out as i've heard this advice before. she said the hobbies are the most fun part of the resume. i've seen her spend all day going through resumes and evaluating stuff, it must get pretty boring. should you really just leave it out? or maybe keep it as a smaller part? also i've had colored resumes before and it's not been a problem. they do print it out black and white but they seem to be most focused on the experience to me

So do I fill out my year gaps in the resume or do I just explain what they are during interview as a fresh grad? They're mainly hobbies, trying to find out what I needed to do, self study before finally trying to apply for jobs and nothing too specific.
@scaramoucheysimp Жыл бұрын
have a projects section for your self study and hobbies. during interview absolutely explain you were self studying and doing hobbies as they relate to the job, and frame it as self improvement and career preparation

Your video is really useful. But I think the pieces of advice you mentioned are very much generic in nature. Frankly if someone in IT for 20 years, will never write Windows 95 as a technical skill now. It would be actually helpful if you could make a video about how to remove useless things from the CV of someone with 20-plus years of experience.

As a top recruiter for many years I disagree with a couple of points, specially for technical jobs, e.g. Engineers, Science Professionals, etc. IT IS very valuable to know if someone has worked with the public (McDonald's, Customer Service, etc), one can be the most technically knowledgeable person and not be able to communicate their ideas or deal with clients. Hobbies and Interests are also important, well rounded people are very important because most high level tasks will entail dealing with people at a social level, we do not need robots .
@DonGeorgevich Жыл бұрын
true, but if you're a seasoned veteran with 15 years experience. Leaving your McDonalds experience adds no value.

Don't include: Profile picture/personal info Generic interests (I especially roll my eyes whenever I see people list "travel" or "music" and take it as a sign they're just a boring and unimaginative person) Signs of cut/pasting of job duties with no sympathetic rewording Infographics/skills matrices I personally don't mind seeing the full career history because I like to see the path someone has taken and the story it tells, but older jobs need to be appropriately summarised.
