I am so sick of people spweing that quote on every video on youtube involving Weird Al. "UHF" Wasn't the name of the station. The name was U62. It was called that because on the old TVs in the US, back when antennae were used, there were two settings - VHF and UHF. The VHF stations (i.e. the low channel numbers) were typically the major networks, while the UHF (i.e. the high channel numbers) were often more local or small-time stations.

Personally, being an 80s Child and growing up with his music, I’ve always thought that Weird Al has never gotten enough credit for his non-parody songs; or what people refer to as “pastiche:” Dare To Be Stupid Stuck In A Closet With Vanna White One More Minute You Don’t Love Me Anymore Don’t Download This Song Bob Melanie Pancreas Everything You Know Is Wrong The Night Santa Went Crazy I Remember Larry And, of course, UHF itself!! Thank you, Minty! Who doesn’t love Weird Al?! Briefly, “UHF” was like the KZbin of the PRE-cable TV era when I was growing up in the 70s/early 80s. TVs were like radios, you had to “tune” them in. The VHF channels were the big ones (ABC, NBC, CBS), even before Fox came along! The UHF were all the local stations. Some would barely be visible, even if you fiddled with the “rabbit ears” (anttenae), but others came in just well enough to watch some old cartoons, Gilligan’s Island reruns, or what have you. I spent much of my childhood going ‘round and ‘round that dial and it’s probably where I caught my first glimpse of Godzilla and Doctor Who too! 🤗 Cable TV was such a step up when we all got it! We are absolutely spoiled for choice these days, but your channel is always worth “tuning in”! 🍻
@Alfetta1589 күн бұрын
It's ironic because I gave up on cable some time ago and along with streaming, I've started watching broadcast TV and all the major channels have sub channels that feel like the old UHF stations we grew up with showing tons of old classic TV. The more things change...

@drewtheunspoken39882 күн бұрын
He wasn't in danger of losing his career but he was shaken by the failure of 'UHF.' Both the movie and the soundtrack. His confidence was shaken enough that he contacted Michael Jackson to get permission to do a parody of 'Black or White' called 'Late Night Snack.' It was the only time Michael Jackson refused, and even Weird Al admitted that it was more out of desperation than inspiration. So while 'Off the Deep End' didn't *save* his career, it certainly revitalized it.

Random anecdote: around the beginning of the 2000s, I knew someone working at a video rental store. They would put staff recommendations on a display. One employee put the DVD case for UHF on the display. Then, Weird Al himself was in town for a concert and went to rent a video. He saw UHF on the staff picks, took the DVD case to the counter, and (jokingly) demanded to see the staff member who picked it, apparently so he could thank him. That's all I remember of the anecdote. I don't know if the guy was working or was off, and I don't know if the "thank you" amounted to anything more than appreciation (like concert tickets or something). Anyway, it was a great illustration of how nice Weird Al is.

I'll never forget, when this movie first came out, my friend and I went to see it. We were the only two in the theater, which made it even more funny, to us anyway. We both have twisted senses of humor, and laughed our butts off! Then, I asked him, "I wonder what the projector operator is thinking, about two dudes, laughing so hard at a movie, in an empty theater?" Which made us laugh even harder, LOL! To put our sense of humor into perspective, we also loved Micheal Nezmith's Elephant Parts...

One of my all time favorite childhood movies! It should be in an archive somewhere

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I still quote it regularly hoping someone will pick up on it. If they do, I've made a friend for life! Thanks for covering this! And, even if you don't pronounce everything "right", I'm always fascinated by your accent. It's quite an interesting mix and is always from the heart. I speak more than my native language, and I'm sure people think I sound much stranger than you!

I love Weird Al, and UHF so much. I've owned a copy both during the VHS and DVD eras. I remember showing the movie to one of my friends who literally fell off the couch laughing so hard.

Hey Minty... Good catch on the name of the George Newman character being named after Alfred E. Neuman, the character in Mad Magazine. There is a second similar Easter egg in the film. The Philo character (played by Anthony Geary) is named after Philo T. Farnsworth who was the inventor of the concept of all electronic television. Prior to Farnsworth's inventions television systems relied on mechanical systems such as Nipkow disks to scan the scene in front of the camera into a "raster" of lines. The results were very low resolution. Farnsworth invented all electronic methods of scanning the scene in front of the camera at much higher resolutions. Overall he had about 300 patents awarded over his career, yet he is almost unknown today. I salute Weird Al for paying homage to him!

I remember when Weird Al sent in tapes to Dr. Demento he recorded with just an accordion in his collage dorm bathroom, if not for the good Doctor playing them on his radio show there probably would be no Weird Al. Thank you Dr. Demento for all you did.

Minty, your Fan base is indeed "You either Get It or You Don't". Our Family has had it long before your channel. We are just to know that there are more of "Our own kind of People" out there. 😂😅

Oh how I would love to view the complete, 2 1/2 hour cut of UHF! Come on, Al, let us see it! Thank you, MCA, for covering this wonderfully silly movie! I remember watching this with my daughter, and bonding over the inanity! Pure entertainment, and now, pure nostalgia! Much love from Rhode Island, USA.

One of my favourite films of all time. I saw it at least 3 times while it was in theatres. The Rambo segment and the Spatula City ad were the scenes I remember the most.

I love that you covered UHF. I've been a huge fan of Weird Al since 1982 when I was 7 and have collected every album and every thing else he has done. And in case you didn't know he made a movie before UHF called The Complete Al: the almost true story of Weird Al Yankovic. It was on Amazon prime video a while back so it can be found on streaming. I recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it. And another great video Minty. Thank you for that. You rock!

Love your videos, Minty! No, you don't always pronounce everything correctly (who does?) but I love your enthusiasm & passion, and it's great how you often look at lesser-known or nearly-forgotten movies (like 'UHF'). Keep doing your thing!
