As a wine lover now venturing into the world of whisk(e)y, I was very pleased by your presentation and information. The relationship between wines and barrel finishes is a fascinating topic to me. Thanks, Erik!

Like you I started with Wine and expanded out to Whiskey. Although these days I focus more on Whiskey, I still will usually get a new bottle of Wine when I go look for new Whiskies,

You are truly an educated man. I always enjoy your videos. Personally I’m a red wine or a Pinot man and Lambrusco and Cabrinet and....etc.......lol. Many come to Kentucky for bourbon and overlook the local wineries.

Wow, need to check my notifications. Got notified a day late. Great video Erik. One of the most frustrating things I find within the whiskey community is a lot of people have a hesitation to explore wine or they look down upon the wine industry and wine drinkers in general, especially men. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen somebody comment in either the whiskey tribe or another whiskey group where they mentioned that they are the whiskey drinker but they buy bottles of wine to keep their "wife happy". My first love is wine with whiskey close second. I really have made it a mission to expose a lot of my friends who drink whiskey to explore wines. It is not uncommon for me to have a glass of wine and whiskey in the same evening, depending on the time and circumstance. Thanks again for this content.

Erik, this was one amazing presentation. Congratulations. Thank you! Thank you as well for the special comment about the Green Spot-Cabernet. Just one small addition to your excellent presentation: Glendronach has a 12 year PX cask worth mentioning.

Erik, there's also Portuguese Moscatel, which is fortified. Glenriach uses it in one of their bottles, I believe. Pro tip: 'lh' in Portuguese is pronounced like the Italian 'gl', not in the Spanish way. Good exposé on the wines, really enjoyed it.

Moscatel is produced all over the world including the USA and South America.

You can get well priced PX, though I agree it’s worth spending more, but that bad boy you had is an oooold one. Liquid gold. Also, Los Arcos Lustau is a belter price-to-quality amontillado.

I've been waiting for you to make a presentation like this and when I saw the notification I couldn't click fast enough. So much great information packed into a clear and succinct video. I greatly appreciate all the examples given for each of the vines discussed. I didn't know Arran and Teeling made Amarone finished whisky but I'm sure gonna track some down now. This made my day. Thank you Erik!

Excellent video, very informative. I would be interested to know your take on the Edradour 12 Caledonia, which I believe is exclusively matured in oloroso butts. Beautiful, old style whisky which I had the privilege right at the distillery which is renowned for being the "smallest distillery in Scotland"! I prefer savory tasting whiskys and this is an important video because so many distilleries are increasingly using wine cask maturations creating "sherry bombs" and other gimmicks which greatly detract the flavor of the whisky. Another whisky of note would be the Longrow 18, aged in chilean cab sauv casks. Delicious! I loved that fact that you included Irish and world whiskeys in the mix here. Thank you for this extremely relevant and informative presentation!

Great video Erik. Very comprehensive presentation in a short amout of time. I have a Glen Moray warehouse 1 UK release that am really looking forward to opening for my birthday in September. 14 year full maturation from 5 Sauternes casks 59.6% ncf nc. Cheers

I like my wine sweet, so my top are ofc Pedro Ximenez and Sauternes. Closely followed by Tokaji Aszu and Ice Wine finishes, which unfortunately are next to impossible to find anywhere. But more importantly the whiskey must be done right in order to enjoy the wine cask finish. For example Glenmorangie Nectar D'or was kinda disappointing, too rough and most of the flavor was cancelled out by burn. While Octomore 10.1 with the same Sauternes cask finish was just incredible.

More to come! I am currently editing video for my upcoming series on Sherry & Sherry Cask Whiskies in which I'll talk about and review different types of sherries (Fino, Oloroso, Amontillado, Palo Cortado, PX) and then review whiskies aged in those casks. I will be THE most in-depth series I have ever done on whisky and the most thorough videos on the subject available on KZbin.

Awesome video Erik. I learned more about wine and wine finished whisky in 17 minutes than I’ve managed to accumulate in the neatly 3 years I’ve been into whiskey now. I feel like I can go back and use this a reference for some of the wine cask finished scotches that I like. Hell I may even pick up a bottle or two of the wine you’d covered. Some of them sound really nice. Great job. Thanks!

Boy, that PX looks like 10w40! Picked up a bottle of Oloroso to try because I love the Uigeadail so much. Do you have to drink the wine shortly after opening? Thought I saw something that it should be had within a few weeks of opening. Also waiting for that Loch Gorm to show up locallly...Thanks again - great content.

Hmm, there was no Rioja in your list, that is good, I hope the prices drop if others forget about that^^. I would have a hard time, if I ever needed to choose between Tempranillo or whisky^^ Great content, please more joint ventures of wine and whisky.

I LOVE Rioja and Ribera Del Duero but the caks are RARELY used for whisky6, though I have seen a few "Spanish Red wine" cask aged whiskies. But there were not specific about the region of Spain.

According to port / madeira wine makers - bottle can be open up to one year (with exception of vintage port). I never tested it myself (never had a reason to buy a bottle). There is a long controversy about sherry/ px casks - casks are mostly seasoned with very young wines. Is the same done also with madeira/ port casks?

Very nice video! Thank you! Just for clarification, is everything from Marsala onward a fortified wine?
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies3 жыл бұрын
Marsala is a fortified wine from the town of Marsala in Sicily. But there are other non-fortified wines from the region of Sicily Italy. Try a Nero d"Avala.

What flavors would I find in a barolo cask. I'm basking because there is an Edradour I am thinking of. Thanks
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies3 жыл бұрын
Barolo is made from Nebbiolo which is similar to Pinot Noir in aroma and flavor but is MUCH more tannic.
