@@DarynRod I'm pretty sure that the USA initially got Lexx through cable or satellite on the Sci-Fi channel... not everyone can afford all the entertainment sources even today! Until I noticed the copyright date was actually three years older, I believed Lexx was a Farscape knockoff that substituted sex appeal for practical effects budget. Anyway, I enjoyed it enough to pickup the DVD boxed sets back in 2015 and remember almost including a 2008 super hero movie by mistake. 😉

Lexx is hidden gem. If you are mildly interested in some unconventional Sci-Fi watch the first season (4 x ~ 90min). Later seasons much more "normal" and had less budget to work with. Actually it was a surprise to many that there was a second/third season for such a niche show. Yo Way Yo, Home Va-Ray, Yo Ay-Rah, Jerhume Brunnen-G ...

They instill fear at the very sight of them. @@joelaton1062 No. You are objectively wrong. The NX-01 Enterprise, which is pretty fricking ugly, looks better than the Discovery ships. I could have designed those ships when I was six years old and had no artistic talent to speak of. You want good pre-Original series Trek ships? Look up Prelude to Axanar. That's 2240's tech and it still looks like proper Starfleet. The Discovery ships look like the Starfleet Corps of Engineers were collectively stoned on crack when they designed them. The only one that looks anything close to good is the remake of the Enterprise, which is by far the exception to the rule, and I will say it looks better than the JJ Abrams version.

The OPAS Behemoth looks like exactly what it is: the drum out of a washing machine. It creates gravity on the inside of the drum the same way a washing machine extracts water on the spin cycle. I would argue that it is not 'ugly' because it has an elegant simplification and practicality of design. This was enhanced when the single frippery was shed.

The Zentraedi ships aren't too bad, all things considered (though I cringe at "Robotech" rather than Macross). I do like how the movie version gave a much different feel to the Meltrandi (female Zentraedi) ships, and actually SHOWING them as separate, rather than having them work together just fine, while all the while looking all shocked "a male and a female together in the same space? Yak deculture!" But if we're going to include anime, I'd say the Paranoid ships from Gall Force were a bit uglier than the Zentraedi ships. And I'm sure we can find even uglier examples. How about the Aparoid craft from StarFox?

If it hadn't been for them, and the dubbing, I never would have discovered anime. I later learned all about Carl Macek, bought the Robotech Art books, and met him at SDCC. I love what he did, buying the US rites to three anime, and tying them together through the invention of Protoculture. Yeah, I'm that guy. Even bought the Sentinels VHS from Carl's own hand. And read all the novelizations.

1) The Olympic Class was based off an early idea for the Enterprise. 2) I once read the ship from Battle Beyond the Stars as "a pregnant Enterprise flying backwards". 3) You missed the Reavers from Serenity. Literal flying garbage should at least make 10th. 4) As should the ship from Explorers, which is something built by kids from a Tilt-A-Whirl car.

#5 should probably be called the Corman since it was used in almost all of his sci-fi flicks. For those of us that grew up on early 80s sci-fi it is iconic. It is also one of the most used ships in sci-fi having made appearances in 7 different movies and 1 game and none of the sequels or related.

I'd agree, except for interstellar travel. There's not much out there, but when one is moving at relativistic speeds, those spaced out hydrogen particles suddenly have the effective density of air and create drag. Not sure how FTL fits into all this, but the lesson here is that space is, in fact, not a vacuum.

I sort of agree with you about Serenity, its ugly but a good, functional kind of ugly. It was built to do a job, and did that job so well that people continue to fly them long after production ended. A lot of my favorite things, like the Firefly Class ships, the A-10, the C-130 and the Citroen 2CV were ugly but they were functionally ugly, they functioned well and that made them beautiful.

I'm going to say (Although it isn't 21st century) the Panzergewer 1918, a German Anti-Tank rifle from the end of World War 1. It does stand a decent chance of penetrating the armor, but even if it doesn't, the sheer force of impact would be like being hit by a truck and would cause serious harm just by sheer blunt force trauma. Going more up to date, the COD Favorite, the Barret 50cal would be similar, but I prefer the former weapon, for the old school charm and the hand tools wood finish

The Nauvoo was designed to look that way, its supposed to be ugly and look like a keg because its designed off a real-life ship design that actually works , as the spinning drum is based off a space station type known as a O'Neil cylinder, these provide full 1g gravity and can simulate day and night cycles hold massive cities and gardens etc they were meant to be like a mini earth.

The spherical medical ship from Star Trek was the original first idea concept for the Enterprise. The old sixties book called the "Making of Star Trek" shows the original designs for the Enterprise. Many of the pre-designs in the book for the Enterprise eventually became other ships in the Star Trek universe (like the Reliant, the ship stolen by Kahn in "Wrath of Khan").

I have a problem with your assessment of the Navuu. It, like the Sulaco and Nostromo, was designed with purpose. Aside from religious trapping, it was constructed for deep space travel, and it is the general shape best suited for long voyages(long and cylindrical), so to gripe about it's aesthetics is like griping that the laws of physics are the reason we get old. They are also the reason the Navuu is shaped and designed like it is. And its the Expanse.

The Nauvoo is kinda like Babylon 5. Its cylindrical shape is specifically for the purpose of its artificial gravity spin. And there is only so pretty you can make a giant space pipe lol

@@k1productions87 the cylinder also cuts down on cross section, limiting the damage potential of debris hitting the leading surface, especially during longer voyages. This is more of an advantage during higher speed flight(any decent percentage of the speed of light) where the leading cylinder face would need to be the only armored surface to protect against space pebbles and dust. "Hyperspace" doesn't exist in The Expanse, though the gates do technically represent warped space, but this design aesthetic is seen in basic ship design from the Roci to the Donnager. Babylon 5 would be a perfect design for an interstellar space craft, it's wasted as a space station. Space stations are reaching borderline obsolescence anyway, as the necessary technologies developed for them will push them to the back burner in favor of space elevators and orbital rings. Space stations are like orbital trailer parks where the tenants left the dryer on tumble too long. Like O'Neill cylinders and Dyson swarms.

Since this is a highly subjective list im just gonna add that i disagree with the choice of the reapers. I love their design and in my opinion their design is best suited for space battle as well as ground combat as the reaper themself land in worlds and can walk. No only is their design quite advanced ( i mean no race until the games could ever defeat them) but also they are made to appear after their makers...soooo its all fine by me. The rest i kinda agree, but i know from the comments there are s lot people getting triggered.
