I got my class a in February and by the grace of God I made a perfect score on my pre-trip now the municipality I work for has me as an instructor for the pre-trip ,docking and driving for new and existing employees. I go for my school bus endorsement test tomorrow and I’m scared outta my mind😭 My trainer says I’m a natural, I know my pre trip and could tell you it in my sleep, I practiced my backing yesterday and I did my parallel parking (both sides) my first try, my straight backing and my uneven backing my first try, and unfortunately I couldn’t practice my alley dock because there was a vehicle parked right in the middle of our practice spot..so I got it..BUT I freeze in stressful situations/tests😭 I’m just terrified🥺

Hello Ken I’m not sure how long ago u wrote your comment but I was retired also & bow I’m 69 yrs old & driving full time. I’ve always wanted to deliver new school buses!! Are u doing that now ? If so what company do u drive for? & are they located in Ohio? Did u go thru an agency or directly to the dealer or manufacturer? Sorry so many questions. @@susanslagle-cochran7505 I live in SW Missouri. The 2 companies 1 in Oklahoma, and the other in Kansas (temporaliy shut down). I just took my DOT physical and getting my CDL in a couple of weeks. I haven't hooked up yet with a bus mfg but putting feelers out. I'm also looking for a 3/5 door hatchback with a manual transmission so I can tow it behind the bus. I'm not on FB so how do we share our info?

The part about asking questions is important. Ask them if you can get out of bus and look at the maneuver before executing. Probably yes. But it is a timed test. Regardless, 45 seconds outside the bus might be more insightful than risking that they laid the course out off kilter a bit. Like not square in a square lot.

I actually find that is one of the hardest thing for my students to master. Most are worried about the pretrip inspection but get that easier than talking while driving.

@@techdior that will depend on which class of passenger/school bus license you plan on getting. If you're going for a class B you will want to pass air brakes written test, and road test on a vehicle that is equipped with air brakes. They do make school buses over 26,000lbs without air brakes but most school bus companies do not have these in their fleets. Passing both written and road test including air brakes will make you a highly desirable, and employable school bus driver. Sorry for the late reply but I didn't notice this comment until now.

If you're going to be driving a big bus equipped with air brakes yes. Some big buses don't have air brakes but extremely uncommon currently. You don't need to have air brakes restriction removed to acquire the school bus endorsement however most companies will not have much use for you without it removed unless they have a need for smaller school bus drivers.

Air breaks was the hardest part of all my school bus training I failed twice and on the third time I passed Mainly because it was 20 multiple choice questions and all the answer were so similar

@@dylanrichards7509 Many people give up if they don't pass the first time. I just want everyone to know that this is very common. These tests can be confusing and if air brakes is a part you don't pass at first you still keep credit for the tests you did pass. Don't feel like you're not capable because you didn't pass the first time. Most people don't.

You'll need to learn the general knowledge section, passenger section, and school bus section. You will not need to learn air brakes. For roadtest to get your School bus endorsement you'll need to test on a vehicle that has at least 16 ADULT seating capacity. Otherwise you'll have a class C with the N1 or N2 restriction and no school bus endorsement limiting you to only the smallest of school buses making you less employable.

Most if not all CDL schools don't know about class C, CDL roadtests because they are specific to passenger vehicles only. With the amount they pay their trainers, it would most likely not be cost worthy with what they could reasonably charge for class C training. Your best course of action would be to find a actual school bus company that has a lot of special needs runs. Most special needs students are transported in small school buses and if they have a high demand of small school bus drivers they'll be more inclined to train you just for the class C. I've not heard of a single school bus company that doesn't offer free training and a guaranteed job after passing the roadtest. Which county do you reside in NYS? I may know some companies to suggest. Also may I ask why you are only considering the class C?

I don't know any school bus companies in NYC to suggest. If you see a small school bus driving, almost every school in the state and NYC has a phone on the back. I would also like to mention some laws are different in NYC vs the rest of NYC. In my pretrip video I mention on the front tire that re-treads are not allowed in the front. In NYC they do allow re-treads on the front tires for certain vehicles weights and types however you should know that if you drive outside of NYC you are not protected by these regulation exceptions. If you know you'll be driving outside of NYC for a trip to make sure you don't have re-treads on your front tires. Concerning the fear of driving the big bus, The pretrips for both class C and class B are both pretty extensive with class B not drastically more difficult in terms of how much you need to learn and study. For the written test you don't need to pass all of them at the same time. Many of my students and most people across the country don't pass all of them the on the 1st try. In NYS your passed tests stay active in their system for 6 months. If you pass 2 out of 4 going for class B you won't have to retake the 2 you passed and you can focus only on what you failed to have a successful passing score on the remaining 2. It will cost $10 each time you go regardless of how many tests you take. For the driving aspect many of the parking tests require you to be able to see your back tires in your mirrors clearly which is actually easier in a big bus than the smaller ones. For driving on roads your trainer should take it baby step by baby step in regards to turning without hitting things. You will actually be surprised how quickly you get comfortable driving a much larger vehicle. I was absolutely horrified my 1st drive of a big bus but within 30 minutes I felt way more comfortable. You will also in most cases make more money with a class B. If you still only want to go for the class C start getting the phone numbers off the buses you see and give them a call. Ask questions about pay, hours, and benefits because most of the free training comes with a minimum work agreement from 6 months up 2 years of service in order for it to remain free. You don't want to get stuck somewhere for 2 years being the lowest paid in your region when you could have made way more money training elsewhere. With Covid 19 it is different state by state and even county by county. Some places you can just go in and pick up a book for free. Other States might require a appointment. Most States now have a digital version you can print or download of the DMV website. Most School bus offices have them in stock and might be the easiest option if you'll be training with them.

Aside from the DMV booklet the company you train with should have their own packet with pictures of how to apply the PRETRIP from DMV handbook to the exact vehicle you will be training on. There are several mechanical variations in different school buses and you'll need to be able to identify which items your specific school bus is equipped with.

When I took my CDL test "back in the day" my examiner was directing "left here, right there" etc. I drove the bus under a RR overpass. She asked me "How did I know there was enough overhead clearance?" I responded that I'd driven my personal car MANY times this way before, and also that I knew she wouldn't direct me someplace where the bus would lose it's roof!

This has confused many people with these changes. The best way to explain it is you are not being trained to fix the problems you find but simply find them to know whether or not the bus you're about to fill with children is in fact safe or unsafe to drive. Some of the issues you may find may not lead to a collision incident but could leave you stranded in unsafe location and possible harmful whether and temperature conditions. Checking fluids and belts can help prevent you from breaking down on a highway or dangerous curve.

Knowing that there are actual safety concerns for checking these things before taking a large vehicle on the road combined with good training the stress should be minimal.
