It wasn't about "what would you do if stranded on a deserted island". It was about "how would you handle a life-changing situation over which you have very little, if any, control". THAT is what almost anyone can relate to. Death of a loved one, divorce, job loss, etc. That's what makes this movie so emotionally powerful and, in the end, somewhat gratifying. Hanks' character goes through the emotional stages of grieving: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Only after he goes through those stages does he choose to end the ordeal on his own terms--come what may, he's going to leave the island and try to get home. It's one of the seven (actually, nine if you follow Christopher Booker) great plots, or combinations thereof.

At the start of the movie, Chuck was an emotionally distant person unable to connect emotionally with anyone aside from his wife. It was only his friendship with Wilson and the subsequent loss of Wilson that taught him that emotional connections are vital because the ones we love will not be there forever. We see his new insight when on the way home, he apologizes to his friend for not being there to support him when his friend's wife died.

For me, the most emotional and powerful moment of the film was when Kelly suddenly realized the depth of her love for Chuck , and the incredible miracle of his return and came running out in the rain, crying, arms outstretched, and embraced him, kissing him. Do you realize that Kelly was making plans to break up with Chuck since she was having an affair with his dentist? This is the reason why she was never around when he called. (You can actually hear her moaning while having sex with the dentist while the phone is ringing) Why do you think she so quickly married the dentist after learning of Chuck's plane crash? She later regretted marrying him because he prevented her from getting a doctorate degree. (he wanted her to be a home maker and mother instead) She expressed a huge sigh of relief when Chuck asked her about the Tennessee Titans football team instead of her affair with the dentist. Chuck had calculated the timeline of her affair as he was only gone for 50 months and she had been married for well over 3 years and had a child. Kelly was a cheater and she was going to CAST Chuck AWAY once he returned from his business trip. Watch the movie again and you will see all the telltale signs that Kelly was going to dump him for the dentist. It's as clear as day...

Another thing I remember seeing about the making of this film, is when they finish filming and started editing the film they discovered all the audio wasn't usable. The wind and ocean waves masked out the other sounds they needed, so they had to recreated the sound effects in the studio to be doubted into the movie. There is a video of this, they were really creative with trying to replicate certain sounds.

I think a lot of people miss the terrific play on words of this movie's title. In your video's title, you refer to the movie as "CastAway" when in fact the title is "Cast Away". A castaway is someone who's been shipwrecked (or plane wrecked) and stranded (remember Gilligan's Island?). In this flick, the whole time he's on the Island, Chuck is clinging to the love of his life Kelly Fears. He finally gets home only to find he has been Cast Away by her. Entertaining vid as always, keep 'em coming!

Chuck was unsure partly because there was a realization that Kelly had probably been having an affair evidenced by her reluctance to marry Chuck, a situation mirrored by Bettina’s husband (from the movie’s opening FedEx delivery to her cheating husband in Russia), this being an unspoken character thread that carried throughout the entire movie until where Chuck meets her at the end when returning her undelivered package with her signature gold wings. Also we were witness to the beginning where her husband’s name was over the property’s driveway with Bettina’s and at the end where it had been removed…etc, etc. There was the unspoken undertone that Chuck was already being Cast Away (just like Bettina) even before he was stranded on that island. When you watch the movie with this idea in the back of your mind, the situation seems obvious but that dynamic didn’t make it to the surface until later viewings.

He didn't know how to pick up his life when he returned to it only to find all his hopes and dreams were gone. In essence he was left alone on another island. He finished delivering the package but now that was complete he didn't have a survival goal for the first time in years. The girl at the end spells it all out for him in what she says but he doesn't get it right away. She drives away and again he is lost but then realizes she was the one whos package he had all that time because she has the same painted wings on the back of her pickup truck as was on the package. It all becomes clear, the wings gave him purpose and the will to live once before and now they are showing him the way again. Maybe it's to her or just about never giving up. Whatever he does after that is irrelevant. It stops there at another crossroads because that's where you, the viewer, are left to think about your life and get the meaning of the movie. It's reminding us to about thinking about where you have been, where you are now and where you are going. To hold on to what's important and knowing when to let go. It's a movie about survival in more ways than one.

@@triggerray3443 Wow, that was very insightful and well written. When you put it like that I think after life changing events people should sit down and sometimes do, and evaluate where to go from here. That is because the person they were prior to the life changing even is no longer with them they have become someone else. As you said it is up to them which direction they take their life, the important thing is that they are alive.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale that's so insane; it started at a Fed-Ex port, aboard a Fed-Ex plane... yeah, a lil' O.G. "castaway" show reference.

Castaway is a metaphor. It wasn't about the character being stranded on the island but being a castaway in those lives he was a part of. Great movie, great story, great dedication by Hanks as he always puts forth a fabulous performance.

As a Tennessee Titans ticket holder since the beginning, I still really appreciate that Castaway may be the only film that mentions the Houston Oilers move to Tennessee and how close the Titans came to winning a Super Bowl.

Thankfully & hopefully that is changeing as now there are some programs out there to help those just getting out of prison get real job training & a start to be able to change & turn around their lives. Makes BIG SENCE as if a person isn't given a chance at a way to earn a living then they're forced to turn to crime again.

I assume the content for this channel mostly comes from Wikipedia, and sure enough- the Wikipedia article also oddly fails to mention Robinson Crusoe anywhere. I wonder if Minty legitimately thinks this movie idea was some kind of new concept and is unaware that it's one of many derivatives of a 300 year old classic novel.
@yesyesyesyes16004 жыл бұрын
@@SongOfStorms411 *using Minty's voice* Number 1 - the movie was based on a classic novel. Hard to believe but there is a book you might never have heared of - Robinson Crusoe. Wilson never told me that he was based on a character named Friday ...

I moved to Istanbul in 2004 and immediately made a series of dumb expat mistakes that cost me all my money. A friend helped me get an apartment, and I was able to get a job. But I was at bare survival level for months, and boy, did I think a LOT about this movie. Making do with so little gave me a humbling appreciation for every single small comfort, which ha never left me. Now I know why this movie stayed with me- because the writer tried to do the same. Thanks for this look at it again

I watched a interview and Tom Hanks was asked about why you use Fed Ex ?he said "it was much cheaper to use a known brand and that Fed-Ex was more then happy to not only provide their planes and what have you but also technical advice ..that had we where to go through a made up brand would have push our film budget...in short ...it was to save money.

Not true. The satellite phone was an inside joke and not in the script. The package was written to have two jars of salsa verde and a note begging her husband to come back to her.
