Love this movie. Just a note, the Event Horizon was not designed/built to explore other dimensions. It was just meant to travel FTL by folding space. The traveling to other dimension was basically an accident. -

I like how there was such a simple explanation how a space warp works in this movie. It's basically the same concept as the so-called "faster than light" warp speed in Star Trek and hyperspace in Star Wars. Nothing like a little cool astrophysics before the horror starts!

My take isn't that the ship went to hell or any place that's literally malevolent. I think they went to a place where reality simply isn't the same, where they actual laws of physics are toxic to what we consider normal life and even the ordered nature of existence. There's no deacons on the other side, just a world that exists in its own natural state. The issue arose when this ship and crew from one universe entered a universe that wasn't compatible with them, the new universe corrupted the ship and crew causing all of them to break down in terms of what's expected on our side. We see this indicated by the new crews hallucinations, these are not agents from another dimension, they are manifestations of the people as the corruption slowly alters how their very minds work. And our crew is only exposed to this effect second hand, it looks like the original crew suffered more extreme effects almost instantly upon arriving in a universe where entropy logic cause and effect or any number of other constants we are accustomed to simply don't work the same. I dont think there's much of a story there for the original crew.

This is the only horror movie that actually scared the sh*T out of me. I watched it late at night - all by myself - the night before my parents were about to go away on a trip for a week. What a bad idea that was. I was alone in a big house for the first time since my grandma had passed and for some reason this movie did something to me that no other movie ever really did. It completely unnerved me. I was so freaked out and I didn’t know why. Every night I would come home from work to an empty house and, before I could go to bed, I had to walk room to room with a knife in my hand to check every closet and every corner to make sure I was completely alone in the house. I even checked the now empty apartment over the garage where my grandma used to live. The idea that a whole part of the house was just empty like that really freaked me out. I was always super freaked out going up there. There are several reasons why this movie freaked me out: the setting (people being in places where something really horrible once happened without knowing about that awful thing - really freaks me out), the religious symbolism (raised catholic), the gore, the strange lighting, and there was something about the people in hell having their eyes torn out that really freaked me out. I was so scared of this movie for so long. It gave me such a terrible feeling. I’ve watched it several times since - both with other people and alone - and I love it now. But that initial feeling that I got from this movie was really rough. I had nightmares. No movie has ever had a similar effect on me and I watch a lot of horror.

I once watched The Black Hole and Event Horizon back to back. They tell such similar stories, yet are wildly different movies! I got to see Event Horizon in the theater, and while it gets weak toward the end when Sam Neil goes full-on slasher, the film as a whole is solid and memorable. I particularly loved Laurence Fishburne's character. He's extremely competent, courageous, devoted to his crew, makes all the right decisions, and ends up more screwed than any character I've ever seen in any movie. Also, his instructions to the crewman who's about to get blown into space without a pressure suit are spot on, and the scene is the most accurate depiction of what decompression does to a human body I've ever seen in cinema. Finally, I play Elite Dangerous, an amazing space MMO. I built a rescue ship in the game and named her Lewis and Clark, and regularly come across fleet carriers (giant ships owned by players) named Event Horizon. I avoid them.

One of my personal "Holy Crap!" moments in revisiting films from my childhood was the realization that The Black Hole isn't really the scifi movie I always thought it was. But rather a horror movie set in space. All the tropes are there. The score is moody and ominous. The set design either dark and foreboding or hellish and chaotic. The Cygnus is a forgotten Gothic castle or cathedral. Rheinhart is the mad scientist pushing the boundaries of human knowledge to places it has never been, having the monomaniacal drive of Dr. Frankenstein and the hypnotic, theatrical baring of Count Dracula. Maximillian is his brooding monster who looks like the unholy mechanical combination of a gorilla and a spider (and might be the one actually in charge.) The crew are zombies. The sentry robots are animated skeletons. Old B.O.B is that hunchback living in the basement who tries to warn those pesky kids to get back in their van and get out of there before something bad happens to them. The effects are a little wobbly in places but do an excellent job communicating the scale and impact of the various set pieces. And while it isn't without its share of action scenes, laser gun fights, and cute robots, the film never loses its sinister and by the end desperate undertones as the crew of the Palomino tries to escape being dragged to figurative Hell by Rheinhart's insane obsession. Definitely worth a watch. Especially if you enjoyed Event Horizon.

It wasn't until I was in my early 20s I finally got it on DVD and watched it. I think it's easily one of the best horror sci-fi films ever. And even though not mentioned, it took some inspiration from HP Lovecraft with its cosmic horror and people being driven to insanity by forces that are never seen, but felt all around. I watched this film not long after it was released, I was about 14 years old and it has stuck with me ever since. Yes, it has it's shortcomings and would have loved to see the original cut, but the idea was there and it was just so original. Then we had Sphere a year later which tried to do a similar thing and failed. I am going to watch this again now with the knowledge of film study I have obtained over the years and see if it still feels the same as it did back then. Also, I picked up at the time that what happened to original crew of the ship is theoretically what could happen if we were able to create a wormhole in space. Up becomes down, inside becomes outside, basically Hell and just add a supernatural element to it. Will always be one of my favourite horror films.

Its found that the ship crossed into another dimension during the space fold and bought something back with it making the ship alive somehow

What's really interesting is that movie's story fits so well into the Warhammer 40K lore of the Warp. It's my head cannon that the movie happens tens of thousands of years before current Warhammer 40K timeline, as it's basically the very first attempt at traveling through the Warp, and not having a Navigator to do it is basically instant fail, horrible, horrible, fail. The ship entered the Warp without a Navigator who can see the...things in the Warp and steer the ship clear of them, the crew got possessed by the Warp entities, and then it came out of the Warp.

