The red fabric would make a beautiful trench coat!!❤️

I own a Burberry Trench Coat. It is an olive colored Tencel with the famous Burberry plaid lining. Very light weight. I live in California so light really works here. It is raglan. The original Trench coats were designed for the WWI Field Officers that had to run between the trenches on the front lines and the Headquarters where they got their orders from their COs. It was known as a "trench war," meaning the units of soldiers dug and lived in trenches on the frontlines. So, it was wet, muddy and cold. The trench coat fabric was designed not to rot, to be difficult to see in the conditions (so the officers could make their runs) and to securely carry everything they needed to through fields. That's why they are traditionally "stone" colored and made out an extremely tightly woven cotton. The belts which have D-rings on them were so that they could attach pouches and leather carry containers with maps, plans and orders. The epaulets buttoned in the straps of any case or messenger bag, etc. so it would not slip. The storm flap has a button under it to button the coat closed and just like the belt around the collar. Between the rain and the winds, these officers were really up against harsh conditions. The raglan sleeve is because they wore them over full wool uniforms. A raglan sleeve is deeper and larger than a fitted sleeve. When the war was over these officers were allowed to keep their trench coats. They became symbolic for men who were hardened at a very young age. They came back to a world where young men were goofing around wearing fur coats, straw hats playing the ukulele. So, when you see someone like Humphrey Bogart wearing a trench coat (when the film is supposed to take place after WWI and before WWII), it gives him a quiet air of masculinity with those he encounters knowing "he's one of those guys." Then, Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo starting wearing men's trench coats. And from there, they became a classic Fashion statement. Now days, it seems that the Classic Trench is used mostly for inspiration. I have seen beautiful red trench coats. My vote is for you to make a RED one!! It is your style and therefore, would be a classic for you! (Besides, we all love your style.) ;-)

Red!! Absolutely! I've made the Jack Trench in a grey cream men's summer suiting and lol it's currently unpicked because once i finished it I decided I want less curvy lapels 😂 I have also made a traditional full length trench from a 30 year old Burda pattern in a stretch slubby rayon in a slate blue with white polka dots .. full length all the flaps etc and I love it! It's such fun!

The critique of different patterns was eye-opening. I learned so much about trench coats! I had no idea that all those pieces had purposes! My daughter has a red trench coat. She acquired it (over a decade ago) when she was dressing up as Carmen Sandiego for a costume event. It was from an educational show “Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego”? Carmen was a very iconic figure at the time. It was kind of funny that at the same event a young man showed up as Waldo from “Where’s Waldo?” I’d never want a Where’s Waldo outfit, but would totally love that rocking’ red trench coat from Carmen! So, yeah, you need to rock the red! Thanks for the review of patterns. It was eye-opening for me!

Fantastic timing for me as I am about to embark on a trench. This is a great video and you are so good at outlining the pros and cons of the patterns. I too love Indie patterns because Big 4 give so little information and even if they do have the info you need it is so hard to find. It is a shame because I love the McCalls trench pattern. The red looks amazing on you. Can’t wait to see what you make!

Red chilton! Your lovely face just lit up when you held it up! I once tried on a red trench and DID not buy it (I bought the blue one.) I feel like, in beige you could brighten it up with a red scarf. But the thought of a red coat is so much more fun! I have a ready to wear black trench coat (with all the traditional features from 2007, and I’ve only worn it twice, while on holidays in cold places. I live in the southern hemisphere like you and just don’t wear it where I live. But it’s come in handy. And un-lined floaty version would be a lot more practical for a layering piece for my wardrobe.

Red! Go bold, and it’s an amazing color for you. I have a red embossed cotton in my stash that I plan to make into an Isla Trenchcoat. I want all the bells and whistles. Love your take on the storm flap. I hadn’t given a thought before to how that fits over the bust, so, noted. Thank you

I’ve been looking for knee length jackets and I didn’t know about the Tessuti one - I actually like that as I wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time making an unlined coat as our weather means I couldn’t wear it for long until winter. I agree about the deer & doe - it’s too short. Thanks, really helpful

I actually liked the McCalls one most. I like all the features, because everyone needs that kind of aggravation 😂 Red! Beige would be so drab on you. That would have such wow value 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Or navy blue, which you didn’t order, so definitely red. Just incase you’re interested. Ulysses is pronounced You-liss-ees. He was the one from greek mythology who dreamed up the trojan horse to hide the troops inside, if my dim memory serves.

Thanks for you very well detailed pattern list. Personally, I will go with Cashmerette. The reason behind it is that this is well adjusted with no extra fabric bulk. I would ditch the epaulettes and flap. Most of them have no shape but a belt to sinch the waist and it's too much fabric especially on the waist and the hips. And also, red would look great for you.

Wanted to add that I don't like the patterns personally that have the front rain shield on the incorrect side. The shield should cover the buttoned closure, keeping the rain out of the jacket opening. I think they look silly on the wrong side or when the shield is oo short.😂. Just my two cents.
