I'm a long time original Godzilla fan. I've seen every Godzilla movie ever made including some Gamera, Rodan, Mothra and Japanese King Kong. I love Godzilla 1998. It brought Godzilla back down to earth. Something that was lacking since the original. It wasn't over the top cheesy and silly like the dancing Godzilla, or the kid dreaming about being on monster Island and playing with Godzilla's son and learning lessons of how to stand up to bullies. I could see where they were going with the planned trilogy. Each new offspring of Godzilla will be closer and closer to the Godzilla monster of the Japanese films. The biggest problem with Godzilla by the time it reached 1994 is that he got too powerful. This is a trend that Toho kept going up until Godzilla Final Wars. It was getting less and less likely that Godzilla had any threat against him. Godzilla 1998 made him vulnerable again. While at the same time being a serious threat. All the actors had their A game on in this movie. None of them, or the movie, deserved any raspberry awards.
@Huettnera6 ай бұрын
This "built up" thing about the planned trilogy is exactly what they did with the current "Monsterverse"-Run! They kept it relatively "down to earth" with the first movie and to a lesser degree with "Skull Island", built up on that with "King of the monsters" and went up from there until they went totally bonkers with the latest "Godzilla X Kong - The new empire".

Thank you, the description at the end sums this up to a tee. I saw this when I was 8 and loved it. It still appeals to the 8 year old boy in me, and when Corridor Crew featured the film in their VFX artists react series, they mentioned how much time was taken both in practical effects and CGI. The score by David Arnold is brilliant, and the cinematography is top notch as well, with the use of real atomic bomb footage far more impactful than any CGI nuke ever seen. My family enjoyed it on VHS, a friend found it enjoyable at a sleepover, I've met fans of it since and when I watched it with my wife she had no complaints. I can understand why fans of the series would hate it, but I can overlook the sometimes painfully bad acting and soak up the spectacle. I even saw a disaster movie countdown on TV where this version made it into the Top 40 (35th place I think).

Nakajima stated "its face looks like an iguana and its body and limbs look like a frog". Satsuma walked out of a screening of the film at fan convention G-Con '98 in Chicago, stating, "it's not Godzilla, it doesn't have his spirit". One of my favorite Godzilla movies as it would be the most accurate representation of an iguana that was affected by radiation, basically what Godzilla is.

Small correction, Godzilla had never been an Iguana or even a reptile at all prior to this film. He was always either a dinosaur or a semi-aquatic creature that evolved from dinosaurs.

this is literally the ONLY time he's an iguana

I want to see this movie back in 1998 when I was 16 years old and I thought it was only going to the best movie in 1998 finding out ( spoiler alert) that Godzilla is not a dinosaur but a mutant iguana. And also he does not have his atomic breath in this one or as tough.

This was very memorable in my life. My sister's and I grew up on the old movies and when this one came out, I was able to enjoy it with my kids. It had a lot of cool scenes and was very enjoyable. Mc Donald had some neat happy meal toys as well. I will always love this movie. It was a good time in my life.

The reason why it flopped was because it was only released in certain cinemas as a deal was made between the movie producers and the cinema chain. When they realised that this failed it went on public release.

I think you are confusing the story! It had the widest release of a film at the time and it was booked on the best screens of each theater for the first 4 weeks of release. The movie bombs and then they were stuck with empty or near empty screenings for the 4 or so weeks.

I was about 11 when I went to see this movie. Kids today don’t understand how summer blockbusters worked back in the day when the media was so narrow and controlled. It was actually really damn cool. The advertising for this movie made it seem like the biggest thing ever - things like Taco Bell commercials, Wallflower music videos, MTV specials, the works - it was a lot of fun especially at my age. I’ll always LOVE Godzilla ‘98 as a result.

As someone that has watched some of the original Godzilla movies, (I even owned a couple), I liked this this movie. I actually liked the design of this Godzilla more than the original. I do have to admit I would have liked to see more (a more appropriate atomic breath) but I can kinda see what they were going for also. Still overall I enjoyed this movie. I do have to think that if they were to go with another name for the film it might have ended up with a lawsuite for something in the vein of likeness rights or something like that. As far as the young zilla offspring: as someone who watched a lot of nature shows growing up, I anticipated that ending with the surviving egg as it's how that sort of thing works. Ensuring survival of the species and if I had to give one more critique of the film I feel like Dr Nik Tatopoulos would have had that thought too. Of course maybe that's why he found the egg in the animated show. I didn't even know about that show so guess that could be part of it. Personally the fact that this creature is born pregnant makes them a more serious threat than I feel is realized. Especially with how large it gets. I would like to see a sequal for this if done proper like to remember the events of this film, and giving it a proper breath weapon and making it a bit more agressive. I don't think it would be outside the realm of possibility to give it inherited memories or something so that it could know/remember how it's siblings and mother was destroyed and going for revenge. It's been a while but I could have sworn there were three eggs that survived but I'll have to just re-watch it. But having more than one might be interesting especially if they were the antagonist. But ah well. I still enjoy what we got from 1998.

Nice video. I also remember having a good time while watching this film. Maybe not as good as the original source material, but entertaining nonetheless. Hey Minty...are you aware of the other Japanese giant that actually had a TV series made in Australia, also in the 90's? It's called, "Ultraman Towards the future."
