I came back to add this to the guide: I've never seen anyone put this in a video over the 10 years I've played. I'm certain it has been, just never hear it anywhere and it should be standard knowledge. If you crouch, you can scale a sheer wall, never fall or sprain anything. When you look down, if you can see the surface of the wall, snow, whatever...then it is less than 90 degrees and you can scale it. Just crouch, walk forward and DO NOT GO where you cannot see the wall's surface. About 90% of the rope climbs in the game can be scaled just by walking 20 feet away from the rope and crouch-scaling down. Also, when walking on uneven terrain (where you get a slope warning), walk perpendicular to the slope, that is; straight up the slope or down the slope. Your sprain chance is raised by 0.33% for every degree off of center. So, if you walk at a 45 degree angle up a steep slope (shoe type slides this math around a little, but the rule is the same) you have a (45 x 0.33 = 14.85%) chance per meter to get a sprain. If you walk directly up or down the sharp slope it is a 0.33% chance per meter, practically non-existent. Shoe type matters. Work boots for instance may have a much better thermal rating, but they are inflexible and drastically raise the sprain percentage (0.45% per degree). However, Trail Boots, while inferior in thermal value, lower the sprain chance to a 0.16% per degree base. The sharpness of the slope also starts at a much lower base and ramps up as the slope sharpens. Hope this helps someone. My deepest love to Bashrobe for his magnificent guides.

It's worth noting that the Ravine is the one spot in the game where you do NOT want to bypass the rope climb by scaling down the cliff face Skyrim-style. The Ravine is coded with a death zone that will kill the player instantly if you try. Always use the rope in the Ravine.

Great video! I know you briefly mentioned slope. I just wanted to add that this can combine very conveniently with the fact that wolves do not get a bonus from slope and that wolves can frequently surprise you when cresting hills(due to line of sight issues.) In these situations if you turn around and sprint back down the hill you can create an enormous gap which gives tons of time to plan a course of action for dealing with the wolf as it slowly charges after you.
@Bashrobe7 ай бұрын
Yes, I mention this a bit too briefly in tip 9, I don't say it or show it, probably should have as it's even more powerful than pavement bonus (15%) or max tailwind bonus (20%) as max downhill bonus is around twice the usual speed. Always good practice to engage wolves uphill or upwind to have a plan B if the shot fails 😀
@brstarman17 күн бұрын
Great information here, its always nice to have a detailed breakdown. I think that the wobble speed being that high demonstrates that it needs to be toned down, and taking away anti wobble measures is just spiteful in light of that. Not to mention why they should even care about that with the outstanding bugs.

I've never been quite sure if walking faster on pavement was something actually in the game or just one of those things which people say exists because it sounds like it should be true. Good to know it's actually a thing. The travois specifics are also really good to know - seems like 50-60 kg inside is the sweet spot. I'm actually surprised to learn that 0/30 and 30/30 kilos have the same movement speed, because I've always gotten the impression that encumbrance under the maximum still mattered a little. Seems really weird that the wind penalty is actually not as harsh in worse wind, but I think it might be intentional. Blizzards would be really frustrating if you could barely move in them, even though it's realistic.
@Bashrobe7 ай бұрын
Yep, blizzards are very deadly already, walking at half the speed would make them twice as deadly. Whether it was originally intended or not, it's probably not gonna change at this point.

@Zaknafein7 ай бұрын
Great video. I always felt I moved faster on roads, but thought it perhaps was just an illusion. Now I know. Also the lack of blizzard penalty makes sense and is likely deliberate, as you say, otherwise going against the wind in a blizzard will drain your health really fast. How does the Blizzard Walker feat affect this btw?
@Bashrobe7 ай бұрын
Thanks, Blizzard walker negates 25% penalty like the badge says, I haven't found anything unusual. Fortunately it doesn't reduce the bonus from tailwind or anything like that, and the reduced penalty scales with wind strength/angle as expected. The fact that there's no movement penalty in blizzards makes the name a bit ironic, as the feat has zero benefit during blizzards, but helps the most with medium strength headwind.
@Zaknafein7 ай бұрын
@@Bashrobe So does that mean that if the movement penalty is 30% during wind, then having the feat means its just a 5% reduction? Is it a blanket 25% or does it scale somehow?
@Bashrobe7 ай бұрын
@@Zaknafein It appears to be multiplicative. I tested it at max penalty (25mph), then during blizzard (no penalty), and at midpoint between the two (45 mph). The penalty is always 25% less than without the feat. So a 30% penalty would turn into 22.5%, not 5%. I remember hearing Blizzard walker was additive (30% into 5%) when I got into TLD, but maybe people just tried to test it at different wind strengths and angles back then, and this misconception was born.
@Zaknafein7 ай бұрын
@@Bashrobe I see. Thank you. Seems like a pretty pointless feat in that case.
@Bashrobe7 ай бұрын
@@Zaknafein Yeah I never really pick it on loper. I think it's still better than most, though like half feats provide very little benefit anyway 😀IMO it's still probably somewhere between 3rd-5th best and might be useful for lower difficulties as headwind occurs eventually and even the 25% lower penalty is nice, since headwind is sooo annoying.

How exactly does one "tap sprint"? This is the first time I hear about this
@Bashrobe7 ай бұрын
It's exactly what it sounds like. You tap the sprint button instead of holding it. You may wanna hold it for the first second or so to get the momentum going and then just tap it. Won't work too well if you're slowed down for any reason (encumbered, headwind) but otherwise not too hard to pull off, and pretty much always worth it (unless you're running away from charging wildlife, that 5-10% speed difference from full sprint matters too much in that case)
@simon43217 ай бұрын
Just to be clear about the overencumbrance system: The maximum carry capacity is 45kg +3kg from a rabbit pie. Does is really not make any difference regarding walking speed if you carry 48kg like that (no 'sprain risk') or without the well fed bonus, moose satchel, technical backpack and rabbit pie? The only benefit from all of those would then be to be able to climb ropes and not be seen as 'weak' by wolves, right?
@Bashrobe7 ай бұрын
You can also carry more before being encumbered, and it does speed you up if you're encumbered. E.g. 50/40kg would slow you down by ~33%, but if you get to 48kg capacity you'd only get slowed down by 6.7%.

Have you ever wondered why in Interloper when walking you only have one mark on the sleep counter while in any other difficulty you have two marks?

Great video. Raise the question for me. As you said movement on pavement is faster. Does a Travois lose durability faster being dragged over ice and pavement than snow?
@Bashrobe7 ай бұрын
I tested it real quick, lost about 1.67% condition on both snow and ice per IRL minute. But on pavement it lost 2.2%. Now keep in mind you move faster on pavement, and the travois will decay faster if you move faster. But the rate is more than 15% (bonus you get on pavement) higher than on snow/ice, so it looks like the decay is slightly higher on paved roads, but not by too much.

Very easy to do these tests for anyone with PC and dev console mod (debug_weather command shows player speed) if they want to play around with it. IIRC only one more terrain type, something called "shallow snow" gives a massive 50% movement speed bonus, but tbh I've never seen such large bonus anywhere, I think it's some dead code or used for testing purposes.
