The main issue I have with baseball culture is the selective outrage in cheating. I personally see ball doctoring to the same way I see steroids, and yet one is clearly seen as worse than the other. It’s one thing to view Barry Bonds as cheating for taking steroid (although he already had a HOF career before he started juicing), but Gaylord Perry bragged about cheating and gets in the hall of fame. It feels like a double standard. Also, I don’t think the Astros did anything that wrong. Maybe worthy of a fine and a “don’t do this again.” But I don’t think sign stealing is or should be that big of a deal. And to be honest, it feels the Astros scandal was only a big deal because of Yankees fans copium. I get thst it is an unfair advantage, but I find messing with the field of play and A/C to be much worse cheating than sign stealing. Well that’s a but of a rant. Feel free to discredit me because I’m a stinky Mets fan below.

As a Yankees fan, I completely agree with everything you said. Idk why the fanbase gasses up that 2017 run so much we were not that good lol.
@matthewdigiacomo2580Ай бұрын
Interestingly enough Perry was only thrown out of a game once for throwing the spitter, and he got caught twice in that game. It should also be noted that there is no real evidence that Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens even took steroids (though I think most people believe they did). Another person who SHOULD be in is Shoeless Joe Jackson. He hit .375 with the only home run and did not make an error. Apparently, there were people who decided he did not get to some balls he normally got to. But really ... how do you just decide which balls he should have caught and which ones he shouldn't have. As for the Astros ... I find Dodgers fans complain more than anyone because they lost to the Astros in the World Series. I also find it funny that those same Dodgers fans somehow forget they lost the following year to the Red Sox, who also got in trouble for the same exact sign stealing scandal, though ran a bit differently. Just another example of selective outrage.

I concur with all that's been said. I've been waiting for someone to write a book about baseball's C.I.A. Cheating. Integrity. Asterisks. Sure, there were a lot of hitters doing vitamin S in the '90s, but pitchers were getting strikes called six inches off the plate. So that kind of evens things out. No rules were harmed in the making of this paragraph. Integrity. Anyone remember how the Giant's ground crew would change things up depending on who was playing? Maybe make sure the base paths are a little slow when playing faster teams that like to run. Or leave the infield grass a bit longer depending on who's pitching. But that's just "gamesmenship"... right? As for asterisks, just about every record should have one. Because unlike other sports, there no "regular" field size. Imagine if Willie Mays played his career at Wrigley Field instead of the Polo grounds and Candlestick? He would probably have had 850-900 homeruns. How are the numbers held so sacred by so many even though they cover different ballparks in different eras. Dead ball. Live ball. Different hight pitcher's mound. There's been very little consistency throughout the history of the game. So to all the people who get really worked up about the numbers and cheating, relax... it's only a game. 😉

As a Tigers fan growing up, Dan Dickerson regularly stated that the Twins would turn on the AC when they were at bat in the Metrodome. I'm surprised it never got talked about that much.

I gave heard that also but as an engineer that worked on that system I can tell you it was capable but would have very little effect. To change the velocity it would take several minutes. That much air will not see an increase in speed. Additionally the system could not change airflow direction at all.

I think the first rule you discuss is in place in case a player goes back at heckling fans. Yes signing autographs is absolutely OK but it’s there in case a player starts cursing at a fan or what not.

@williamavitt8264Ай бұрын
That's no different than the Galaraga perfect game fiasco. Yes, the hitter was a dick for doing that, but ultimately it was the fault of the umpire for missing the call. Ump should have made him continue the at-bat

Tucapita Marcano got banned for life while unable to play recovering from injury simply because he bet on his team. Did he really have a duty to person while he's on IR? Pretty stupid how that's a lifetime ban.
@SconnerStudiosАй бұрын
Definitely a stupid rule when applied as zero tolerance. Lifetime bans for anyone who bets on their team to lose, sure. But betting on yourself winning? Unless you're conspiring with someone else who's throwing a game, I personally have zero problem with it. And betting on other teams you aren't a part of? That shouldn't even be a rule, especially when these sports betting companies are in bed with the sports leagues themselves.

