This can be done without NFTs for sure. NFTs just make it easier to track who actually has membership or who actually owns an asset since it's verified by a decentralized blockchain. It's a "trustless" system to make sure people own what they own. But you can make a blockbuster style membership card for your club or discord. But if the access is valuable enough, you'll get counterfeiters trying to sneak in. With NFTs you can verify who is in and who isnt.
