@@drd141 actually, smoke on the water is very complex. featuring never before seen polyrythms and intense sweep picking in the main riff alone. i think you should lisetn to the song in very close detail before you talk smack about it. the metl-your-face shredding in it is not beginner friendly, nor is any riff in that song. i think the commenter was trying to convey that the student was too good for lessons because smoke on the water is in fact the most intense guitar riff known to man

When I was learning guitar in high school, we had this hotshot kid who thought he knew everything. refused to do scales or anything theory related until the teacher basically told him to show her how it's done since he's already such a rock star. He did a couple sweeps(okayish sweeps) and the teacher responded by shredding her guitar. That day we all learned she used to be a lead guitarist for a small time metal band back in the 90s xD

Around a decade ago, I inherited my brother's cheap acoustic guitar. Got a teacher, tried to learn over a year but we never clicked and I barely learning anything. After that teacher left due to lack of students and I didn't get another one. Once the high E snapped, I just got done with guitars. Fast forward in the future, got new strings buy haven't yet clicked yet because the cheapo guitar was fighting me. In the middle of covid, took it up again, went through the pain for the 3rd time, later upgraded to a nicer electric guitar and have progressed a lot with online lessons and TABs since then.

In each hour long lesson she devoted at least a half hour to asking about my guitar, pedals, amp, picks, etc. Never mind that she literally couldn't strum a power chord yet. Within 4 lessons she had a new guitar. I figured, alright, her parents may be pushovers but at least we can get down to the lessons now...nope! She's waiting to get that Marshall amp and an overdrive pedal before she can play!

My skill right now is in "Ready to die - Andrew WK" level. The next one is the "Misirlou - Pulp Fiction (clean notes)" level, which will be followed up by the "Man with the machine gun - Nobuo Uematsu" level. Expecting to be there by the next month.

I was none of these.... I was the guy who came in with a list of songs I wanted to learn. Me and my teacher got along pretty good.... Actually come to think of it.. i was the guy who took liek 5 lessons then said "I got this on my own from now on". I didn't do them that often. Then i became a prodigy (in my head) having mastered The Basic chords then not playin guitar anymore as if I've mastered it and now I'm on to the next thing. I've always done that though..... Do a LOT of different things... get to an intermediate level... then completely quit doing it out of boredom and a sense of accomplishment enough for myself.

I was a sleeping in kind of student. I was literally sleeping 🤣 My teacher was really talented as a guitarist but I was bored of his way of teaching and for the most part he gave me lessons on blues and jazz while my way was to rock it all the way. He still managed to teach a lot to me though, I kinda regret that I didnt spent more effort to learn more from him. He was a Factory worker at that time while gambled money to be a professionalist guitarist and nowadays he's one of the best amongst my country's Jazz Professionalists. He literally made what he was aiming for. Don't be like me as a kid and be eager to learn, even if there are differences in your likes of music.

I've been playing and learning on my own for like 3 years and I'm just now starting to learn scales and shit, I've always stuck to stuff that's all power chords and octave chords, like Misfits, Green Day, Nirvana, My Chemical Romance, Decedents, Taking Back Sunday, all because it wasn't super challenging and pretty cool and rewarding to just be able to play along, it's been fun but I want to step up my game, its lame after a while to say "yeah I can play guitar sort of?" because I feel like when you say "oh yeah bro I can play guitar 😎" they expect like a sweeping guitar solo and the finger dexterity of a spider God, and then I play Teenagers From Mars by Misifits, Lithium by Nirvana, or something ya know 😂

Sided stepped the pentatonic, with making them learn all the inversions of their minor/majors/dom7/maj7/min7/9ths/maj9/min9/diminished and suspended up the neck vertically and horizontally , and heavy focus on intervals, so that when they learn the pentatonic scale and arpeggios they look at it in much deeper detail. Learning to solo two notes to three notes at a time and more up into using the full major scale patterns.

Just so you know, a lot of this applies to piano students too. (I do play guitar, entirely self-taught.) I took several years of piano and studied classical music composition in college, and today I consider myself a composer, not a performer. Anyway, before my first-ever piano lesson, I knew I wanted to play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, I just loved it so much. So I got a copy of the sheet music. I was able to figure out where all the notes are on the piano. It's pretty repetitive, and easy to play! So at my first piano lesson, I proudly played what I had taught myself over the prior week: the first page and a half of this masterpiece. My teacher said, "Very good, but... do you see those 4 sharps at the beginning of the piece? That's the key signature. It means each time you see one of those notes throughout, you have to play it sharped." In other words, I proudly played the Moonlight Sonata in C MAJOR instead of its intended key, C# minor. "Huh," I thought to myself, "so THAT'S why it sounded funny. I thought the piano was out of tune." You know, that classic telltale sign of a musician blaming not himself but his instrument. (Early starter, me.) Needless to say, when she made me switch to "Teaching Little Fingers to Play," I could no longer say "But I'm way too good for that!" (Felt it in my heart, though!)
