I never hated G98. I was 11 when it came out and it was the only movie my family ever watched together in theaters. Sure, I was disappointed when I first watched it, I kept thinking Godzilla was going to fight another monster at some point during it. When I got the VHS for Christmas I rewatched it and that disappointment was gone. I'll admit it was the first time I ever looked forward to a movie only to watch it and see it wasn't what I had built in my head. A thing I actively avoid doing now well into my late 30's. I didn't know that other people hated the movie until we got internet in late 2001. It broke my heart to see how much people hated it. I remember telling my girlfriend at school "I don't think I like the internet; people are mean and stupid there." She would eventually become my wife and just a few weeks ago found out what I meant by that. All these years she had thought I was picked on by trolls or something. Nope, I was just upset that other people were shitting on the things I liked. Interestingly enough I finally got to watch Godzilla vs Destoroyah this last weekend. I find a lot of that movie seems to have inspired a number of things in the TriStar film. For starters someone humming "Singing in the rain". The smaller Destoroyahs felt very much like something pulled from Aliens and in turn changed the way I now see the Madison Square Garden scene. Then you have both Godzilla's coming across the bodies of their young and becoming upset. Maybe if there was some sort of throwaway scene of "We've hit it with everything we got." Then some military guy just goes "Not everything, the guys in the lab have been cooking up a new missile, it might give us a chance." Then when the missiles are shot at Godzilla we see some ominous words on the side of them. I think more people would have enjoyed the film. Not a lot more, but perhaps enough that the back-and-forth banter of the last 25 years wouldn't be as volatile. I'll shut up now.

This movie feels like one of the drafts was made to be a comedy, then only a few things were changed to make it more serious. Between the military being ridiculously incompetent, destroying more of Manhattan than Godzilla, to all of the quips, to casting Matthew Broderick as the lead.

Thank you so much! I tried to include a lot of personal anecdotes throughout the video and to really make it my own. So much has already been said about Godzilla (1998), I really found it difficult to say something that hasn’t already been said before. I’m glad to have succeeded in that aspect. Thanks for watching!

Great review and I agree, the build up, music and the atmosphere in the beginning are very well done. I liked the film as a kid far more than as an adult. But honestly if it was more like the cartoon I think it would have been more well received

I remember thinking the VHS box to the movie was the coolest thing as a kid, because it had a 3d texture on the box matching Godzillas scales. I let my cousins borrow the movie for a week and when i got it back they lost the box somehow but not the tape. Needless to say i was VERY upset.

This is gonna sound edgy but I am being real here: America would never be able to make a good Godzilla movie set in the states pre 9/11. America was simply never really protrayed as being in serious danger as a nation, as an institution on a cataclysmic scale in film, because no one could ever imagine it. Most of the buildings are even bigger than Godzilla, as if to say Zilla was not a natural disaster, or an attack on the city, instead its just a really really really REALLY big rat running around, and doing what a rat would do at that size. And the people and the city itself treats it as such - a pest infestation, not a cataclysmic event. Americans could never even imagine something like New York being in danger like that and being taken as straight as more serious Godzilla films do in regards to Japan.

I don’t like the Tri-Star movie but I’ve never been one of those types who hate on it. I think Tri-Stars Zilla movie was a great gate way for people, kids especially to get interested in Godzilla as a franchise. Plus I mean it’s not like it’s Batman and Robin bad, least it was a decent monster movie, it just wasn’t a good Godzilla movie.

as a 40 yr old and godzilla fan for as long as i can remember.....i liked the 98 design. i remember the teaser that showed him stomp the trex skeleton. I thought to myself, wow he has a dinosaur foot, That's gonna totally change his design. Then they kept it secret, But on Wednesday Morning when it came out, In the Houston chronicle was a picture of him. Luckily it was discolored and only of his face so when I saw it later that evening It wasn't ruined completely.

Although I never consider this creature as the true Godzilla....this monster would fit nicely in the Monsterverse as a species of Godzilla where it could thrive both on Earth and the Hollow Earth.

I don't care what anyone says - this was a really good movie. I grew up with the goofy rubber suited actors. this was an impactful and amazing reimagining of the OG Godzilla. I do agree it would have been a better received movie if the titular character hadn't been Godzilla. But I really liked the amazing look and realism of the effects. How this looked like a real creature, a feat not to matched again until 2014's Legendary Godzilla. Hate all you want this is a great movie.

It seems hypocritical to say it’s bad because it’s not that accurate because this feels more accurate to Godzilla than shin but i think both of these movies are amazing
@FirewoodMediaTV5 ай бұрын
I would argue it’s bad because the film completely falls apart in the second and third acts. Risks are okay in regard to Godzilla’s characterization but Shin excels in just being a great film that’s well written while this one is far from being anything more than a typical 90s American blockbuster.

Talking about the opening titles, I think both movies had a great opening title sequence. Great score by a great composer. Great imagery. And both tell a story excellently non verbally. The only thing is, the 2014's title sequence pulls a total fake out. Both title sequences look like they're telling the story of how Gojira came to be. The only thing is, as you see part way into the 2014 film, it turns out the the opening title sequence was NOT an origin story, but, a story of "how we tried to kill him but failed." Both title sequences work brilliantly. The French aspect of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA IGUANA was rather unique, in my opinion, and Jean Reno was really good, so was Broderick, and Maria Patillo was tolerable, and Hank Azaria shined like a lighthouse. It's just that, because they were all so terribly written, the rest of the characters were awful. They were mostly just pop culture reference jokes, and got old real fast. As far as your opinion. Your opinion is YOUR opinion. Yes, some of your opinions are different than mine, but that does not make your opinion any less valid than anyone else's opinion. Whenever I'm having a difference of opinion of a movie, or show, or play, or fried chicken, I try not to say why I disagree, I just always say, "I have a different opinion, and here's why." while still understanding that I can understand why "you" have a different opinion. I actually saw a video of someone who used to do movie reviews, and, did a review of the theatrical version of BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, and, somebody else posted a lengthy review of said review, explaining why his review was wrong. So, obviously, he totally has his head up his butt. One of my biggest problems with Zilla, is the effects were inconsistent, and his head changed size drastically from shot to shot. It really got on my nerves.
