I can't say if it's too soon for him to make that jump in competition level, but what I can say is that he hasn't earned a title shot. However, no one else really has. Royval had a shot recently, Moreno recently lost the title and then to Royval, Albazi got handed a decision he didn't win against Kara-France, Kara-France has that loss as his last fight and lost to Moreno before that, Mokaev only just made it to the higher rankings, before his last fight this last weekend Perez was on a 3 fight loosing skid that includes the champion and Mokaev, and Nicolau was coming off a loss to Royval. My guess is that they just had to have Pantoja in Brazil no matter what, especially after moving Pereira vs Hill to UFC 300 instead, and Erceg wasn't the first one they called to offer that fight to, but he was the first one to accept it. They probably called Albazi and Mokaev first, maybe even Kape, and for whatever reason they couldn't take the fight, then called Erceg and he was in. He was just at the right place in the right time to answer the call, and If that's what happened then fair enough, sometimes being the only one there to take it is enough to earn it, but I don't think they planned to build this fight.
