Let's not forget Deus Ex Human Revolution outsourced it's boss design to another studio, so when you rock up to in stealth mode the boss just obliterates you with superior firepower it was so bad they reworked the bosses in the directors cut so you could tackle them with stealth instead....

The bosses in Ori and the Will of the Wisps were awesome! Really hope to see Ori return in the near future.
@kyleolson89776 ай бұрын
I don't get this entry. It's like he's got it backwards. The first Ori's one major flaw was the escape sequences, and these complaints about the boss battles here is all of what the escape sequences had. They were absurd difficulty spikes, skill checks, and in many sections you literally could not make one mistake. The second game had tough bosses, but I did not feel constantly ripped off. Further, when you get stuck on a boss fight there is some chance to quit and find more power-ups or do something similar. On an escape sequence you are stuck and can do nothing in the game until you beat it. Additionally, the lack of bosses in the first game created an odd flow. I like both games, but the second game's structure is much better.

I actually like the boss fights in MGSV phantom pain. Granted, the skulls were just bullet sponges, and nothing more in a full-blown battle. The stealth skulls were like fighting four versions of quiet. The man on fire was unique, because no amount of fire power took him down, and you had to figure out an alternate way to beat him. If you took too long, the game just sent the chopper or started raining to end the fight for you.
@duhmzdaih6 ай бұрын
They are not bad, but they are completely inferior to the boss fights of the previous games.
@sadowolf6 ай бұрын
It's more that they're really not up to the usual MGS standard. They were mostly pretty dull and uninventive compared to their predecessors. The Man on Fire fight was probably the closest to a good MGS boss battle, with several ways to complete the fight, my personal favorite being to lure him to the edge of the cliff at the end of the area, then run him off the cliff in a jeep, bailing before it goes off the edge into the river below.

I doubt Kojima had much to do with the design of the boss fights in a lot of his games. Kojima is the story writer and art style design guy. There's hundreds of other people working on every aspect of a game. My guess would be he had someone at Konami who designed all those great Metal Gear boss fights. By the time MGSV was in development, that person was no longer there which would explain the huge drop in quality. I don't know if the same guy who developed the MGSV boss fights also developed the Death Stranding fights or if it was someone new, but either way, Kojima still hasn't found anyone who's up to the level of the guy (or multiple people) who did all those other Metal Gear games.

First games that immediately came to mind were Metal Gear Solid V (so disappointing from a franchise known for interesting boss fights) and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which I'm surprised didn't make the list. I guess they didn't ruin the game (few on the list did), but in a game that focuses on player choices and having the option to complete tasks in a multitude of ways, locking you in areas for showdowns against bullet spongey bosses just didn't make sense. Of course as is widely known by now, they outsourced the boss fights to another developer. As for some of the others, Death Stranding's bosses felt out of place in a similar way that Deus Ex's did, the Hand of Sauron is the only boss battle I actually remember from Shadow of Mordor, which speaks to how bad it was (I don't remember thinking the others were particularly bad), and I watched a friend play Quantum Break, and that BS final boss fight coupled with the fact that he had to continuously watch the cutscene every time he died caused him to quit the game altogether haha.

Axiom Verge probably would have been a far, FAR better game if the freaking teleport/dash ability was assigned to a single button instead of having to double-tap the direction you want to move in. The amount of damage I took in that game due simply to the game not registering a double-tap to dodge is absolutely staggering. Another game that, like Axiom Verge, is rather breathtaking, but features nasty bosses, is Death's Gambit. This goes doubly so for the fact that in order to finish the game, you have to beat all the bosses again on the special "challenge" difficulty. Given how murderously brutal some of the later bosses are just in normal mode, they're the reason I didn't finish the game. The point about Halo 5's bosses being tedious bullet sponges reminded me immediately of the Marauder in Doom Eternal. Fighting him that first time was one thing, but even after that first fight, I never wanted to fight him again. Imagine my rage and anguish every time I'd encounter him from then on out. Also, while Spiritfarer has no boss fights, trying to fish for tuna will definitely leave you with similar feelings of rage and frustration.

No one said difficult bosses were all bad, but bosses that are both punishing and mechanically uninteresting? That IS bad. That seems to be the main complaint here - there's not a ton of mechanical variety or depth, just punishment. If anything this illustrates the difference between punishment and challenge perfectly. Something can lack challenge and be punishing, or vice versa. Like, Malenia is incredibly challenging but minimally punishing; you can literally just respawn outside the door and try again without even a boss run, but she's also the hardest boss in Elden Ring and brutally difficult.

In Persona 5 Royal, the Okumura boss battle is so frustrating that I have not replayed Royal to this day because I don’t want fight against that boss . Anyone who’s played P5R knows exactly what I’m talking about.
