@stephencroft16122 жыл бұрын
overrated and every game on the list looks better than it
@BriteRory2 жыл бұрын
I agree, the only game that is comparably gorgeous to behold is Red Dead Redemption 2. What those two games have above and beyond those in the list is a wide aesthetic range that maintains intricacy and coherence across its extent. The various environments in The Witcher 3 are second to none, especially those of southern Velen and Toussaint. The interior of Kaer Morhen, or the part of it that you are able to see during the opening tutorial dream sequence, is almost breathtakingly beautiful and I especially like how its splendor is contrasted with its decay in the implicit absence of proper upkeep, for instance the way the blue and white tiled walls enclosing the staircases are fading and parts of broken off. What elevates that game for me is the manner by which the artists envisioned a comprehensive "feel" for the imagery called to mind by the source material, and to see it made manifest is surreal. Every object, all of the flora and fauna, the architectural designs, the rainy weather, the clothing, etc. all of it is portrayed so well such that it feels as if you are somehow looking into another world, as if every detail of the visual landscape was conceived of and depicted by a single mind. Taken in as a whole even the music feels like it is "real" by which I mean as if it were naturally produced by the inhabitants of the games virtual locales - hopefully that makes sense? Many games have remarkable graphics, a great soundtrack, a gripping narrative, etc but it is exceedingly rare for a game to not only offer each of these aspects collectively but to be presented in such a way as to reflect a singular aesthetic vision, or an approximation of one. I only consider a very few games to have achieved this state of genius, games like the original Fallout, Red Dead Redemption 2, Morrowind, and the original Dark Souls. The Witcher 3 is undoubtedly overrated, as mentioned above, in some capacity; I do think the combat could have been more engaging and I find the leveling system atrocious (mainly for the way the preset levels determine what you can reasonably confront by imposing an absurd degree of diminishing damage output when outside of the very small appropriate level range, leading to an artificial sense of difficulty), and the potions I felt should have had a far more significant role, but ultimately the flaws are dwarfed by the overwhelming number of features and designs that are well implemented. It truly is among the very greatest games ever made, at least as far as artistic integrity. Hard to believe the same studio is responsible for Cyberpunk 2077 and all of the lies and nearly criminal acts of deception that surrounded it being marketed. I suppose it ought to be expected though, given historical precedent it is a textbook case of having fallen from grace.

I think what this list proves is how damn groundbreaking and ahead of it’s time the previous console generation was. And that with the exception of frames, the new generation hasn’t exactly been a quantum leap in the graphics department. We may have just about reached the peak of what console graphics are capable of.
@Shermannator Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't say it was ahead of its time. When they were released PCs were already capable of handling graphics like that for a longer time. It was a reasonable step and still felt smaller than the PS2/PS3 step. On the other hand, the new generation just didn't change that much then. But it's probably just the evolution of graphics. The new progress is just more subtle.
