I am 65, an old fart from a different generation. I started carrying a pocket knife in 2nd grade. I earned one because I could prove to my Dad that I knew how to put a razor edge on it. When I was driving at age 15, after getting an ag hardship license, I carried a 30-30 in the gun rack in my truck, that I paid for, not my parents. I ran trap lines in the winter, sold the pelts. I used a knife to skin the coons. I still carry a knife every day.

Yep my favorite that's always in a little holster pouch on my belt is the streamlight micro stream.. high and low settings that's all I need and rechargeable.. Im adding extra strength pain killer to this list. If you're in pain, there's a good chance you will slow waaaay down or even just wear out and give up. Learn to take the meds dry since you may not have water. You may even need to wash it down with chewed up leaves or grass/flowers/berries etc so knowing what grows around you is imperative! THE MORE YOU KNOW THE LESS YOU HAVE TO CARRY
@DrSchor
@DrSchor Жыл бұрын
The whole point of why pain developed in us is to warn us not to use the body part, until you have found a cause for the pain and treated it. Pain meds that just cover up the pain while you continue to move will make the situation worse

I keep a small medium grit Arkansas stone in my backpack. It works. Simple as it gets. Also, the hocky puck round stones are excellent for keeping an ax super sharp. The key for an ax is, do not use it until it will not cut butter. Sharpen it throughout your work / tasks. I recommend any of the good Northern European origin forest axes. They are smaller than American ax designs, and can be carried strapped to a pack quite easily. Also, make sure you have a cover for it to protect the blade.

Back in 1990 when I was a limousine driver.. I was picking up a customer at Westchester county airport.. a small airport here in Connecticut.. I was in the building and all the lights went out!! There weren't many windows in that old terminal and it was very very dark not many emergency lights for some reason either.. luckily I had a AA×2 mini maglite on me.. in fact some of the airport personnel asked if they could borrow it for a minute to do a task... It definitely proves the importance of a flashlight.. of course flashlights have improved so much with the LED and rechargeable lithium batteries. My current EDC flashlight is a streamlight microstream.. I use it all the time!

My dad gave me a Swiss army SD tiny keychain knife in 1979.. so so handy that I have carried one on every keychain I have since that first one.. the blade comes in handy.. the nail file with the screwdriver tip I used to tighten screws in a pinch and it works on Phillips head and a pinch also. The scissors come in really handy especially for hangnails and broken nails and all kinds of trimming chores... The tweezers is great for pulling out splinters.. and a toothpick does come in handy when I get a aggravating piece of food caught in my teeth.. of course I carry a pocket folding knife also. My most carried one is the Spyderco delica.. it just works for me..

If you are worried about an EMP destroying your quartz watch, put one in a faraday bag or buy a replacement movement - about $20 for most watches - and store it in a faraday bag. You can swap out the movement with a few simple tools. Once a manual wind watch goes, good luck finding someone to service it.

I carried a pocket knife all my life up until I was 37 years old when I started a job that required me to be in and out of county courthouses all day. Some of the courthouse security would take your knife and give you a claim ticket to pick it up when you left. Others, like Fulton county, in the city of Atlanta would just confiscate it. They wouldn't even allow you to take it back out to your car, they just took it and threatened to make you leave if you objected. Now that I'm no longer working that job after 20 years, I'm back to carrying a knife all the time. I usually have a Benchmade 945 mini along with a SAK Tinker in my pocket and I also keep a Mora Kniv in each vehicle and smaller No.7 Opinels in the console's. The Opinels are great slicey little folders for impromptu food prep when you're out on the roadtrip. There's even an old school Buck 110 in the door pocket of my jeep.

I prefer a multitool for EDC as you are less likely to be pulled up by the police for carrying it than a fixed blade, as they are forbidden. But even then I would only carry the multitool when I have been using it or doing some tasks that may require its use. Get a Leatherman tool as they have a lifetime guarantee and I have used that when a spring broke. I don't know where you can even buy a watch that has a replacement battery, most of them now are rechargeable which can be an issue, but a small solar battery pack to recharge from are easy to get. I find that a smart watch is more suitable for my needs and some have excellent health related functions that are handy for an old bloke like me.

