My take on the "Martha" scene is that Bruce realized that Clark actually posessed humanity -- loved ones, a family, selfless concern for others. And, that Bruce himself with all his twisted brutality was the one who had sank to subhuman. He sort of woke up to the fact that maybe they weren't so different.
@thebat4945
@thebat4945 Жыл бұрын
You get it. It was quite literally a wake up call for Bruce. The bat demon coming out of her grave and attacking Bruce was a foreshadowing of it. At that moment he saw himself as the monster

@@thebat4945 I think too that the coincidence of their mothers' names made Bruce think, "This alien menace has something so personal in common with *me* ?" I like how Bruce furthers this sentiment of understanding that Superman is "More human than I am." As Bruce tells Alfred in "Justice League."

@ezduzit4906 Жыл бұрын
I've been saying this for years. I got it as soon as I saw it and didn't understand how ignorant people were thinking them just sharing the same name was what it was about. Not only did it humanize Superman to Batman, the name itself was enough to make Batman pause and realize he has become the villain. That is why he throws the spear away in disgust with himself.

About the “Martha” scene, I think that when Superman said “Martha”, it reminded Bruce that that was the last word his father said before he died. Throughout the movie, Alfred kept warning Bruce about going too far in his fight against criminals and about how Superman isn’t their enemy. So hearing “Martha” from Superman, he now finds himself in the position of potentially becoming the kind of person that took his parents lives, and becoming the murderer that created Batman in the first place. That’s what stopped him. The music being played in this scene is also the same as the scene in which his parents died, so I think that’s the reasoning behind the scene.

Most of people didn't understand the Martha scene. Batman did not spare superman because their mothers share the name the real reason is batman has spent 18 years preparing to kill this alien who can destroy the earth it isn't until superman uses the name that the alien becomes humanize at first batman becomes more enraged because he thinks it's a trick once he realizes it's clarks moms name he starts to understand that maybe they're not so different he never considered the evil alien had a human mother or let alone would be willing to die for her Bruce couldn't save his mother no matter how many goons batman brands he was a helpless kid when she was killed just like Clark is now he'll never be able to bring his mother back now he has an opportunity for redemption. It literally has nothing to do with both their mothers having the same name that was just a spark that you can see snapping Bruce out his kill rage that showed him super man wasn't pure evil. With potentially his last breathe Clark asking his killer to save someone else there's no argument it's not confusing or terrible writing his just grasping at straws it's in the narrative it's the entire reason we were shown the deaths of the waynes one more time.

@@Lopez03Eduardo. It's the coincidence and awkwardness that makes us disappointed. Not that we didn't get it. Of course we get it. A couple of things. The Ultimate Edition wasn't a response to poor anything. The Ultimate Edition is the director's cut that was created first. WB decided it was too long and asked for 30 minutes to be removed. Removing 1/6 of any story rarely does something positive. It was even announced a full month before the theatrical cut was released. This is a significant part of why the movie was reviewed so badly. When Lex planned for Batman and Superman to fight he didn't know about Doomsday. Once he gains it as an option it becomes a contingency plan in case Batman fails. The fight between them also gives him the perfect opportunity to create Doomsday because both of them, especially Superman are too busy to know about it and stop it. This movie is the 2nd part of a 5 part movie arc. Saying it's wrong to use Doomsday like this and too soon to kill off Superman so soon would mean dragging it out to more than 5 movies, which wasn't the plan. No one is getting upset that Bale Batman retired as Batman after 3 movies. Sometimes you have to let the filmmaker do their thing. I think killing off Superman early, like Gandalf and Obi-Wan were drives the other characters to join together and create the group (or league). Why would anyone bother putting the team together if Superman was always there and more capable than all of them? The death of Superman perfect reason.
@vladyvhv9579
@vladyvhv9579 Жыл бұрын
Indeed. Sometimes, even small cuts to save a couple of minutes can leave fans confused. When the 2011 The Thing prequel came out on DVD and Bluray, it had a bonus feature of extended scenes in the credists part, which actually answered some questions that the less logically-inclined viewer had been complaining about. Like why there were grenades on the helicopter. Logically, Lars grabbed them and put them on there before takeoff, but some people needed to actually see this to happen to accept it as part of the timeline. Similarly, when movies and TV shows are cut for time for tv broadcast (they'll take out 15 or more minutes from an episode of the A-team, for example), sometimes parts that get cut aren't the boring filler material, so a viewing on those channels can become a bit more of a confusing mess, or otherwise less enjoyable due to them cutting out parts of the action scenes.

