Funny thing about TV shows being out of order. We ran across the same thing with British shows here in the US. When I was a teenager, or local Public Broadcasting System station ran episode of Doctor Who (primarily because they were cheap-it was really a niche show in America, so the BBC didn't charge much. The only problem was that they did serials at the time, and the station would air them out of order. So some guy who died on the show last week was suddenly alive this week.

Well do I remember how irritating it was to know that you were always at least a Dr. behind what people were watching in The Kingdom That Must Not Be Named. Somewhat more like Diane's RTE experience, the cheapest, lowest-power UHF channels here in the Upper Midwest often seemed to buy just one 8 episode pack from the distributor. And always the bottom of the barrel -- "F Troop" and dubious pabulum like that. By contrast, or because of that, there was enough flexibility in the system to allow something like MST3K to flourish as a local show for a couple of years in a low-stakes environment and perfect their craft. But mostly it was crap.
@almostfm Жыл бұрын
@@nielsstrandskov6705 "the cheapest, lowest-power UHF" It's funny-when I was little, we had access to the three network affiliates and got PBS and a non-affiliate station in the same year, which was struggling for cash (if you've ever seen SCTV, it was almost that bad). To just fill the airwaves, they'd put on anything. During one reporting period, they actually won the weekend morning timeslot. On Sundays, they'd run a show called "The Voice of Tokyo", which was a several hour long program-there was a talk show segment, several comedians, some singing and dancing, but the highlight was that they'd show either a Kung Fu or Godzilla (or other giant monster) movie. They _owned_ the 8-12 boy demographic, despite the show being entirely in Japanese.

Hi Diane, Happy Friday! The self- diagnosis bit reminds me of first semester of abnormal psychology in college. Many of my classmates (and me too) started diagnosing our selves (and others) with a long list of serious mental illnesses. I guess people are just wired that way. One good thing the internet and international social media has done is help acquaint people with the day to day differences/ similarities we share. I really enjoyed this video. I appreciate what you said it and about people now popularizing mental health diagnosis. While I think awareness is awesome, and acceptance is desperately needed. We have to make sure that we’re not minimizing the severity of what people are really going through. I constantly see comments on social media now to where someone says I wish I was OCD so I can get my house cleaned. Which really diminishes the severe life altering effects it can cause for someone suffering with that disorder. It’s like a double edge sword the more people hear about it the more they seem to misunderstand it, or make light of it. Maybe that’s just my perspective. I apologize I went way off topic.

I actually met a few Irish women at the university I study at in Leinster, Ireland. They knocked on my door, drinks in hand, asking if I wanted to join them for a night out. I said yes and entered the room they were staying in where they had on kinda loud American music on. One girl was literally grinding on me as I tried to play to the song on my guitar. When I ask a question about where they were from, the same girl immediately made fun of my American accent and said "I like English accents better." Then we went to the pub and instead of sitting down at a table downstairs for a drink and the chats, they wanted to go upstairs to a nightclub. I was thinking to myself the whole time "Christ, these girls are more American than I am, and they don't even realize it." Globalization.

Glad you are having a great Friday. I find your list of top 10 things Europe has adopted very interesting. The last one about mental health, and I am not sure if Ireland or Spain, not sure where you were during the "Plague", but here in the US, depending on what state you lived in, serious mental health issues began to sprout up among many children due to the required masking and school closures. Again, this depended on which state you lived in. I live in Florida, and as much as the media tried to demonize us, our Governor made really smart decisions, and economically and our kids in schools are doing pretty well. The thing about the masking, especially among the very young, was it caused some learning disabilities. Babies who are hearing what the mother or father are saying, cannot see the lips moving. That inhibits a babies ability to learn to speak properly. In many states, families were pretty much required to stay home, not visit family members, weddings, funerals, sick relatives and so on. Again, that depended on which state you lived in. Again Florida here so we were and are good.

