The Norwegian decision to evacuate by helicopter was so smart, I’ve been on some serious seas, I’ve lived by dangerous coasts and watched ships unable to get into harbour. A giant ship had waves going over the top of the ship. We couldn’t have survived in a lifeboat. We couldn’t have survived on the deck. The sea needs respecting.

I was on the Carnival Ecstasy in April 2010 when there was a sudden and sharp turn leading to a terrible list - in the middle of the Gulf. If you Google it, you’ll see the controversies over exactly what happened and the extent to which the incident occurred. I too saw two what appeared to be islands or sandbars directly in our path on the radar. It was the most clear and calm day. Imagine the terror when, on one of the top decks, out of nowhere there was a sudden turn then severe list that emptied the buffet settings, chairs and dishwater and food and personal belongings all slid down to port side. I was on the side that was riding up and I remember grabbing the rails and praying out loud. I truly did see my life flash before my eyes. I even thought about whether or not to jump bc I know that if it went down, the ship could suck you down with it. Carnival played it off to the media as if it were no big deal, those of us that experienced it first hand debate their reports. There were far more than 60 injured - two people suffered heart incidents, lots of cuts and broken bones from broken glass and falls. The pool was COMPLETELY emptied out from how high up the one side lifted - we went high enough up that the entire pool emptied out. That alone should tell you how severe it was. Worse, it took nearly 15 or so minutes for them to make any announcement. They say there was a partially submerged buoy that they didn’t see until they were right up on it. BS bc the day was super clear - also, many of us saw the radar clearly showing two small protrusions ahead. Likely someone was asleep at the wheel. I was at the back of the boat and certainly did not see a buoy. It is interesting though what could it have been in the middle of the gulf between Mexico and Texas. Could there have been two small islands or sandbars in such deep waters? Either way, I vowed to never cruise again. Finally in 2017 I went with my brother’s family and thankfully had a pleasant and eventless sail.

Having been a former cruise staff member and entertainer on an RC ship, I understand the dangers of unpredictable weather during a cruise. During one cruise, we came upon a severe hurricane. Passengers were in danger of being injured by anything that wasn't secured to a stable surface. It was frightening to duck bus trays filled with glassware and china as they flew across the dining room during dinner service. Passengers stumbled their way back to the safety of their staterooms where they remained until we passed through the storm hours later. Needless to say, there was a run on Dramamine! It was one of the most harrowing experiences of my life.

@@annabellessweetdreams3787 you don’t realize on a cruise ship either. Sharks won’t be an issue because sharks don’t randomly attack people. The ship ran aground near a port in the Caribbean, so they boated all the passengers and many of the crew off to another ship. Regarding the first clip, the best lifeboat is the ship. If you're in heavy weather, it's going to be worse in a small lifeboat than it is in a big cruise ship, so unless it's actually sinking, on fire or on the rocks, it's better not to abandon ship. Fortunately in this case helicopters were able to take passengers off.

The strangest thing that ever happened while I was on a cruise was when our ship discovered a small capsized dingy boat in the Gulf of Mexico. This was on the Carnival Dream in 2017. I noticed that the sun was on the opposite side of the ship and our wake was next to us. People began to make their way to the port side of the ship. There was a small boat capsized in the water that the ship was circling. The general assumption was that we were the first to discover it and had been ordered to inspect it by the coast guard. However, there was nobody on the boat and we eventually went on our way. Everybody on board assumed it to be a dingy boat drug behind a larger boat that likely broke loose at some point during the night and went unnoticed. Not a disaster by any means, but definitely something nobody expected to happen

You have the most famous cruise ship disaster and the 1503 lost souls, 700 crew and the whole of the engineering division to thank. The incredibly low mortality rate for cruising today is on the back of the R.M.S. Titanic, the changes introduced because of the loss resulted in a much safer form of transport for passengers. Crew of merchant vessels have always been brave with one exception my 11 uncles were merchant seamen during the war, they fought and died without weapons. The other was like me in the RAMC. It's this bravery that keeps passengers alive. Calm seas and a following wind.

My friend works on a cruise ship and she said that they have a massive, hidden store of weapons on the ship and they are trained to use them if pirates start to get the upper hand. But pirate attacks on cruise ships are exceedingly rare. The ship is too large to board for an actual takeover.
