Usually there is supermarket or grocery store in walking distance or very nearby. So there is no need to buy in bulk. You can just quickly run to the store if you want something or forgot something. In America you need to drive like half an hour to the closest Costco or Target to get your groceries. So I think that's why you buy in bulk and we don't.

Half a hour is crazy 😂 . They would just get it delivered lol. The average drive is 8 to 10 mins.

The Dutch eat tons of sandwiches, hence all the spreads. Bread is almost religious, it must be fresh. Every European country has it’s own bread, Dutch bread is very light and fluffy, German bread is denser and heavier for instance. All a matter of preference. The herring is not raw, it’s brined and salted, but most prefer it fresh from the market or fish store, where they prepare it while you wait.

We take the bike or walk because, almost everywhere, there are 3 grocery stores within 5-10 mins walking. This way you don't need to buy in bulk and always can have fresh food. This is also because in the EU food has way less artificial preservatives in them and they don't last that long. For instance bread, it's freshly baked (€2 for loaf of what American call "artisan" bread) and there is no sugar in it. Americans toast their bread, here we think toasting ruins the bread, we only do it with old stale bread. What we also have a lot is bread that is pre-baked, it is in plastic, it stays good for weeks, and you bake it at home, so you have freshly baked warm bread whenever you like. Yeah we eat a lot of bread, breakfast is bread, lunch is also bread. But it's all high quality very tasty bread and it's cheap.

3 grocery stores within 5-10 minutes walking is a low number for a Dutch city. I can get to five grocery stores in under five minutes, as well as two bakeries, a butcher and a fish place.

Personally, I walk to my local grocery store. Or a couple of them. On a daily basis. I like my food as fresh as possible.

It's the same in South Africa, that's how our bread or baked goods sections look late in the day especially in gas stations and fresh batches or bulks of bread are delivered to grocery stores and supermarkets every morning. And also those grocery stores and supermarket puts out their own fresh baked unsliced bread as well.

I actually do my daily shopping by bike every day, 7 days a week. Often with my grandson in front in the child seat of my bike. I discuss who is eating at home and adjust my shopping accordingly. Fresh bread every day! The supermarket is also only 800 meters from our house and you can cycle there quietly and safely. On the way you meet someone you know and you have a chat. Just nice and relaxed :-) Whether it is raining or snowing or it is boiling hot. I always cycle. My grandson always starts laughing when it rains. Rain gear on and off we go.

14:45 well, personally speaking as a wheelchair user, there are things I buy in bulk bc of price. That is for washing powder, deodorant etc. But food? No, I don’t buy in bulk. I live 10 minutes rolling from 3 stores next to each other and there I get my groceries after work a few times a week. I put them in my backpack and go home. But all stores do deliver as well. We even have a store that only delivers and has no stores. But those are not cheap. About expired material. I am not 100% sure, but a store can get closed by authorities if they sell expired food. Food that have expiration dates of that day are usually sold 35 to 50% off (dependant on the store). If food is expired, it goes in the trash. Sometimes it goes to a food bank for people who do not have enough money for food. Also expiration dates are not written on stickers, they are printed directly onto the packaging so there is no possibility to cheat there

Yep, we are taking the bike to do shopping. In every neighborhood in the Neterlands there are ususally several grocerystores within walking or biking distance. In my case there are 4 supermarkets less than half a mile away. And another two within a distance of a mile. There is no need to buy in bulk. I can just hop on my bike and pop over to buy some stuff for my breakfast that morning and be back within 5-10 minutes. No big stroads with lots of stinking cars. Lots of greens in the streets, so I can enjoy my quick bike ride. Not only supermarkets are nearby, most of the smaller stores are too. I don't even have a car. Why would I need it?

Oh we can load a lot of stuff on our bikes. The salads we mostly eat on crackers or on (slices of) baguettes. Not so much on sandwiches, because your bread would go too soggy, since we prefer to eat really fresh and soft bread.