It is a true space horror masterpiece, one that perhaps was a little too complicated to understand for a lot of folks & dumb critics, especially when it came to the subject of accidentally traveling through other dimensions by means of its original intended design and mission (as already mentioned FTL) of folding time and space with its own black-hole generator. Overall it’s one of my favorite all-time horror movies.

I remember watching it when it came out. I liked it a lot, and I'm surprised it took as long as it did to catch on. Just too bad that a good chunk of the movie is missing like that. It's still far better than most garbage coming out now. And as for "critics" they're worse than ever now. I don't know why they even have them either for movies or games or whatever they're all so out of touch... i go by user reviews. If "critics" like it, normal people hate it, and if normal people like something then those morons always just complain and give it bad scores. It's actually worst with "game journalists".... ughh. Anderson's a sort of underrated director. Sometimes he doesn't go hard enough and sometimes the writing ain't the best, but visually his stuff is always great. He's also done a good job with projects others would fall flat on. Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, and Aliens vs Predator all had decent first movies, but the sequels without him at the helm were all terrible. Oh and Death Race was fun. The black hole event horizon description was almost correct. It's a region surrounding the singularity whereby the gravitational forces are so strong, not even light can escape. Wait... I have never heard about an "Event Horizon" television series. This has me worried. Event Horizon is in my top 5 all time favorite horror films. I truly hope they don't ruin it... and I wish they would spend the money for the show on a concentrated effort to unearth the deleted material, and finally give us "The Anderson Cut", instead.

This movie was just way ahead of it's time. It could not be appreciated at it's fullest like other movies of the kind dealing with cosmic horror like from beyond or The thing. Lot's of examples of this type of movies from before 2000s that have attained cult status decades later but didn't sell well at the box office.

I remember seeing this when it came out 2 weeks before my 13th birthday. I was a big fan of horror films at the time. So the combination of space sci-fi with horror made this an instant hit with me. I remember praising the horror element of it. Stating that for a Sci-fi movie it was "scarier" then most of the horror films of the time. Well at least to me. _"I created the Event Horizon to reach the stars, but she's gone much, much farther than that. She tore a hole in our universe, a gateway to another dimension. A dimension of pure chaos. Pure... evil. When she crossed over, she was just a ship. But when she came back... she was alive!"_ - Dr. William Weir

Too bad about the missing and damaged deleted scenes, I'd really like to see this the way it was intended. I really don't like super graphic blood baths, but the Hell scenes are the bottom line to the story. I like using my imagination for many things, but this is one movie I'd really like to know the ultimate fate of both crews in very visual ways. You know what I mean.

It is definitely one of the best cosmic horror movies. I'd absolutely love to see the cut scenes because considering what was kept in the movie they would have to awesomely horrific. Hopefully someday they will be found in some vault, or buried out in desert some place, or in some millionaires personal film collection and we will get to see the movie the way it was intended

I just LOVE this movie. I'm French and saw it in London during a trip. Later on, as it was going to be (unceremoniously) release in France, the movie livers association I was in, in my University, made previews of the film. So I made sure all my friends could come. They ALL still remember the preview and live the film. You forgot to mention that Soldier is an unofficial sequel to Blade Runner. About the lost scenes it was probably some Paramount executives who chose to "lost" them to be sure they wouldn't be blamed later on if a director's cut proved to be better and, therefore, that they were wrong to cut it down. The same kind who told that the Snyder Cut never existed, or told the director of the 1998 adaptation of the English series Avengers, when he asked for the cut footage to edit the director's cut he was promised by WB for its home release "everything that was shot is on the screen"... To the freaking DIRECTOR who KNEW what he was forced to cut... despite half of the trailers being scenes not in the film ! 🙄😤

Got a funny story about this movie. I saw a clip of it when I was a kid, the one where Sam digs his own eyes out, then after running away terrified, I looked again to see JDs character get eviscerated. That memory stuck in my head for YEARS, and it wasn't until I got into Warhammer 40K, that I read a Reddit post about how they thought this movie, was a nod to humanities first encounter with the warp! Lol After finding the title, I immediately bought a copy off Amazon! I love it to this day. Oh, and that hallway scene made me scared of red lights for a good few years. Lol

good review, side note: in "the haunting" the person 'haunting' the house is actually eleanor herself. she is actually controlling what is happening because it is indicated early in the movie she caused poltergeist activity as a girl. this is why markway's wife gets lost in the house near the end, because eleanor is jealous of her.

What I liked about this movie was it reminded me of Hellraiser!! Lots of cross reference, very cool sets and story. What 80% of people do not get or understand is this : No matter how scary, bloody, violent or painful any movie like this appears to be. Nothing is more scarier than your own nightmares of reality !!! What might scare me, might make you laugh and so on. My aunt use to work at the Cook county Morgue in Chicago. Nothing on the big screen made her jump or upset her in any way. What she seen at work on a daily basis was 10x more frightening than anything on the movie screen or TV. Her reality was much more scarier since she was now conditioned to horror. I cannot imagine what they all seen at work in the big cities that would make their reality scarier than the Walt Disneys amusing horror movie like Event Horizon or the Exorcist !! Alfred Hitchcock was the same way. He would let the audience decide the ending. This way everyone would go home scared in their own imagination. Like a custom fit suit, only now it is a custom made mental suit lol

I saw it on the theater and I was genuinely impressed by this movie. It’s a very competent horror, a really good sci-fi, fx were good and the cast was great, particularly Lawrence Fishburne, he really delivered. I enjoy horror although it’s not what I like the most, but this was one of the few movies that really creeped me out. Regardless of genre, this movie was really well made. Indeed, this movie made me think about it for a long time. Funny, I liked the final battle in Jason X because Peter Mensah reminded me of Lawrence Fishburne from this movie…
