@@sarahcharchan6794 I'd have to look it up again, but the basic story was that the Paranormal Activity film that was made a couple of years before we all saw it was shown to that screening, and after some time, the horror fans started walking out. The directors/producers were heartbroken, thinking that the fans didn't like it. But that wasn't the case. The fans walking out were too frightened. They loved it, but it was too intense. The version that we have now is the milder one.

The stuff starting when she moves in is probably related to all the things you mentioned. Most possession stories feature a vulnerable person, usually a woman, who is undergoing some sort of stress. Katie has moved in with her boyfriend. Katie is a student and relies on her boyfriend's finances - a boyfriend who is not portrayed as incredibly responsible with a job that's successfulness is highly dynamic. Katie and Mika start having struggles. All of this puts her in a vulnerable state which is then noticed by some entity. The entity's interactions further stresses her out which feeds the whole process. Mika's antagonizing of the entity does as well.

I agree with you that the Mika character is a jerk, but I know several real couples where the boyfriend/husband is exactly like that (without the haunting 🙂), so for me it was actually even more realistic. I can tell you that that is actually something that can happen because it actually did happen to me. There was a Demon that was actually in my house that required an exorcism, but we didn’t realise how bad it was until one night. I actually got up, walked over to my wife side of the bed and was just staring at her for over half an hour. I couldn’t control myself. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even blink. I woke up the next morning, realising what had happened and said to my wife, we have to get help.

In my opinion, less is more and Roger Ebert was right. I disagree with Mark Kermode’s “want to be scared” tactic. Wanting something only leads to disappointment and dissatisfaction. You have to earn it by the movie being unexpected with its scares. And this applies to any movie or any genre: don’t demand it, let it come naturally.
@leoric45Ай бұрын
It's scary to so many because it touches on things so many homeowners go thru. The strange noises of a house settling or caused by high winds, doors that seem to close on their own, voices outside that you aren't sure are the neighbors of somethings else. You misplace something but swear you sat it right there. Walking down a dark hallway and feeling like something is behind you. This movie plays on those fears that make us ask "is there something here?". Except in this situation there IS something.

I don’t think Mika caused all the problems with the demon. They said in the movie that Katy had been haunted most of her life. Also you mentioned that it didn’t make sense in the one ending where the demon made Katy kill herself. Because why would he do that just as he got her? Well in Christian mythology suicide is considered a one way ticket to hell. So the demon making her do that would give him her soul.