The Director's Cut is a 9.5/10 for me. Nearly all the risks they took to modernize and add complexity to these characters made them so interesting and distinguished from any other interpretation before them. This is the movie that made me appreciate Superman again after I lost interest for the character as an adult. Also, I never understood some who thought DC should have copied Marvel by having solo films for every hero before the big "team-up" movie. Movies naturally have multiple characters in them: main characters & supporting. We all understand that. It's simple. They all play their roles and develop as the plot demands. Before I watch Seven Samurai, I don't feel angry that I didn't get a solo film each of the title samurai, I just enjoy (or don't) the experience the film is trying to create.

I feel like there was too large of a jump of plot telling and we were expected to know parts of the characters that weren't actually explained to us. I always felt there was a missed opportunity in not connecting it with the Arrowverse as way to tell us what was going on between films and maybe even connect thru certain plot threads. At the very least there should have been a Batman film between BvS and Doomsday should not have been involved.

Superman And Lois try to get closer like BVS with twisted plot in every season and it worked because the plot unpredictable. John Henry Irons daughter shared same name Clark and Lois miscarriage daughter but Lois didn't tell John about that. John is a Steel base on Reign of the Supermen Comic who inspired from Superman. Morgan Edge is actually Superman's step brother and original character for those show name Tal-Rho. A family member who ally with Zod to ressurect the Krypton using Eradicator to counquer the Earth. Ally Allston who end up as Parasite trying to merge the Invest World and real world. Bizarro Superman from Bizarro World turned be Superdoom at the finale season 3. When Gal Gadot was announced as Wonder Woman there was a bit of fan hate as well. At the time I thought that the only way they could make Gadot work as Wonder Woman was to make her more like Xena the warrior princess (amazed no one brings up the similarity). They seemed to have done just that with the WW BvS costume design, but Gadot herself really rose beyond expectations and became an epic Wonder Wonder. I don't even think of Xena now especially since they've brightened Gadot's WW colours. I loved BvS (admittedly it's not perfect), with three iconic superheroes on screen for the first time at once, Gadot, Cavill and Affleck were outstanding. From what I could see at the time, a lot of online fanboys and so called movie critics were fanning the flames of hate for this movie for their own profit. Excellent work here as usual Minty 👍

@@m.d.s.69 Perhaps you should expand your horizon of reading material. Xena was conceived originally as a vicious female warlord who was on a quest to kill Hercules, Kevin Sorbo's character in "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys". She was such a popular character that she was spun off into her own series as a sort of bad girl gone good. Where exactly have you ever seen Xena's co-creators, Robert Tapert and John Schulian in their own words, credit Wonder Woman as any sort of inspiration for Xena?

