I get why people don’t like the characters and the silly ‘Zilla babies at the end, but god… the Godzilla creature design was spot on, looking like what would REALISTICALLY happen if one of those iguanas or monitor lizards got mutated… way better than the pot bellied and hokey “guy in a suit” design. I grew up on the old movies, and still love them, but the 98 creature design is superior, sorry not sorry.

basically every person i've heard complain about this movie was really stuck on the looks of "zilla" more then anything else.. if it had actually looked like the godzilla we all know and love, i wonder how much better it would have been remembered. also, the taco bell ads were great, with the little talking Chihuahua mascot taco bell had at the time (i miss that dog) saying "Here lizard lizard lizard" while trying to catch godzilla, and in the end "i think i need a bigger box"

I'm a long time original Godzilla fan. I've seen every Godzilla movie ever made including some Gamera, Rodan, Mothra and Japanese King Kong. I love Godzilla 1998. It brought Godzilla back down to earth. Something that was lacking since the original. It wasn't over the top cheesy and silly like the dancing Godzilla, or the kid dreaming about being on monster Island and playing with Godzilla's son and learning lessons of how to stand up to bullies. I could see where they were going with the planned trilogy. Each new offspring of Godzilla will be closer and closer to the Godzilla monster of the Japanese films. The biggest problem with Godzilla by the time it reached 1994 is that he got too powerful. This is a trend that Toho kept going up until Godzilla Final Wars. It was getting less and less likely that Godzilla had any threat against him. Godzilla 1998 made him vulnerable again. While at the same time being a serious threat. All the actors had their A game on in this movie. None of them, or the movie, deserved any raspberry awards.
@Huettnera
@Huettnera 6 ай бұрын
This "built up" thing about the planned trilogy is exactly what they did with the current "Monsterverse"-Run! They kept it relatively "down to earth" with the first movie and to a lesser degree with "Skull Island", built up on that with "King of the monsters" and went up from there until they went totally bonkers with the latest "Godzilla X Kong - The new empire".

"I knew the stupid-tuna eating monster was useless." When I find even more interesting that back in 1994 they had the idea for an American Godzilla film in fact there has been behind the scenes pictures that are still around of the production and even the suits that they were going to use in the monster that Godzilla was going to fight against.

Thank you, the description at the end sums this up to a tee. I saw this when I was 8 and loved it. It still appeals to the 8 year old boy in me, and when Corridor Crew featured the film in their VFX artists react series, they mentioned how much time was taken both in practical effects and CGI. The score by David Arnold is brilliant, and the cinematography is top notch as well, with the use of real atomic bomb footage far more impactful than any CGI nuke ever seen. My family enjoyed it on VHS, a friend found it enjoyable at a sleepover, I've met fans of it since and when I watched it with my wife she had no complaints. I can understand why fans of the series would hate it, but I can overlook the sometimes painfully bad acting and soak up the spectacle. I even saw a disaster movie countdown on TV where this version made it into the Top 40 (35th place I think).

However, with a few promotional clips in this 21 minute promotional trailer, I have been convinced against my will and and all the logic of the known and unkown universes to hunt this movie and watch it. However, Minty does not have enough money to make me reread the attrocity of a novelization at least. Well done, Minty. I absolutely loved the gritty/serious presentation of the original as well as goofball entries into the franchise. And i saw that very same movie teaser that you spoke of at the beginning of the video. Regardless, i knew I was gonna go and see "Godzilla 98" but by no means was I counting down the days till it's release. After purchasing my ticket, picking up a tasty treat and finding a good seat i was ready to see the film. Going in I had set the bar fairly low and had little to no real expectations...........then as the ending credits rolled. A moment or two of silence passed and my buddy turns and says "what the hell just happened? I thought we were suppose to see the new Godzilla movie, not JP : The Lost World 2.5! Veteran Godzilla actors Haruo Nakajima and Kenpachiro Satsuma, as well as Shusuke Kaneko (who would later direct Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack), were also critical of the film and its character. Nakajima stated "its face looks like an iguana and its body and limbs look like a frog". Satsuma walked out of a screening of the film at fan convention G-Con '98 in Chicago, stating, "it's not Godzilla, it doesn't have his spirit". Toho publicist Yosuke Ogura later called TriStar's design a "disaster."

And Minty was incorrect on the old fisherman that was based on JD Lees, editor of G-Fan magazine. it was the truck driver falling out the door as Zilla picks the truck up.

