Home owners in South Africa also pay "Rates and taxes"....which are basically council taxes. If you are renting property in South Africa, the rates and taxes are worked into you rental amount.

In SA, historically renters have not had to pay for council tax and water (the landlord pays), but they do pay for electricity. Recently, some landlords have started charging renters for water. In UK, the renter pays for everything. And it’s not cheap at all. To give an idea, our rent in Watford is £1100 for a two bedroom maisonette (much cheaper than London and just outside London), council tax is £175 per month (for ten months, a little extra if you want garden waste taken away too, and it’s going up a little next month), water costs us £205 every six months, gas and electricity varies. In winter we probably spend £100 per month on gas and maybe £70 or £80 on electricity (the tumble dryer is always on the go). WiFi will cost you between £25 and £30 per month for unlimited WiFi. Car insurance will be extremely expensive for your first year, easily a couple of thousand pounds. But take the hit and it will come down soon enough. On that topic, car insurance is compulsory in the UK. Car tax varies a lot. Check online before buying. The engine size and what fuel the car uses affects the amount in a big way. Also get insurance quotes before buying. If buying a property, beware of leasehold properties as opposed to freehold (google the difference). So many things. Maybe I should just make a video myself. But then I’d have to brush my hair. Nah.

Yes in SA we do pay council taxes in the form of refuse (wheelie bin dirt removal) toilet water, housing tax but the infrastructure outside your property like the light pole light and street fixtures haven't heard it here yet.
@killerbye19852 жыл бұрын
The Council Tax is what we call Rate & Taxes in South Africa, which the owner of the property has to pay. So in the UK the occupant pays these expenses, which I feel is fair.
@matthewsmith9082 жыл бұрын
I don't think 'fair' really comes into it, either way the tenant generally pays either through directly to the council or by paying rent to the owner, and their rent payment should cover the mortgage, taxes, maintenance, etc
@Iam_CeceBrown3 жыл бұрын
SA pays council fees. We pay the city of cape town for refuse removals, water, etc. It's a bill we very familiar with.

@@QuirkyLivingSim You pay municipal taxes which are the same as council taxes. That is a monthly fee throughout SA. Maybe where you rented the property owner (landlord) covered that cost along with the levies.

I think the difference here is that if renting in South Africa the council tax isn't a seperate charge that the renter pays. The owner would generally cover that and the renter would just pay the flat rent rate, water, and lights.

Now which card, "ATM or Oyster" card, as, my sons are studying next year and I purchased them the Oyster transport card for freedom of movement.. Edinburgh lot more better than London. Go to the lakes in Scotland. Drinking water is great in Scotland straight from the tap. Can't convert pounds to rands. Look at Cape Town small gardens even 3 million rand does not get you big garden in Cape Town. Many people standing at traffic lights with university degrees in South Africa.

For some reason I don't think that me going to the UK to save money will work because most of my income in the UK would go to paying rent etc? So essentially living between both SA and UK. How did you manage to get a rental in the UK we are leaving soon? We have approached rental agencies but no luck
@QuirkyLivingSim3 жыл бұрын
My husband stayed in an AirBnB for three months until I came over and then we started renting. Do you already have a job? Proof of your employment should help. For the first house in Oxford it wasn't that hard to find a place but for our second flat here in Edinburgh we were also rejected for a few places and they don't give you a reason why. My advice would be to apply for as many places as possible and maybe stay in a cheap AirBnB for a while. This will also give you time to check out the areas because some of the places are not as nice as they look and you don't want to commit to anything long term before seeing it in person.

@jamesarc8192 Жыл бұрын
@@masonldn8647 Ah credit history. When you land in the UK you do not have a history. When you go to open a bank account you need to provide proof of identity. Easy you think, nah, SA ID? Forget about it, looks suspiciously foreign. The UK has no ID system, so what they want is to see utility bills as proof of address. Oh hold on you have not managed to rent yet? Why? You do not have a bank account confirming proof of income!
