Great videos!!!!!!! I recently became a trainer for a contractor in Rochester, NY. They specialize in special needs, so the fleet is almost 100% small C class license buses. I've used your videos to both help myself and trainees. My passing average is 100%. Than You! Now the company that bought us wants all new drivers to have a B license. Do you have any pre trip videos for the big bus?

In California we get out of the bus and cross the kids over using voice commands and a hand held stop sign (in addition to the amber and red lights). However, for optimum safety our dispatchers develop routes that position pickups and drop-offs on the right, so we don't have to cross anyone over. I've never had to cross anyone, and I've been driving for 9 years.

In NYS we are required to set the parking brake also whenever loading or unloading. Also, when you are crossing a student, you don’t have your hand over the horn in case you had to have that student return to their starting position. Lastly, in NYS we are instructed to have the child check back in with the driver at the second crossover mirror before completing the cross

When I took my CDL test "back in the day" my examiner was directing "left here, right there" etc. I drove the bus under a RR overpass. She asked me "How did I know there was enough overhead clearance?" I responded that I'd driven my personal car MANY times this way before, and also that I knew she wouldn't direct me someplace where the bus would lose it's roof!

Can I ask silly but important question. I recently got hired by First Student for new driver training. We started a few things on the bus and behind the wheel on the first day. As expected I was bit nervous but excited for this new journey. As we were doing forward and backward maneuvers , I was having a bit of trouble with backing. I asked the trainer for some help/guidance in properly backing up but never gave me any help. She just stood there and never said a word. So I am feeling a bit mad/overwhelmed because the trainers are supposed to be there there to properly teach you. Any suggestions for handling this situation or asking a school district/bus company about their training course. I really do want my CDL B but want to make sure I am properly trained. Thank you! Jessica 🙂

Your trainer should be willing and capable to help you with any of your questions you have. It is hard without knowing exactly which issues specifically you were having. I could usually tell what the my trainee was confused with just by watching the tires like body language. Your trainer could just be doing an overall evaluation of your current skills set in maneuvers to see where you need the most work however if that is the case, it should have been communicated to you before or at least after this session. There's also the possibility this person is just a bad trainer that got the job out of desperation by the bus yard you are training with. I would ask more questions to your trainer going forward and if they're completely unwilling to guide you I would speak to a higher management position person and calmly explain the difficulties you are having. This is not to bash first student in any way as they have many garages and not all trainers and garages are created equally. If and when you feel it's necessary to speak above them, make sure you communicate an understanding of the responsibility you are taking on and why you find your trainer to be lacking the skills required to properly train new school bus drivers.

@@cdlanddriving9736 Good evening and thank you for responding back to me. The the maneuvers we were doing were straight driving forward and backing back up straight. Also a few turning maneuvers and cone blind spots. We were training in a group of three of us. Not one on one. The area I questioned the trainer was in doing the backing up straight. My first few attempts was good but I had one moment where I know I was out of angle and wanted to know which way to steer to help straighten me out going back. Not trying to sound dumb but I just wanted some guidance because I never drove anything this big before. I respect the size of the bus and its capabilities. Again the the trainer completely ignored my attempts for guidance and didn't give me feedback at the end of the day. She was to busy talking about going into corrections or the fire department in the local area. Yes I completely understand what you are saying each bus garage or company is different. I have a meeting with a local school district bus garage and so I am wondering what kind of question should I ask them in their training program. So that way I do wind up in this same situation. I will take in consideration what you mentioned in you message to heart. Again I appreciate your time and feedback! Jessica 🙂🙏

@@jessicagalvin363 don't forget that no matter how long the vehicle is, as long as it's not a trailer class A type vehicle you would turn the wheel the same direction as you would your personal vehicle. One thing I would never do is tell a trainee which way to turn the wheel. I politely told them to use their mirrors and keep making adjustments until they were straight again. I'd never not communicate this with them. The goal would not be to leave them hanging clueless but to help them develop the mirror perception and which way turning the wheel would straighten them back out. I made all my trainees back their personal cars into the employee parking lot spots and if they didn't, they didn't train that day. If they fixed it they'd still be allowed to train that day. This is never delivered in an insulting way but people having difficulties backing up is a very common problem. Taking every opportunity to practice both in the bus and personal vehicles is vital to developing the instincts to succeed in the road test. It seems the issue between you and your trainer is their lack of ability to communicate but I can only speculate. Mirror perception is absolutely vital to backing maneuvers and it can be taught by an experienced trainer. Focus on the mirror and see which side is moving further away from straight. Try the wheel in each direction until you seem to be straightening out. Practicing this will make it become second nature to you. If you can do this perfectly in your personal car but are having trouble in the bus, you're letting your nerves get the better of you. It's okay to stop and take a breathe to relax and focus. If backing in general is a weakness in any vehicle take every opportunity to improve through practicing. This can be done in any empty parking lot if your trainer is not helping you develop backing instincts and mirror perception. I hope this has been helpful. I'm trying to give you my full speech as if you were my student with my goal not to give you the answers but develop the skills to answer your own questions because your trainer will not ride with you forever. From what you've told me this trainer seems to not a strong communicator or prioritizing this job which is concerning considering they're teaching drivers to keep children safe. I'd like to add if backing is a weakness of yours, that's okay and is a very common problem that trainers should be able to work with. I might just make an entire video on this because your concern is so common it's scary.

@@cdlanddriving9736 Thank you so much. You explained more in just this brief message than the day of training. Again I will keep all this in mind when I get to train again. Yes it's a bigger vehicle and will take time to fully master. That's ok to me just as long as I have a good trainer there to support me in the journey. Truly appreciate your time in advice on this matter. Have a great night! Jessica 🙂

This has confused many people with these changes. The best way to explain it is you are not being trained to fix the problems you find but simply find them to know whether or not the bus you're about to fill with children is in fact safe or unsafe to drive. Some of the issues you may find may not lead to a collision incident but could leave you stranded in unsafe location and possible harmful whether and temperature conditions. Checking fluids and belts can help prevent you from breaking down on a highway or dangerous curve.

@@scottp2440 If you have a good trainer who breaks it down section by section and gradually puts the entire pre trip together, it shouldn't be stressful even in multi trainee situations. Knowing that there are actual safety concerns for checking these things before taking a large vehicle on the road combined with good training the stress should be minimal.