@@derrickrobertson2317Toho later on retconned Zilla to being a separate kaiju entirely, so yeah safe to say Toho was likely never really a fan of it but let it go through. It definitely made Final Wars way better looking in comparison lol

I was 3 years old when the movie came out, but I remember having the DVD and watching it at home and being introduced to Godzilla. I found it fun, exciting, and an all around great movie. When I saw the other Godzilla movies it made me appreciate the realism of this version more. Nuclear tests that mutated a lizard and the lizard is going on a quest to nest. I remember being excited and hoping to see a sequel of people fighting Godzilla’s offspring again with it going on another rampage. I still watch the movie to this day and always stand behind how I enjoy it

Doesn't sound crazy at all. No Godzilla movies that are being made now will ever top this 90s version. A very young Matthew Broderick gave a stunning performance as the lead.

I love this movie. Probably because of the humor and heart. Personally, I think it is better than some of the more recent ones. Especially King of the Monsters. That movie should have been awesome, but the movie really just evolved around a dysfunctional family, while pretty much everyone else, including Godzilla, was an NPC.

Agreed... despite all the negative opinions this is my fav godzilla movie... the original godzilla just doesnt seem scary to me with its upright human like posture ... but this giant iguana looked realistically scary and believeable. I also liked that it was set in the rain cuz i grew up in the desert!

Godzilla 98 is an action comedy influenced more by Jurassic Park than the Japanese originals. Pretty sure it was made for kids but people expecting a serious Godzilla movie were of course disappointed.

I LOVE THIS FILM! Great practical and CGI special effects. Great casting. Jean Reno's American accent! A few of the situations were wild and unbelievable but... it's a monster movie. It's all fiction! Do I consider it a 'Godzilla' movie? Yes. It's a reimaging of the character. I LOVE THIS FILM!

Small correction, Godzilla had never been an Iguana or even a reptile at all prior to this film. He was always either a dinosaur or a semi-aquatic creature that evolved from dinosaurs.

I want to see this movie back in 1998 when I was 16 years old and I thought it was only going to the best movie in 1998 finding out ( spoiler alert) that Godzilla is not a dinosaur but a mutant iguana. And also he does not have his atomic breath in this one or as tough.

The reason why it flopped was because it was only released in certain cinemas as a deal was made between the movie producers and the cinema chain. When they realised that this failed it went on public release.

I think you are confusing the story! It had the widest release of a film at the time and it was booked on the best screens of each theater for the first 4 weeks of release. The movie bombs and then they were stuck with empty or near empty screenings for the 4 or so weeks.

I was about 11 when I went to see this movie. Kids today don’t understand how summer blockbusters worked back in the day when the media was so narrow and controlled. It was actually really damn cool. The advertising for this movie made it seem like the biggest thing ever - things like Taco Bell commercials, Wallflower music videos, MTV specials, the works - it was a lot of fun especially at my age. I’ll always LOVE Godzilla ‘98 as a result.

As someone that has watched some of the original Godzilla movies, (I even owned a couple), I liked this this movie. I actually liked the design of this Godzilla more than the original. I do have to admit I would have liked to see more (a more appropriate atomic breath) but I can kinda see what they were going for also. Still overall I enjoyed this movie. I do have to think that if they were to go with another name for the film it might have ended up with a lawsuite for something in the vein of likeness rights or something like that. As far as the young zilla offspring: as someone who watched a lot of nature shows growing up, I anticipated that ending with the surviving egg as it's how that sort of thing works. Ensuring survival of the species and if I had to give one more critique of the film I feel like Dr Nik Tatopoulos would have had that thought too. Of course maybe that's why he found the egg in the animated show. I didn't even know about that show so guess that could be part of it. Personally the fact that this creature is born pregnant makes them a more serious threat than I feel is realized. Especially with how large it gets. I would like to see a sequal for this if done proper like to remember the events of this film, and giving it a proper breath weapon and making it a bit more agressive. I don't think it would be outside the realm of possibility to give it inherited memories or something so that it could know/remember how it's siblings and mother was destroyed and going for revenge. It's been a while but I could have sworn there were three eggs that survived but I'll have to just re-watch it. But having more than one might be interesting especially if they were the antagonist. But ah well. I still enjoy what we got from 1998.

Hey Minty...are you aware of the other Japanese giant that actually had a TV series made in Australia, also in the 90's? It's called, "Ultraman Towards the future."