My favorite Lex Luthor is Michael Rosenbaum in Smallville. But Jesse Eisenberg is great too, he is playing a confident Lex, but one who's maniacal like he was when he first appeared and Ain Superman: Birthright. I think many saw him and because he wasn't bald or buff it was jarring. We see his facade breaking down in the party scene and how creepy he'd get with the Senator. Each character had to start somewhere and unfortunately we never got the chance to see Lex evolve, like we did with Batman and Superman The Justice League cameos were a 2 minute scene, it wasn't a scene that stopped the flow of the film but one that just let fans know it's a bigger world out there. The Martha scene seems to be misunderstood quite a bit as it's not about the name Martha but about Batman's PTSD. The name was a trigger word, like Tony in Iron Man 3 would freak out at the thought of the events in The Avengers. Very real stuff that soldiers coming from war have to deal with and both films were unfairly criticized for it. I'm sure you're joking with the Martha jokes but you wouldn't believe how many really believe that's what stopped the fight, just the name. Doomsday was just a character meant to kill Superman, that's all the character was created for. Not sure if you read the whole Death and Return of Superman story but it wasn't like Superman and Doomsday fought across all those issues. In fact many of them had other stories where Doomsday would appear as a tease. The Doomsday here isn't even the same version as it's Zod, which was a plot line sort of used in Smallville. But it's Zods son in that show. It' was meant to showcase Lex's intelligence with having a back up plan if Batman failed to kill Superman. I felt great emotion for the death scene because of the story told. Before he sacrifices himself he smiles at Lois and says "This is my world, you're my world" harking back to the conversation he had with his father about how meeting Martha allowed him to finally forgive himself for a tragedy he caused and no longer have nightmares from it. Superman telling her that was him saying he's finally Happy, he knows who he is and is at peace with the world. This is shown further in Zack Snyder's Justice League when he helps the team with confidence and a smile. This death showed the world Superman loved them and we see how even someone wanting to kill him like Batman are now mourning. Having a 2 hour film where most of that is just Superman fighting Doomsday wouldn't have worked. A great film needs a great villain and Doomsday alone isn't that at all. It wasn't studio interference it's what Chris Terrio and Zack Snyder planned as part of a 5 film arc, just like a comic book often has 5 issues to tell one story. Lex's plan was to kill God, he hates God and Superman is the closest he has to God being real. By having Superman kill Batman, he proves that Superman isn't perfect. If Batman kills Superman, he got rid of God. In his mind Lex could control Doomsday, something we see was a misstep on his part. Lex explains this when talking with both Superman and Lois. It makes complete sense when you've paid attention. Doomsday was a Kryptonian weapon that was constantly killed over and over again so it could adapt to any form of killing possible. I do disagree with the mess comments, it's not incoherent at all. I understood it in theaters without the 30 minutes Snyder was forced to take out. There were really only 3 cooks, Zack Snyder and Chris Terrio for the most part and David Goyer early on. The delay of the film was due to reshoots, Gal Gadots training taking longer to complete and WB forcing Snyder to create a universe right away. So time was needed to get David Ayer's Suicide Squad developed and Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman (which Snyder had input on both). If you've seen Zack Snyder's Justice League I'm sure you notice how the characters have evolved from this film and that was always the plan. It just needed people to understand that and unfortunately they didn't. They complained about the studio rushing things but wanted an established goody good Superman on day one and that's not how it works. Many often cite Captain America as close to Superman and even he's flawed and shoots people and no one criticizes that. It's gotten to the point where Marvel can have buildings crashing and the heroes aren't blamed for it but DC needs to have the fights in a desert or else fans complain about people dying in buildings. Not really fair and WB have been dumb enough to listen to it

I took Jesse Isenberg's performance to be Mark Zuckerberg. He's a rich, spoiled, entitled brat in control of a huge segment of society (social media) who is ultimately emasculated by the presence of these manly gods and wants to take them down a peg or show them his superiority. It was a bold way to approach the character and not just imitate the previous iterations. We've already had the super-scientist, business tycoon, and so on. It's just like Joker. If you are going to do the character again, bring something new to it. Ledger's Joker was nothing like Nicholson's who was nothing like Romero's, but they were all great. I do agree that Doomsday was too soon, and for the same reason. The whole point of the death of Superman storyline was to see what it was like to lose such a beloved character. He was still not embraced yet. We needed a few more movies. They did need a common threat, though. The film could not have just been Batman beating Superman, then becoming friends over Martha. They needed to come together to defeat a common threat and realize how they were complementary. They just run into the Justice League problem with Superman being too overpowered. He's in JL for 5 minutes and defeats Steppenwolf immediately. And, finally. Thanks for pronouncing Gadot's name right. I know you don't get much recognition for corrections.

