Good morrow sir! Cooking up in my prefrontal cortex is a comparison between Tissue and The Emigrée if the Emigrée comes up, however you've advised against it due to the lack of form and structure between the two. As you only need to mention a couple of elements from form and structure for top grades, I was wondering whether elements like the Emigrée being a biographical narrative, or Tissue's structure being deliberately like a Holy Book would be enough? And even then, would a paragraph on how they a similar for their respective lack of from/structure work?

Dear Mr Salles, I have finally written all that I could in 45 minutes for my Inspector Calls essay. Let's do the comparison! Question: How does Priestley present Sheila as a character who learns important lessons about herself and society? Write about: · Some of the things Sheila learns in the play · How Priestley presents Sheila as a character who learns important lessons about herself and society My answer: At the start of Act 1, Priestley presents Sheila as a vapid and immature character who finds happiness in inconsequential matters. This is reinforced when she exclaims "Oh - it’s wonderful! Look - Mummy - isn’t it a beauty?" as she proudly shows off the engagement ring from Gerald. The noun "Mummy" exhibits her sense of approval that she requires in order to make important decisions or feelings about herself when she is unsure. Furthermore, the word "Mummy" has connotations of someone who nurtures or requires a parent as they need looking after. This further suggests that Sheila is quite child-like. She is not taken as seriously as the men around her and Priestley deliberately emphasises this immaturity to highlight a woman's position as a second class citizen in the Edwardian Era. During the Edwardian Era, society was patriarchal and women were expected to remain meek, subservient and polite. She was provided for by her father as a "business deal" rather than an "engagement" which emphasises how misogynistic society was at the time. As Act 1 progresses, we see Sheila possessing a sense of maturity when she acknowledges her guilt “I know I’m to blame - and I feel desperately sorry”. This is juxtaposed with her child-like behaviour as Priestley explicitly notifies us here that she is the polar opposite of who she was at the start of Act 1. This links to the contextual idea of her standing up to herself just like women did during the suffragettes movement. Thus, Sheila is subverting the expectations of that time period and is instead taking ownership and standing up for herself, further developing from her initially immature stance. After the inspector’s interrogation, Sheila begins to change as a character. Her words to Gerald of “you fool he knows” demonstrates a dramatic shift in her personality. This exclamation shows that Sheila has quickly realised that Goole is shrewd and smart. Although she describes herself as “getting hysterical” in Act 2 when Gerald attempts to remove her from the room, Sheila has transformed from a girl who was cooing over her ring to someone who has shown a great deal of emotional maturity as she coolly returns the ring to Gerald and tells him “You and I aren’t the same people who sat down to dinner here”. This quote shows how she can no longer ignore the injustices in society. This is further reinforced when she tells Mrs Birling that “we really must stop these silly pretences''. Sheila is quick to follow the inspector’s lead and hold her family accountable for their crimes and flaws. It seems she wants to make up for what she has done. The reference to their “silly pretences'' shows how she wants to escape the protective bubble of her privilege and face reality. Through her words, Priestley conveys her as the mature voice of reason and as a mouthpiece of Priestley's belief that the upper-classes need to care less about their societal appearances but more about the consequences of their actions. Therefore, we see how Sheila gradually becomes a perceptive character that is trying to preach the inspector’s socialist ideas. What mark would a senior examiner give this?
