My father, Bob Wells (known to Clevelanders as "Hoolihan") has a small role in this film. Every time you see the villain, Richard Crenna, you see him, although he had few lines, he did get a full facial reaction shot when Crenna said my dad would be picking up the check in the restaurant scene. My mother, Barbara Wells, is also in this film as the neighbor who responds "having lunch", and later as a yacht race official. Dad relates that John was the absolutely nicest guy, and working with Crenna and director Carl Reiner was a career highlight for him. I, too, sorely miss John Candy, and count this film as one of my favorites. He was an outstanding talent the likes of which we might never see again.

I have some info on that once planned sequel to Summer Rental. It was planned back in the day, and I saw it in a Paramount Pictures presentation for investors that's online. The film was not just a sequel to Summer Rental, but a loose adaptation of the 1950 British film of the same name, but unfortunately, like you said... he passed away in 1994. But then, years later, Queen Latifah found the script for the abandoned sequel and absolutely loved it and asked for the script to be modified for her, and it would lead to 2006 remake to be made. The story was basically about a person finding out that they have a terminal illness and that they have a short amount of time on earth, so said person goes to a fancy hotel to spend every single moment till their last.