For ball doctoring, I was hoping you'd show the clip of Twins pitcher Joe Niekro getting inspected in Anaheim in late 1987, and the nail file flying out of his pocket. It was hilarious! My got suspended for that, and got on Letterman because of the incident.
@williamavitt8264Ай бұрын
I see leaning into a pitch like this: we routinely see umpires making hitters continue the at-bat for leaning in or simply not making a clear effort to avoid it. So if you intentionally lean into the pitch, you take the risk that you might get hit and have to still hit. So to me, it's the same as any other missed call. If the hitter illicitly gets awarded first base after leaning into a pitch, that's on the ump, not the hitter

I hate that they blame steroids for that era like they did that to take attention away from the fact they were juicing the balls
@felixorozco6514Ай бұрын
Steroids.......you still have to hit the ball. Bonds, McGwire both had a good eye for the ball?
@jeremynitta1449Ай бұрын
Totally agree. Without steroids Bonds is still probably close to a 500 HR hitter, maybe more like high 400s with gold gloves? He’s still a lock HOF. But you juice up an average human and it’s not like they’ll magically be able to hit 400 foot homers
@matthewdigiacomo2580Ай бұрын
I agree about Bonds, but McGwire may never have reached the 500 club. Before he started taking steroids, he was so injury prone that he only hit 277 homers in his first 10 seasons. Then with the steroids, which helped him stay healthy more than anything else, he hit 306 over his final six seasons. So who knows with Big Mac???

The juice is all about being able to bulk up like a maniac through weight training and not having to pay the recovery time price. If done under a doctor’s supervision, it should be as safe as taking an aspirin. Ballplayers have been using anything they can find to get an advantage for the entire history of the game. Apply the rule, punish the players accordingly, and move on. BBWAA (the gatekeepers to the HOF) are so pissed at themselves for encouraging the juicing in the 70s, 80s, & 90s that they decided to take it out on the players. I’m glad they got over it and started voting juicers into the HOF.

Seems that the level of outrage is inversely proportional to how enforceable the rule is by umpires at the moment. Things like leaning into a pitch, throwing at a batter, or the takeout slide can easily be enforced, but often aren't, so many fans aren't even aware that the rule exists. On the other hand, things like PED use and electronic sign stealing require extensive investigations to catch, so nobody is aware at the moment that it's going on, so when it is exposed, fans feel duped.

One rule change I would like to see is... No occupant of a bullpen may not enter the field of play at any time except to enter the game. This includes during skirmishes and if the benches empty during a basebrawl.
@SconnerStudiosАй бұрын
They should revise the HBP rule to make hitting a batter an automatic trip to second base instead of first. Manfred wants to make more RISP? Do that instead, get rid of the stupid ghost runner! Ivan Rodgriguez is the only confirmed roider though. Ortiz could be one of the number of false positives in the report (supposedly around 10% of the players listed were false positives), and Bagwell and Piazza both never had anything other than rumors. Jose Canseco said he personally injected Pudge, so as far as I'm concerned, he's the only HOF we know for a fact.
@rslitmanАй бұрын
I like the HBP to 2nd base idea. This would, I assume, move any runner on 1st to 3rd, and any runners on 2nd OR 3rd to home.
@matthewdigiacomo2580Ай бұрын
Accidents happen. Now, if you can prove with 100% certainty that the pitcher hit the batter on purpose, maybe. But to just give someone second base for an errant pitch ... Then you might as well call a batter automatically out if he loses his grip on the bat and it leaves his hand. As for Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, he was not a confirmed steroid user. He NEVER tested positive (and he would have been tested his final five seasons) and NEVER admitted to using (as Alex Rodriguez did). And I am absolutely not going to take the word of a bankrupt player (both financially and morally) looking to gain money anyway he can.