I work in a Dutch supermarket and I see many customers visit on a daily basis. When products are approaching their expiration date they are discounted. For instance a full loaf of bread baked yesterday will cost 50 Euro cents (54 cents USD at this moment). Also a lot of people come to get a quick lunch. Our store is quite popular with the local police force for that. 😂

In the center of my hometown there are trash can everywhere. There are people, who don't care about that 15 cents. On these trash can there are racks in which you can place your can. Then a homeless person can take that can, go with it to the grocery store and earn a little money. Around my home there are 4 grocery stores within a 0,6 mile radius. I buy what I need that day and walk (8 minutes) to the grocery store. Since these 4 grocery stores aren't all at the same location, but at various locations I can go to the grocery store that is the nearest on my way home. Of course, by bike.

I live a 2 minute bike ride away from the nearest grocery store. I also ride my bike to and from work every day (about a 30 minute bike ride), which has me passing literally in front of... I think 5 grocery stores, with at least two more less that are maybe a one minute detour. So, yeah, I do my grocery shopping by bike, on the daily.

I think a lot of Dutch people have found out that orange juice is just not that healthy, so I think that's why the machine isn't used as much compared to when it was first introduced. The small number of times I do drink orange juice, I definitely use the machine over prepacked orange juice. It's nice to know that there is ONLY oranges in your drink 😊

Something they didn't show is that most grocery stores (supermarkets) also deliver. They all have apps you can order and there's one that even doesn't have physical stores. Once or twice a week I have all my groceries delivered to the house (I work from home, so it's really convenient to me, but they also deliver evenings).

I live in a town were parking is free and driving easy, i don't like doing groceries every day, so on average once a week i do groceries by car at the local supermarkets. Once a month i drive to a big supermarket in Germany (less than 15 minutes drive) to buy bulk. Many things are cheaper in Germany, like bread, milk, soft drinks, chocolate, most alcoholic drinks, meat, vitamines, shampoo, soap, gasoline, etcetera. If i have to go for just a few things i go by bike or moped scooter.

live about 5 minutes walk from a grocery shop / supermarket (aldi)...bit furter away like 20 minutes walk or few minutes with bicycle or car got 3 different grocery stores in a small shopping mall...and we have a few Turkey and Polisch grocery shops, also within walking distance. So no need to buy in bulk. And here the most are open from 8am till 8pm execpt albert hein(AH) open til 10pm (22:00h in eu time)..so forget something, you can get it quickly..except the bread, when it's gone, you have to wait till next day for the new fresh bread...bread in eu has NO long live shelf time like the chemical bread in the usa (if you can call it bread, it's even illegal to import us bread to the eu)

In bulk buying is not a common thing here. I guess it's personal too. I myself love to have copious amounts of long shelf life items stored in my pantry. But the store is like a 5 minute walk away, if that, so there's no need to buy huge amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables.

There are no weird things in the Netherlands. They are common here. What is weird, is the American perception though, thinking that the rest of the world is modeled after their mediocre society that in reality is nothing more than a copy and paste from European culture.

Pro & Cons of glass vs. cans Glass - Pros- looks nicer - can see what you are ACTUALLY getting (& how much, visually) - no worry about metal seepage into the food inside Cons - can degenerate faster as the light is getting into the foods - can get damaged/break easier on the way to the store or being put onto shelves at the store (or at home) or being looked at by a grocer (or a child) - this can lead to more clean-ups at home or the store & risk of harm from broken glass until then - likely? more expensive to buy Metal can - Pros - no worry about broken glass - the light does not seep in to deteriorate the product - may? be cheaper than glass Cons - not as attractive - can't see what the actual product inside looks like ie. poor quality, type of cut, young vs. older vegetables - can have metal seepage into the liquid holding the vegetables etc. when the can ages (ESP. if holding an acidic item ie. anything with tomatoes/tomato sauce) OR if the metal not properly sealed inside with its plastic coating

The Dutch eat a lot of sandwiches, but they're really basic. A Dutch cheese sandwich is generally just bread and cheese, nothing else. Basic Dutch bread and cheese is a lot more flavorful than basis American bread and cheese, but still, I like to have some pickles and mustard on it. Most Dutch people don't. One Dutch sandwich that I think should be more popular is peanut butter and sambal.
