I love the idea of the prep books so much! I know about social stories in an autism setting but always wondered how it could be transferred to a more neurotypical child effectively. I wonder, child dependent obviously, at this age they if they are able could they also have some input in development of certain stories too as they as they navigate things - eg when they prefer to share they're adopted to certain people, what happens when you go on holiday. Or maybe that would be too much!?

I think it's a great idea to involve them as much as you can. Obviously it may work better for children 8 plus. Like you say, it could be harder to talk about things with children who are neuro diverse...no harm in trying though 🤔 😕

Thanks for sharing your experiences with me, I have enjoyed though about fostering for years but now I feel I'm in a position where I have the time and income to offer my services, wish me luck and thanks again

@@Flylittlebirds Helping them adjust to a new school (middle & high school dynamics are much more complex than elementary level), handling technology (social media, internet, cell phones, etc), building relationships with teens (I have a 12 & 14 yo bio kids but I’ve had 12/14 years to build those connections), fostering/guiding to independence (my state requires older kids be taught daily living skills), learning to drive, college/career planning, puberty, transitioning to adulthood, etc. I think a lot of people are intimidated by teens. I’m less so since I have children & nieces/nephews in that age group, but helping a new/relatively unknown teenager adjust and succeed takes a different approach than younger kids. I’m an information gatherer so I’m always looking for the advice & experiences of knowledgeable folks to prepare

One option that we are most likely going for name change is switching birth surname to be middle name and having our last name. There was a great fear from our wee one initially that they would change who they are completely if they changed name. We have not pressured to change at all but one evening they told us their transition toy was going to change their name to include both our and birth last name. Since then they have decided they wish to do the same. Another thing I would agree with is it they are happy with sharing they are adopted then don't hide it from other parents. Our wee one tells most her story and being open has meant that other parents and the teachers to the extra mile

Yes, that is certainly a challenge!! I must admit, there was always an expectation that we would just do it. It's something you wanted included on this video??