I liked the second half a whole lot more than the earlier half. I also feel the fight between Batman and Superman should lasted longer. And you know what? I love both the Whedon version of Justice League And the Snyder cut. To me, both versions have something to offer in their own way. I also really like Superman 3. It's no masterpiece and it has some flaws, but you know what, I can't help but smile after putting in the DVD. Long live home media. I do not subscribe to any streaming service. Ultimate Cut was not "in answer to the theatrical" ...it WAS the intended theatrical cut. WB promised Snyder they'd release that cut, but then reneged and forced further cuts, making it seem choppy and incoherent, confusing audiences. But they told him that he could release his cut on video. If Snyder's cut was the version shown in theaters, it would have hit a billion dollars. But, as with Suicide Squad and JL, the suits sabotaged the films and filmmakers.

I think the biggest problem this movie had was way too many subplots. There was no reason to bring Wonder Woman or this thing they called Doomsday (which it was not) into this film. In my opinion this is why the movie did not meet expectations. What they needed to do was follow the Frank Miller novel and make some minor changes since they planned on leading this up to the Justice League movie. What they needed to focus on was the tensions that lead up to Batman confronting Superman in a final showdown. Then after their initial confrontation they put their differences aside because of the discovery of the Para-demons on earth, which would have led to the Justice League movie. Like I stated too many subplots ruined what should have been a billion-dollar blockbuster. One last thing Minty, Jesse Eisenburg played, Alex Luthor in this film, not Lex Luthor. I noticed you called him Lex. Great Video. ONE LAST THOUGHT: If they wanted to bring Doomsday to the big screen, they should have done it like comics did. At the end of each superman comic there was an epilogue showing Doomsday's prison module and a pounding sound coming from it. They repeated that same epilogue for at least 5 or 6 comics until the one Superman issue where we see Doomsday's fist break through it finally, which means he had arrived. They could have done the same thing for 3 or 4 DC films before having him break through which would have built up the suspense and his eventual big movie confrontation with Superman. Had the studio done this, it would have been like Minty said, people would have felt the loss when Cavill's Superman is killed by Doomsday. The studio simply rushed this plot, given the fact Cavill had only played the role once. Had they done it correctly, it would have been a billion-dollar juggernaut.

I remember reading in the lead-up to this film being released that one of the original ideas for Lex Luthor was that he was an ex-skinhead gang leader who had risen from the streets to become a tech billionaire and they wanted to lean heavily into him being more punk with a lot of tattoos. Apparently, after seeing him in The Social Network the producers/ executives decided they thought Eisenberg would be perfect, but changed the character to be more socially awkward nerd than tattooed punk. As with a lot of ideas that seem to get passed around between Hollywood movies, I often think this idea was probably the main reason why when it came to Suicide Squad they decided to make Joker more of a tattooed punk gang leader.

It's absolutely a superhero "epic" (in the film sense of that word), and the size and scope of it does not mean that it was a mess, it just means that there is a lot to take in and PAY ATTENTION to (key words there), but the run time gives it more than enough space to fit it all in comfortably. Not once in the half dozen times that I've watched it did I think it was confusing or a mess.

That “debate” that is the crux of the BvS story. You’re supposed to understand both sides point of view or even feel like maybe it’s Batman that is “wrong” where to slowly realize what he’s talking about. The opposite happened in this film … you went in there knowing already that Superman is basically awful.

Not me, I thought it was a slog with few good scenes in the movie, it already had a terrible foundation with Man of Steel but then mashed together all of the Justice League nonsense barely giving Batman (who should have had his debut be a Solo Movie) any time to shine aside from one or two scenes that tell us nothing about this variation of the character. Ironically, they did the same mistake with MCU Spider-Man but at least they gave him his own Solo Movie not too long after smh
