God, the "Don't be risky and pay extreme attention" tip reminded me of my possibly dumbest death possible, stalker, day probably 300ish, went finally to the cannery to get some bullets remade and as you know, there are a lot of canned sardines in the boxes there, so I nomed on some of those, got food poisoning, no big deal right, just rest and you will be right as rain, now you know there is a thing that Long Dark does when something is wrong with your health, it does put a little exclamation mark next to your condition to tell you "Hey dummy, something is wrong, take a look", I had food poisoning before so I knew what to do and how to survive it, had the food, water with me, it was fine, then that night I got the aurora lights, went in the workshop all happy and chummy and got jumped by Fluffy 2.0 in there, Fluffy took a big chunk out of my right arm and it was bleeding, now you know about the thing that Long Dark does when something is wrong with your health... I thought I had food poisoning, but was actually bleeding heavily as I confidently laid down my sleeping bag, fell asleep and promptly bled out by the ammunition workbench.

Yeah. Sounds familiar with my own dumb death. Was well prepared with water food, clothing etc, and want to explore ash canyon, wich I don’t know very good. Wasn’t patient enough to wait for full health, and explored it with 33% of health. Was to stingy to use a match for a torch and a wolf ended my run. So unnecessary…

This game has done for my anxiety what Dark Souls did for my depression and I never miss a chance to recommend this game to anyone who even wants to dip their toes in survival games. I never thought I'd have a survival game in my top 5 (even Minecraft only hovers at a comfy 8 for me), but The Long Dark has itself colored in full. The atmosphere, the gameplay loop, the risk reward in exploration, the sense of isolation and self reliance, the curiosity, the challenge (especially on higher difficulties), the way the game makes the day to day struggle feel so authentic and immersive. It's about as near perfect as you can get with a game.

The first two days you just need to run. Run as fast as you can to loot the main places and if you are close, get to Mystery Lake as fast as possible. There is almost always a magnifying glass there in camp office and also tons of rabbits or catstalks to collect, so you can survive the first few days. And when you are stable enough and gathered enough food and clothing to not freeze immediatly, you can easily get to the forge in Forlorn Muskeg to get some arrow heads so you can craft yourself a bow and go deer hunting. After that you basically made it and from then on just need to not do any stupid mistakes that get you killed. Craft rabbit earmuffs, gloves and deerskin shoes and pants. If you dare, get a bearskin bedroll. Then you dont need to worry about cabin fever anymore. On my longest Interloper run I started on Timberwolf Mountain. Luckily I was near the mountaineers hut, found matches and killed some rabbits. Cooked a ton of water, got some food, slept and went down to Pleasant valley after a night. Almost died there because of food and cold. Looted the common places and ran to Mystery Lake. Found a magnifying lens there. From then on it was not so hard anymore. You just need a ton of luck in the beginning.

From the beginning of a run, I would highly recommend that you DO NOT use revolver ammo. You should max out your gunsmithing and deconstruct all your revolver ammo and turn it into rifle ammo or at least store the supplies in the region to do ammo runs when you run out and need to make more. Furthermore, use the rifle to exclusively hunt moose (maybe bears, if you are inexperienced with the bow but do realize that bears bleed and will die from blood loss, moose don’t bleed and therefore can’t bleed out) as the rifle does more base damage and will make killing moose a lot easier. This is my recommendation, yes the revolver is great against wolves but a bow is good too… if you know how to use it and are cautious around areas with a lot of wolves so you don’t get surprised. But your rifle ammo supply will last much much longer if you conserve and use it when it is most beneficial and resources efficient.
@Zaknafein3 жыл бұрын
For non-interloper players, yes this is great advice in order to maximize your ammo type. I would add that ammo is abundant, though - on my casual Stalker runs I have walked around with 300+ bullets, so they are not exactly rare and can be recrafted if shells are picked up after use.

Fairly new to the game but one thing I will do to pass the time while I try for 500 days is that I am only going to have 1 base and I may relocate my base to different regions every so often. I've only been in and explored 3 regions of the world map so far, thats how new to the game I am and have never stepped foot in all the others yet so still no idea where most things are so as I explore a new part of the world I spend several days or a week relocating everything in my base to a new home in the new area I wish to explore. It requires going back and forth more then a dozen times but what else am I going to do with my time ?

I’m sorry but if I get jumped by a wolf coming out of a cave where it shouldn’t be except that it’s glitched somehow, I shut off my Xbox and load the save. If I run around with scent or where wolves always are, then fine you get what you deserve. But the game is already hard enough that for me to accomplish a run without ever bailing out would be impossible. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been jumped out of the blue when it made no sense. Also, sometimes you throw the torch at and literally hit them in the head and they charge you anyway when it’s not an Aurora, and also sometimes when they charge you, at the last second they run sideways until they jump on you, which makes 0 sense and makes it impossible to shoot them. I like the difficult of the game, but without consistency, it just kills you when you don’t deserve it and that makes it hard to see how I can prevent it in the future. That’s not just frustrating it’ll make you quit playing and I don’t want to quit.