The first one lasted for about 5 years. It was still working when I retired it. A piece of the band broke and that’s why I retired it. I have 2 real g shocks and some other watches that are 150 to 250 dollar watches that I never wear just because this watch has just really impressed me and it’s just right for me. The only time I change watches is when I need a nice dress watch and it’s always a fossil that my wife got me for our first anniversary.

I'd like to converse with you South Carolina more country prepares about urban prepping. There are so many things people in small towns, rural places can and should do that are not practical here in an urban area like Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Portland or now South Cities like Charlotte NC, Nashville TN, Atlanta etc. I know people in the South don't use mass transit or walk much (that's a shame) everything is about being safe in their cars, trucks or then on a camping trip when they can carry backpacks, bear sprays and firearms. That's really not practical and will call attention to someone here in a big city, University community. One tool I highly recommend for urban prepping is: A small concealable video recorded, one that can be easily uploaded to a desktop computer and edited to make your/our version of the encounter fit our narrative and not the "Woke", Antifa, Lugenpresse, BLM narrative. Some of the key events in my lifetime have been. Rodney King beating followed by mass riots after the police were found not guilty The death of drug dealer George Floyd with a police officer kneeling on Floyd and a short section of the video where Floyd says; "I can't breath". These encounters are heavily, heavily edited by the lying press to make the Cops look like bad guys or even killers - the police in Minneapolis were actually prosecuted and convicted for murder. In the Rodney King case the media never showed Rodney King's car driving at over 100 MPH or resisting police orders to stay in the car, fighting with police, resisting takers etc. Same with George Floyd. With Kyle Rittenhouse there was video that eventually exonerated him - video of ANtifa thugs (one with serious sexual crimes in his past) attacking Kyle with skateboard club and actually hand guns shooting at Kyle. The infamous Rolling Stones Altamont CA concert where Hell's Angels security killed a Black A American with a knife went to trial but the HA was found not guilty because a video showed the deceased had a drawn gun. All of this hinged on (edited) video. So to be prepared, regular Americans should carry some video recording device and learn how to edit the video in short segments to present the preppier person's narrative, not the Anti American Woke, Antifa, Lib Leftist, BLM's narrative. I would say that a video camera is more important for urban survival than pretty much everything else in that preppier bag.

05:00 here in Illinois, we have some of the most absurd gun laws in the country, by some amazing twist, we have no state restrictions on knives! Some require a State Police FOID card to carry (autos, OTF, switchblades) but they’re still legal to carry if you do have a FOID. The only thing that will get you in trouble is using a knife to commit a crime (or trying to take one into a courthouse or a school or anywhere with a metal detector, but even then they will just tell you to take it to your car and come back). 13:00 I get the $1.97 pen lights from Walmart, two or three at a time. You can buy new ones for less than the cost of new batteries.

I have a couple of friends who are women that carry guns in a holster that hangs from the middle of their bra! You can make it face left or right and (because your breasts stick out to various degrees😊)the pew pew stick tucks neatly underneath them and then if you have to access the protection, you just lift the front of your shirt up and grab your it.

I enjoyed your conversation about wrist watches. As for quartz versus mechanical, I have the opposite situation. For some reason, hand-wind watches will not run on me. That's sad, but automatics run, and quartz watches run just fine, so I still have options 👍

My Dad had a problem with mechanical watches. Only a few brands would keep time accurately. They told him that he had too much electricity in his system. He ran on nervous energy for decades. He used to fly from Central Washington to San Francisco and go to Golden Gate Auto Auction. Buy two cars and tow one back driving all night.

Much cheaper option to bear spray is bee spray. I keep a can in each vehicle. 25 ft of the foaming spray in the eyes would not be a good time. Big can, only a few bucks, and it’s bee spray if you have to kill some wasps. Not as suspicious either.

It is wonderful that you talk about things that are good to have, but can you put a list of them for those of us that don't know the actual name of the items. I tried to find one of the flash lights you mention, but I think I am miss spelling the name I thought I heard you say. Was Merado Flashlight? I searched with that spelling and no luck.

Both have a pressurized contents. You shouldn't leave either in a hot car. Valves can leak. If that happens, you won't want to drive your car for a while.
