Dumb humour is very difficult to get right and D&D nailed it. There isn't a single groan (in a bad way) or moment where the joke didn't work. Given the shear number of dumb jokes/scenes, that's an incredible feat. I think huge credit has to go to Jim and Jeff for this.
@nsasupporter7557
@nsasupporter7557 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Though there were a few things that didn’t match up, for example... Lloyd couldn’t read, yet he was able to read “Sampsonite” on the briefcase. And when he was poring the turbo lax in Harry’s cup, you would’ve thought that Lloyd would’ve pored it in his own cup or drank Harry’s cup instead. What I’m getting at is Lloyd didn’t seem too “dumb” in that scene like he should’ve been. But the movie was still good enough to where we can look past that and enjoy it for the classic that it is. They really did get it right as you said, most “dumb comedies” are crap. Jim and Jeff are talented enough to where they nailed it. The second one in 2014 was a big mistake, however !

Much was saved with the editing making the lead characters more likelble. There are several filmed unused takes that would have made them much more egoistically sinister rather than just naively stupid, especially Jim's character.

The 90's was a phenomenal time for Jim Carrey. In Living Color, both Ace Ventura movies, The Mask, Dumb And Dumber, The Cable Guy, and Liar Liar were all huge and made Jim Carrey a huge star. It was a really great time for me because I was a young teenager when Ace Ventura Pet Detective , The Mask , and Dumb And Dumber came out. I was already a Jim Carrey fan before he made it big because of his first movie Once Bitten that came out almost ten years before back in 1985 which to me was a MASTERPIECE.

This may just be local trivia but the scene where Lloyd and Harry ride into "Aspen," Colorado is actually not the town of Aspen but the town or "Kingdom" of Breckenridge, Colorado. I lived in a small town called Dillon, Colorado, about 9 miles from Breckenridge while they were filming Dumb and Dumber and got to watch them film that scene. The parents of a few friends of mine were extras. All the other scenes where they're walking through "Aspen" are also in Breckenridge. I believe they did 5 takes on the bike. Breckenridge is known as a "Kingdom" because it was accidentally left off the map until the mid 1800's after gold was discovered there in 1859. Locals still refer to it as the Kingdom of Breckenridge.

They talk about this movie on the tour and there is a story that Jim Carrey insisted on staying in Room 217 (the notorious haunted room that was changed in the original The Shining movie). However, a few hours later Carrey stormed out of the room freaking out and said he was staying in a hotel in town and was never going back in that room. What I love about Jim Carrey in this film is, despite his shtick of making funny faces, his expressions of sheer horror when nearly crashing head on into the truck (and turning around afterward) and also when Sea Bass kicks in the door are the 2 Jim moments that make me laugh the most lol.

Nice one, Minty. I'm not surprised so many people turned the movie down. It could have been a career killer if things had gone wrong. You've got to respect Jeff Daniels for going for it like he did. That guy is an underrated actor if you ask me.

The first time I saw this movie, it had been out for a year, and that was on a flight from LA to NY. The plane was a 747, and I was on the upper level. There are at least 3 different times in the movie that I remember Jeff Daniels getting a lot of laughs. The first one was when they realized they were going the wrong way, when Jim Carrey said, "So we backtracked a tad." To which JD screamed, "A TAD?!" Everyone on the plane broke out in laughter to that one. The second one when JD was on the ski lift, and got his tongue frozen, when he asked some young kids if they had any warm water, and the grand daddy of them all was the bathroom scene, from the upper level of the plane I could hear the people on the lower level shouting with laughter. It was a booked flight, and there were over 500 people on it.

No you have it backwards, my friend. These days all you have to have is raw talent. Back then you actually had to have real talent, that’s why movies were so good in the 90s. Because the actors were so good. These days, we rely on CGI and all that crap. Also, Jim Carrey doesn’t have raw talent, he has amazing talent. No one else has talent like he does... or did

We did the Stanley Hotel tour last year in Estes Park. Apparently, something did happen. Carrey was as staying in the hotel, but left in quite the rush early in production. He refused to stay in the hotel after that and spent little time inside during the shooting of the film. He never would speak of it, just demanded to stay at a different hotel. At least, that is the story on the hotel tour.

The most important thing to recognize in this movie, and why the comedy is done right, is that there is a totally serious line of dialogue, delivered in straight, dramatic, heartfelt style by Jim Carey: Early in the movie the character Lloyd says, "You know what I'm sick and tired of? I'm sick and tired of having to eke my way through life. I sick and tired of being nobody. I'm sick and tired of having no one." This is the theme of the movie, and all the sick, sad, silly, and stupid comedy serves as a foil to this very serious philosophical dilemma. So they go have an adventure. Sure, they're still dumber than a box of rocks and are going to lose every time, but they had an adventure. They're no longer just eking their way through life.

And then transitioning to a successful movie career with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. It's kind of interesting on who played Sea Bass, considering it's someone who you don't normally associate with acting. He's played by now-retired professional ice hockey player Cam Neely, who played for the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks between 1983 and 1986, and the Boston Bruins between 1986 and 1996. He would reprise his role in the 2014 sequel, and also made a cameo in "Me, Myself & Irene" in 2000.

However, after about an hour of checking into his room, Jim Carrey actually ran out with his luggage and called for a cab, where he would stay in another motel until the end of shooting.
