Yeah, it took me quite some time to realize that they used a propeller sound in a shot where you can see the plane flying... but it has engines. Also the mirror scene was genius, it left me with a "Wait... there is something wrong" feeling until I got it.

I try and tell people that think this humor is dumb, it’s actually really intelligent humor. The writing is incredible. There’s 5 jokes going on in every scene. I’m not saying people are dumb if they don’t get the jokes, but I think the people that get it, are smart.

Yeah Stack always plays a serious moody type of character and the way he acts in the movie is just like himself of course not the fighting through the airport stuff but just personality wise. He always used to creep me out especially when he hosted Unsolved Mysteries and he eventually worked with the Zuckers much later on in his career in another hilarious sports comedy Baseketball in a scene where he does his own show explaining an Unsloved Mystery involving one of the lead characters.

I was a flight dispatcher for a US airline in 2002 and a flight captain called me telling me he needed a new copy of his flight plan/dispatch release. The F/A had noticed Mr Neilsen had boarded and asked him to poke his head into the cockpit and deliver his famous line "Good luck, we're all counting on you." He was very gracious and did so. Needless to say I was more than happy to send the captain a new copy, for Mr Neilsen had autographed the original copy :). There isn't a US airline pilot who doesn't have this entire movie memorized. The "what a pisser" line was filmed in the basement tunnel coming from the TWA terminal at LAX to the landside terminal, and the 747 poking thru the window scene was also a situation at the LAX TWA terminal as well - one of the gates the airplane nose was just a few feet from the terminal window. Capt Kramer kicked all the tail in the ticketing lobby in the TWA Terminal at LAX. One of the best movies ever.

Such an awesome movie. A few more points- Peter Graves, aka. Captain Oveur, said he "didn't get it" when he read the script. It was his agent that convinced him to take the role. Even then, Graves said while filming the movie he thought the whole thing was rather dumb. It wasn't until he saw the finished movie that he realized how funny it actually was. George Kennedy starred in all of the 'Airport' disaster movies of the 1970s, he can be seen at 11:57 of this video as the captain of the Concorde in 'Airport 79'. Kennedy wanted desperately to be a part of this movie but was not offered a part. The Zuckers and Abrams made it up to him by casting him in the 'Naked Gun' films. One last thing, I worked for Virgin America for many years and we had a large operation in Terminal 3 at LAX. The terminal scenes for this movie were filmed in Terminal 3 at LAX and 30 years after filming, it still looked much the same. Whenever I was passing through LAX, it was so much fun to remember the scenes from 'Airplane!' that were filmed there and recognizing all the spots. I can't count how many times I have walked down that hallway where Ted looks at the camera and says "what a pisser". Thanks for doing this movie!

This film broke new ground in comedy films. A fundamental rule in film making, never have more than one gag on screen at any time. This movie shatters the rule. There are points where the movie has three or more gags running in the background. They used serious actors in comedic roles. As pointed out Leslie Nielson, It is probably safe to say his career was in it's twilight before "Airplane!'. This role revitalized his career, sending it in a new direction. How he could perform his roles with out cracking up laughing, is amazing. Every actor was perfect in their roles. Barbara Billingsly speaking jive was hysterical. Robert Stack was excellent! The St Christopher statue was perfect. Lloyd Bridges also found a rejuvenated career in comedic acting. Last but not least Stephen Stucker, aka Johnny,he was extremely talented and funny. Taken from us too soon, RIP.

Interesting tidbit...as you correctly noted, Airplane was based on the film Zero Hour. Zero Hour was a remake of a Canadian TV movie called Flight into Danger. Flight into Danger was written by Arthur Hailey...who also co-wrote Zero Hour. Hailey also wrote a novel based on Flight into Danger called Runway zero eight Arthur Hailey also wrote the book Airport, which of course inspired the 1970 film of the same name and the 3 sequels.

That was one of the things that made it a success. They tried to cram just as many gags in as they could. Hardly ten seconds goes by without something happening. That's also why it will never be possible to replicate its success as a comedic film.
@PCLoadLetter3 ай бұрын
The movie was much longer. They cut out all the bits that weren't completely hilarious in the test screenings, ergo the entire movie was hilarious. The coffee boy and girl had a long discussion about their high flying jobs in DC and NY, all of which was cut, except for the cream bit. It's on KZbin.

Additional fun facts: Robert Stack, who was 60 years old during filming, did all his own stunts during the fist fight at the airport, which is insane. Also, Sir Christopher Lee later said that turning down the role of the doctor in this film was one of the dumbest mistakes of his whole career. I agree, TBH. In fact, I think it's a terrible shame that he and Nielsen never did a comedy together. That would've been legendary.

Yeah Robert Stack RIP gave a great performance in this movie and Caddyshack 2 and he used to creep me out especially when he hosted Unsolved Mysteries. @bryanrizzo9377 Жыл бұрын
More interesting fun facts about Airplane...George Kennedy turned down the offer to play Steve McCroskey before it eventually went to Lloyd Bridges. I can see Kennedy pulling it off but he eventually worked with the Zuckers and starred with Leslie Nielsen in all three Naked Gun films. After Nielsen worked with the Zuckers on Airplane and the first two Naked Gun films he was offered the role of Admiral Benson in Hotshots and said that he had already done enough spoof movies with the Abrahams and Zucker brothers...so Lloyd Bridges took that role instead.

I feel like the reason for the decline in spoof movies is because how hard comedy can be nowadays, people take themselves WAY to seriously now and hate it when some one cracks a joke or pokes fun at them or whatever they like or base their lives on, and it’s sad that people can’t take jokes anymore because it hurts their overly sensitive feelings. And because of that comedy in general has changed and will probably never go back to the glory that it was.

Another joke that you don't fully get if you're not from the 1970s. The woman who played the Jive translator had also played the mom on _Leave_ _It_ _To_ _Beaver._ She was the epitome of a white, suburban mom who'd probably never met a black person. While the scene would've been funny with anyone, it being her just made it so much funnier for those who recognized her.
