Probably. The fight took place in Japan so I don't know their laws, but in the US is certainly would have been assault. I can't imagine Japan's laws about such matters being much different.

In the US, police usually defer to a governing body if there is one. Although, if legal charges were brought, it'd probably be battery.

@@thailine75 Yeah, charges are unlikely because the authorities would defer to the sanctioning body but what happened was still legally some kind of assault or assault and battery in the US. I'd imagine fights would fall under "mutual combat" rules where two people can fight if they agree to but there are limits. You can agree to fight someone and if you knock them out, that's fine. If you keep attacking them after they're knocked out you move into illegal activity.