Hi Diane, here in Australia, we certainly think toward America. When there is an election in the USA, many people march through the major cities with signs on which American candidate for which to "vote". We don't even do that for Australian elections!!! We have a lot of smart phones here as well. Working from home has increased here, especially since our COVID lock downs. Many cities here in Australia have received visits from American experts to get advice on our public transport. They have attempted to push Halloween here, though the door to door trick or treats has never taken off so far. We tried Starbucks, but only a small number of places have appeared. I think there may be more competition here with coffee. I think the Gold Coast in Queensland seems to be Americanized. Surfers Paradise looks quite a bit like Miami from photos these days. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

Surprisingly enough, they showed up at a tiny Club where we used to dance to Latin music! Turns out they had asked someone working in housekeeping in the hotel what was a good place to go to, and the person not being from the US recommended that place. It was a small club that only about 200 people or 300 people would fit in at once, so it would have been a place where you would not have missed seeing them and meeting them

In 1783, the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution with Britain, it's clearly enumerated that each of the states was a free, sovereign, independent country. In 1787, the US Constitution began being drafted, and it was ratified in 1789. The primary impetus for the formation of a federal government was to facilitate trade- not only between the states, but with foreign nations as well. Other countries were more willing to negotiate a single trade deal, rather than need to do so for thirteen separate american countries. ...any of this sounding familiar to any EU members?

On the issue of Europe now getting TV shows and whatnot at the same time as the US, I remember when there was a bit less of a flow from one to another. Since in the 80s and 90s I was occasionally overseas for a year or two at a time, there are a few gaps in my knowledge of US pop culture. Somebody will mention a TV show, movie, or hit song, and I draw a blank because I happened to be in Europe or Asia at the time it was popular and it missed me entirely. Basically, I got a portion on local TV and radio (and Armed Forces TV), but not everything. There is a tradeoff, though. During those times I became a fan of some things that never made it over to the States, like the UK TV show the Crystal Maze (which oddly enough I saw on a Hong Kong cable channel that was carried in South Korea). By the way, your "therapy" American accent sounds specifically like a Minnesota accent.

The discounts normally on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, reflect some what close to the actual price to manufacture. The retail price is set to cover the manufacturer, transportation and the store. The store can drop a price, cutting into its profit trying to clear old goods for new. Black Friday and Cyber Monday drop prices, because there is some what a guarantee that every item is going to be sold on that day from every store across the planet. Meaning the store can cover it's loss from individual sales by wiping out it's stock of most wanted items, from every store it owns in that 24 hour period. Then next stock is already prepped for delivery, for normal price the following day. The incentive between clearance and the 2 holidays, is different. The thing is though, because most stores operate online, you can easily look up stores and see if it is clearing stock for a discount.

Releasing music, movies, and TV at the same time in the US and Europe was a business decision forced by piracy. There was no point in staggering release dates because waiting too long meant the media was already being widely pirated and sold online. This still happens in China because of the strict censorship regime. A film might be released in the US and Europe, someone videotapes the performance or snags an online copy, and it's released within hours on pirated media in China. Meanwhile, it takes months to years for the official censorship regime to approve or disapprove an official release, by which time anyone that wants to see or hear it has already had plenty of opportunities without ever paying the content creators.

i think your perspective is narrow: the nordic countries, especially germans have LONG celebrated christmas with certain rituals, although more modest. the italians practically INVENTED coffee culture. fun fact: this arose after the tea party where americans revolted against britain taxing our tea so we threw it into boston harbor, and started drinking coffee instead. i could go on, but there was a seed of most all of this in europe, because americans were, at the beginning, a mixture of europeans. now we're a mix of everything, and it's glorious! that's why we have the best food, cultural traditions, etc. the marketplace of ideas selects the best of all of them.

I remember vacations to Ireland as a kid and seeing movie ads for films that had been realesed here in Canada months before... Mind you this was waaaaay before the internet so I suppose you guys just had to wait for the movie to be flown over to the cinemas!! Side note... Both my parents were born in Dublin (Mum in Phibsoro, and Da in Churchtown) so we were there for two weeks most summers back inthe 70's and 80's...

I'm going to guess that the reason for that was the price of film prints. By waiting for the US prints to be returned so they could send them overseas they could shave expense. Now with digital cinemas this is no longer an issue.

I think you have swallowed all 50 states, Gen Zee indeed, when it should be Gen Zed. I can't comment on RTÉ showing series episodes out of sequence as I was not in Ireland until '97 but it was never done by the BBC or ITV companies in the UK. Although few American TV series were shown apart from the big ones like 'Dallas', 'Columbo', anything with Burt Reynolds or the Police one with Telly Savalas in, forgot the name. Back in the '50's and '60's also had 'I Love Lucy' and 'Rawhide' which made Clint Eastwood's successful career.

Some people think prison is one word, but to robbers, it's the whole sentence.
