Big tip! Use the best summon in the game any chance you can in a boss fight: Tinkerbell. Unlike other summons, summoning her doesn't remove Donald and Goofy from the fight. She heals Sora, Donald, and Goofy over time and also completely revives Sora if you happen to get killed. Tinkerbell combined with Aero/ra/ga makes you damn near invincible if you play wisely.

How does the shield help with leveling up? I’ve always picked the sword, and never had trouble otherwise.

You get the skills that let you survive much earlier, and even some skills that help you kill enemies almost instantly like Slapshot. It's not mandatory but it makes the game a lot easier, which in turn makes leveling up easier.

Probably not, theres a lot going on, and a lot of menus and reading. The combat isn't difficult on a low difficulty, but all the cutscenes and menu's and the like will probably have a kid as young as five lose interest. You know your kid best though, if you think he has the attention span for it, its a great game.
