What is important to note tho is that Düsseldorf is the 7th largest city of Germany when it comes to population but only the 75th largest (!) when it comes to size. That’s why it feels so walkable and small at times. In my opinion the perfect mix!

Thank you for bringing some more KZbin expat attention to Düsseldorf. I can agree with all of your likes for this city, which - as you pointed out - is so much more (and very different) than its cliché. I also like that it is situated between the Lower Rhine flatlands and the hills of Bergisches Land. If you are missing the "Voralpen", you may want to take a ride on S9 from nearby Essen to Wuppertal. Some years ago I took this train together with a colleague from Bavaria and as the landscape got greener and more montaneous he said that the scenery reminded him of the "Voralpen". This area south of Hattingen is also called the Elfringhauser Schweiz. You might like hiking there. Btw. - living in Düsseldorf, it can take some longer trips, too, to visit "local" friends, as Düsseldorf is situated right in the middle of the Rhein-Ruhr metropolitan area. So it's not uncommon to have friends, jobs, or appointments in the cities of the Ruhrgebiet to the north or, say, in Cologne to the south (or Mönchengladbach, Krefeld, Wuppertal ect.). But having all these cities nearby is a big plus, too, of course.

I think Düsseldorf does not have so many touristic attractions as other cities in Germany. So the majority of tourists stay in the Altstadt (Bolkerstraße and Königsalle), cause that’s like the most interesting part for them 😅. So the further away you get from the altstadt the less tourists you will find 😊. Our favorite neighborhoods for dining and drinking are Pempelfort (Nordstraße), Flingern (Ackerstraße), and Unterbilk (Lorettostraße). Also when the weather is nice locals love to bbq and picnic in any green area 😛

Schumacher and Uerige, the two best known Düsseldorf breweries. When I lived in Düsseldorf (in Unterbilk) in the mid 90's it was a common occurence that a buddy and me went pub hopping almost each weekend. We always ended up in the bar "Kneipe", which means literally "Bar" for the Absacker, the last drink. It was also our style of music in there. We always joked that there was one club on the Bolkerstraße / Bolker street that changed its name and owner roughly once every six months or so, because it always was a) totally overpriced, b) massively understaffed, and c) completely unappealing. Due its low income the owner always turned up bankrupt after the six months. After that time another idiot decided it would be a great idea to throw good money after bad, buy or rent the club, refurbish it completely, reopen it, and go bankrupt again within another six months. We always dropped in at the beginning of our Kneipentour / bar tour, looked around, found the atmosphere to STILL be lacking any kind of attraction or appeal, turned around without drinking anything. It became something of a ritual for us.

To my observation, approximately every several weeks (or a couple of months) there's at least one suggestion attempt for them to speak in German. I personally don't feel so strong about that, since what they're doing has a whole different purpose, and it works.. not just well, it works magic. Now would I enjoy and appreciate and actually get to learn from such venture? Yes, I would. But on a realistic note And in my personal opinion if ever done in the future, it has to be a sequence, not an entire episode. Well after all, just to test it.. on us! 😅

After you called that a reason for liking Düsseldorf I wasn’t interested anymore to hear the rest. What I like in Düsseldorf is the Volksgarden, Kölner Straße, the Japanese stores and restorants, the immermannstr is also kinda cute, and my favorite place is just climbing over the Rhine promenade to sit down near the water, it’s actually a pretty view and you don’t near the noises of the people who likes sitting above only the real ones know which place I’m talking about

What do you define as suitable? Any area except the area around the central train station is totally fine.

Hey guys, thanks for all your work and the information! It's all really helpful! I just have a quick comment; I have lived in Germany for a while now, and experienced living in 5 cities in the South, North and West of the country. Düsseldorf is a beautiful city, I just cannot seem to feel comfortable or claim my place in the city's overall society. As a brown person, 9/10 Düsseldorfers in day to day life are so rude to me, and always treat me with disrespect. This does not seem to be the case for my white German friends. People here also seem to be very uptight and stuck-up, way more than the average in Germany. Such is never addressed by your videos though. Could it be solely my ethnicity / complexion? I do not know though if I would recommend anyone not white to move to such a closed-minded city.

I'm sorry to read that you've had such experiences here in Düsseldorf. Everyone's experience is different and it's also a process to find a place to feel comfortable and maybe one day call home. I (Jen) have been living in Düsseldorf since 2012 and have not felt this type of discrimination. On the contrary, I find the people in this city to be super friendly and my experience has been positive and I feel at home here. So I cannot talk about the opposite scenario, because I have not experienced it personally.

The Major of Düsseldorf is way too conservative.Düsseldorf needs more Skyscrapers with offices and Apartments.there are some Projects in work but some were put on hold. And they do it almost all time.telling the medias oh yes we are gonna built some extraordinary Skyscrapers here. But nothing really happens.I wonder why? In this time they built a whole new skyline in Frankfurt

@@inotoni6148 I live in Düsseldorf and don't believe these people. It is extremely unsafe for you to go, the Altstadt (old town) and nearby area is full of immigrants, bad youth and such. Any nice area in town, is automatically for very very rich people so be prepared to pay more just to feel safer. I wouldn't advise you to come here. Southern Germany is way safer and not as Zogged out as Northrine Westphalia. My unpopular opinion. Be prepared for the seething Düsseldorfers that will attack my comment. Don't come here.

I'm from Berlin and lived in Düsseldorf for 5 years. I had an amazing time job wise but I really didnt liked the city. I always was homesick with Berlin. For me the best City in the world. What I really didnt like about Düsseldorf was the always moist and smelly air due to the geographic location at the Niederrhein., the amount of car traffic and narrow and thight, close build of the streets. People were sometimes also too concernded with other peoples business. What is a bid disgusting is that many people/houses store their trash cans in the cellars. In the summer very smelly. What i liked very much was indeed the Paradiesstrand, the general friendlyness of the locals, the Unterbacher See.

Strange, I was in Dusseldorf few weeks ago, I have stayed there for 10 days, and I will definitely never go back. One of the ugliest, smelliest, dirtiest cities I have ever visited. And people are so unfriendly, finding place with gluten free options to eat is a huge challenge!