Hey there, I'm a long-term player but this video raises a few questions for me: how did you stack up so much stuff in the Mountaineer's Hut in TM at the start of the video? You're also not the first Loper player I see keeping 0% meat on them, but whenever I tried it, I always got sick. Is there a reason you're doing this I don't know about? Thank you!
@Zaknafein3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Happy to answer: 1) I am not entirely sure what you mean about the TWM Hut. Are you asking how to stack things? On PC you just drop things and then right click to move the item, or choose "Place" from the Radial menu. On console the buttons are different, but you can do it there too. Is that what you meant? If you meant the content itself, it's just water and tea as you can see. 2) When you reach level 5 cooking you are immune to food poisoning and parasites, so even eating 0% meat will never get you sick. At level 5, you only get sick eating raw meat. I have another tutorial for interloper, and in Tip #8 I explain how cooking is important. You can see it via this timestamped link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYKxl6qlZpJkgpY

Or just play Interloper with no rest, or passive recovery, with only birch bark, and stims, to recover health. Or no birch bark tea, and just stims. To make it even harder, if that is possible, take the same Deadman Run, and make it an Outerloper run where you cannot go into any building with a loading screen, except transition structures, i.e. The Dam, but you are not allowed to sleep in transition caves, only open caves, and structures without a loading screen. Then you could go cattails only Deadman Outerloper.

How do you reveal local maps. Mine doesn't show anything. Is this a difficulty issue? Also how do you unlock the perks? I've seen others starting a playthrough with certain buffers
@Zaknafein3 жыл бұрын
I am actually working on a Beginner's Guide video that covers all of this, so if you check my channel in a week or two it will be there. However, in short: - You uncover maps by using charcoal - Perks (I assume you mean feats) are unlocked as you play the game on survival mode (not custom)
@upursanctum3 жыл бұрын
@@Zaknafein fantastic. I was wondering why I'd need charcoal last night and didn't put the two together. I will watch your next video thanks. I've had this game a while and not played it with only a small stint in the easiest setting for survival and then played winter mute to episode 3. I love the depth. Thanks for the reply

What about the camp office base. This base is First in top Best bases in The Long Dark
@Zaknafein3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a great base. But Trappers Cabin can have a Moose and Bear spawn. Rabbits are outside. Coal in the cave. You are very secure there.

I play on both because i like lopes scarcity. But i enjoy fucking blasting with that rife an revolver lmfao. I wish they have a loper difficulty with guns, called brutal mode or something cooler where bears kill you instantly an wolves do more damage an all attacks cause infections. But allowing you to find guns with keeping the spawns scattered. So instead of two revolver spawns in per area as in stalker. You only get one in brutal.

Why would you chose Trapper's cabin over Camp office for a main base tho?
@kalzamar3 жыл бұрын
Bed has better recovery. Bunny's behind the cabin. No preditors spawn in range. Coal in the cave. Moose spawn nearby. Bear spawn nearby. If you don't harvest the deer nearby, endless feathers.
@philiphaycock38453 жыл бұрын
In Loper, personally I prefer the dam. Easy hunting in the ravine. Protected area outside for cooking. Tons of stuff to break down if killing time. But mostly just having the ravine next door is great.. loads of birch bark, loads of rabbits, no wolves etc
@kalzamar3 жыл бұрын
Just fyi. That fenced in area isn't so protected. If you have stink on you wolves can get through the fence. Ive learned to act as though its not fenced in.

Why did you picked fishing camp in CH instead of garage?
@Zaknafein3 жыл бұрын
The fishing camp have nearby deer, wolves and a possible bear visitor for easy food. Also fishing hut right there There is also an outdoor work bench for reduced cabin fever risk. Lots of wood outside. It is also close to both the Ravine and PV exits. Meanwhile the garage is a constant wolf nest with patroling bear and far from anything. Its spacious but less practical. This is just a suggestion, though - the garage is fine too (especially on lower difficulties).

There is no shortcut, Im afraid. Well, there kinda is one but its not worth it imo. But you only rarely need to go craft ammo, so do it in bulk. Not sure what you meant by fire match/fire things?

@Zaknafein3 жыл бұрын
@Honga Meyo sorry for the late reply. You cannot make a fire during a blizzard with a magnifying glass. It has to be sunny. You will not run out of fire making things in the game. Even if you run out of matches, there are 2-3 mag lenses in the game too and these do not lose condition. So if you run out of matches, you have to rely on sunny days, but its doable.

I'm trying to map out the whole world any tips?
@Zaknafein3 жыл бұрын
If you are doing it on for the achievement, it's easiest to do it on lower difficulties like Pilgrim or Voyager. Other than that, I recommend one region at a time. Establish a base there and then map gradually. Check your journal to see if you are missing any areas.

The thing that I like about this game is the fact that anything can kill you at any time due to your unfortunately stupid decisions like one time I decided I was gonna kill a bear and use its pelt for a coat I ended up shooting this thing 6 times with a rifle then got mauled got back up and pounded another 7 rounds into this thing before it finally died turns out it was a 50 kilogram bear so worth it sort of 😅
