It's a great action movie, full of thrills and black humour. I visited Alcatraz in 1993, just two years before this was filmed there so it brings back memories. Weirdly you can tell the scenes that Clement and La Frenais rewrote for Connery as the dialogue just seems different ("Some sniper will get his arsch" 😂). Cage doesn't seem to take himself too seriously and It's got a terrific Hans Zimmer score. I also think Ed Harris nearly steals this film from the two leads. This was made right at the beginning of Michael Bay's career and is one of the more watchable films of his back catalogue. His over use of filters and tracking shots was probably influenced by Tony Scott. Incidentally did you know that Bay is related to Leonard Nimoy?
@davidjames579 Жыл бұрын
"Dodging Gang Rape in the showers. Although that happens less these days. Maybe I'm losing my sex appeal" was one of theirs. Jerry Bruckheimer was actually impressed by them so much that he retained them as dialog polishers on his next films. They even wrote a draft of Bad Boys 2, set in London!

Another great bit of dialogue is when Mason and Goodspeed are locked in their cells. Mason is already working his way out via a stripped down mattress he's turned into a rope whilst Goodspeed goes through a speech that ends in"How in the.name of Zeus's butthole did you get out of your cell?", The door suddenly opens and Mason suddenly appears and says something like "trade secrets old chap, trade secrets" leaving Stanley none the wiser. The film is full of eminently quotable bits of dialogue.

The Rock is one of those movies that operates best as a standalone. Now, you can play with the sequel element like they did, but you can't call it "The Rock 2" or have it associated at all with The Rock since it won't have anything to do with Alcatraz. That would lose the name appeal for a follow up. And if you think about it, National Treasure 2 could easily be viewed as The Rock 2. "Somehow Hummel survived" and takes them all on a merry chase of cat and mouse as they have to solve puzzle after puzzle to get to the treasure (or unlock a secret from the microfilm).

On the Bond theory if you watch On Her Majesty's Secret Service, George Lazenby's Bond is after Sean Connery's Bond and in the movie he says "the other guy never had this problem". Which make me wonder if The Rock happened after Connery's last Bond movie and MI5 Disavowed Connery's Bond and hired another and 007 and the name Bond became a codename used by loads of different men
@davidjames579 Жыл бұрын
It's a reference to Prince Charming in Cinderella. The codename doesn't make any sense as Bond himself has used cover names on missions, he has the same relationships with the MI6 staff and Felix Leiter, and there are several references for the different actors who played Bond mourning their dead wife Tracy. If Bond is a codename, then so must every character who's been played by different actors. E.g. Blofeld, Moneypenny, Leiter. Charles Gray played a MI6 agent who is killed in You Only Live Twice but he faked his own murder and came back as Blofeld Incarnation 5 in Diamonds Are Forever? Actor recasting's happen all the time, and it's just accepted. No one's ever said that Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight Trilogy is a codename, as she was played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins and Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight.
@jakabames Жыл бұрын
@@davidjames579 I was just talking about What Bond said in On Her Majesty's Secret Service not characters spanning the whole Film franchise. And what does Batman have to do with Sean Connery or The Rock. I was not talking about people playing the same character just one phrase from one movie and putting forward a theory which makes sense to me (and possible to others).
@davidjames579 Жыл бұрын
@@jakabames "007 and the name Bond became a codename used by loads of different men". That's not just Lazenby's comment. That's the Codename Theory. The only reason different men are Bond is because it's recasting's. The characters aren't supposed to be seeing the character as looking different, same reason no one thought Rachel Dawes in Batman had changed. She hadn't to the characters.
@jakabames Жыл бұрын
@@davidjames579 it is though. Lazenby said that comment in the movie. And his Bond was after Connery's Bond. And I have no idea why you keep mentioning Rachel Dawes from Batman because that has nothing to do with this theory (with the Bond movies or The Rock). I know that Katie's and Maggie's Rachel is the same character. But with Bond, there has always been the theory that they are different people. This goes all the way back to Casino Royale with David Niven.
