The trial flashback is definitely my favorite part: "I flew with Stryker during the war. I'll never forget the night we bombed Macho Grande. Stryker was the squadron leader. He brought us in real low, but he couldn't handle it." "Buddy couldn't handle it? Was Buddy one of your crew?" "Right. Buddy was the bombardier, but it was Stryker who couldn't handle it. And he went to pieces." "Andy went to pieces?" "No! Andy was the navigator, he was alright. Buddy went to pieces. It was awful how he came unglued." "Howie came unglued?" "Oh no, Howie was a rock! The best tail gunner in the outfit. Buddy came unglued." "And he bailed out?" "No, Andy hung tough! Buddy bailed out. How he survived, was a miracle." "Then how he survive?" "No, 'fraid not. We lost Howie the next day." "Over Macho Grande?" "No, I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande. Those wounds run... pretty deep."

My favorite memory of this movie is when one night on a family vacation in the Smokey mountains of Tennessee, we were in a cabin, and the cabin had DVD’s on a shelf that just came with the cabin. All the movies were trash none of us would ever watch with the exception of Airplane 2 which was oddly sitting on the shelf completely out of place. So we were all drunk and put on Airplane 2 and the scene where William Shatner appears to be talking on a video monitor but it turns out to be not a video monitor but just a window on a door and he is actually just standing right in front of them on the other side of a door, made us laugh so hard we cried.

I like Airplane 2. One of the greatest things about it was that William Shatner absolutely embraced his inherent wackiness. While it may not be as good as the first overall, there are some elements of the film that I like better. It's a case of the parts being better than the whole.
@NemeanLion-2 жыл бұрын
I think Shatner always had the potential to do comedy but for some reason it never caught on until later in his career. I mean he was hilarious in Loaded Weapon as General Mortars but also had no problem getting bit parts in Dodgeball and Miss Congeniality.

I rewatched Airplane II sometime last summer, and it's honestly every bit as funny as the first--the middle-eastern shuttle van pulling up in the beginning with the terrorists and hostages was insanely funny, Shatner is perfect, and Julie Hagerty is every bit as funny and charming as she was in the first. I think the downside is the last 20-30 mins of part II are kind of slower on the laughs so even if you laughed a lot in the beginning, by the end it feels like maybe it's dragging and that's the part of the experience most people remember best: your final mood/feelings/assessment at the end. Thanks for another loving tribute Minty! :)

No one in Hollywood really gives a shit what you do, just as long as your projects make money. Blazing Saddles wouldn't get made today, because there would be no need to. The idea of a black sheriff in a Western is not a radical one anymore. All of the cowboys and towns folks who do use racial slurs are portrayed as being really fucking stupid, while Bart and Jim are geniuses by comparison. Today, most of the US population has no hang ups about race anymore. A movie with a message like Blazing Saddles would fly completely under the radar because its no longer relevant.

It made a sort of spoof movie continuity with the naked gun movies, which were titled "is there a cop to save the queen ?" followed by "... the president ?" and "... Hollywood ?" "2001 : a space travesty" was also translated to "Is there a cop to save mankind ?" French strategy, you know... I kind of like it in the end, it connects all those fun movies from that era and people of my age have all seen them.

What's actually happening is that the passengers are playing the popular quiz "Jeopardy", and original host Art Fleming makes a cameo as himself. There's also another game show connection in here as well. The Buffalo news anchor is played by Pat Sajak who, at the time of the film's release, had only been hosting "Wheel of Fortune" for a few months. He continues to front that show with Vanna White to this very day.

Ken Finkelman, the director, is a genius. Thanks for the info that he directed Grease II. I've never seen it, but now I'll look for it. Finkelman is a Canadian. After spending some time in Hollywood he returned to Canada, and did several really funny television series up here. His trademark is a kind of pushing of the joke, in a deadpan way, farther and farther and farther. Some of the series were only half a dozen episodes. I think Foolish Heart was my favourite. Several times per episode he would have this really beautiful singer provide a kind of ironic greek chorus. Patricia O'Callaghan. Her genre was cabaret style songs, except, unlike just about every other cabaret singer, she was a soprano. It was remarkable.

That really want why films had their deleted scenes put back in for network TV. TV movie slots were exactly two hours. Most movies clocked in around an hour and a half or so, with ads/commercials filling the rest of the slot. If a movie was Rated R or had other objectionable content that had to be cut for TV, filler material was needed to keep the movie’s run time somewhat consistent. If it was about getting more ads in to make more money, time lost on the film due to the cut scenes would have just been replaced by more ads. Making a movie longer didn’t allow for more ad time, just the opposite.

I respect Airplane II. Most of the time to make a good sequel, you take what worked and ramp it up. That's what they tried. They botched the landing, but they didn't botch the dismount. It's still enjoyable, and makes a great double feature with the original. I dunno how Airplane got a PG rating. There is a segment where a woman runs in front of the camera bare chested.

It got a PG rating because the PG-13 rating didn't come around until 1984 and the release of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

My favorite moment in Airplane II is the Jeopardy reference. This came out less than two years before Alex Trebek became the host when the series was revived.

If you're a sci-fi fan, you'll pick up a lot more references throughout the movie. Somewhere on KZbin there's an entire video about the device with the red lights in a tube running horizontally, which no one knows what it does. It's been in almost every iteration of Star Trek and in several other TV shows and movies. Somewhere, there's a good _Airplane 3!_ script floating around. I'd love to see them hand off the series to a new cast, and have Hayes and Hagerty make cameos -- y'know, before they die...
