That should have been #1, easily, and Microsoft's incredibly slow reaction to it in the several days following the XBox One announcement. It literally lost this generation of the console wars for them after they spent so many years clawing the market away from Sony. Of course by shifting their focus back to the PC, they made an equally brilliant decision, as the PC is now dominating the gaming market, rendering the console market increasingly irrelevant. They used their built in advantage to great effect! That move earned them lots of loyalty points from gamers who refuse to abandon their extremely optimized platform, especially after Steam's pitiful effort to draw gamers away emphasized how well supported gaming is on Windows.

Using cartridges allowed the N64 to have faster data transmission. So it helped with loading times and level size (meaning more semi open world feel for levels, like mario 64, banjo kazooie, etc). Using the CD would have allowed it to have more detailed graphics, but loading times would have been longer, and levels probably a lot of bite sized ones. @@sonybae4652 It's not so much the money, it's more the principle of the matter. Used to be that when you bought a game, you had a complete game you could fully enjoy and do what you want with. Now - game are consistently released broken and unfinished; the retail price is just a base rate, you have to pay extra to get a complete game via DLC and microtransactions; Special Edition versions are seldom complete packages, any perks are single use downloads; an increasing number of games require online connectivity, unconscionably even when online elements aren't an integral part of the game; there's a concerted push toward killing the secondhand game market, can't on-sell digital downloads (afaik), and many discs now require paying for an extra registration to fully unlock the features. Etc, etc, etc . . . . Having to also pay extra to use the multiplayer feature of a game you've already paid for is just another kick in the bollocks. Admittedly (with PSN anyway, don't know about the others) you do get a lot of bang for your buck when you get Playstation Plus. But still, shouldn't be a requirement for playing games you already own. (Which is another point of semantic contention. Used to be when you bought a game, you owned that game. Now the manufacturers claim is typically that when you "buy" a game, you've just paid for a licence to play it, or some nonsense like that.)

All IMHO of course: 9. It was released next to the normal PSP and was an option, not a replacement. 8. Not really a 'worst' decisions. Just an omission that some people missed. 6. The cartridge is what defined the system. 5. HD-DVD was being pushed by Microsoft because it's open source. The disc would be easier to produce and and work on more platforms, like PC, without additional software and licenses. It ended up failing, but it was the better format. The disc had less storage, but it had better compression. And the PS3 didn't use because it was backed by movie studios, most studios supported it, because PS3 had a Blu Ray. I still feel that Sony used pretty dirty tactics to make Blu Ray the dominant format and force studios toward it. 4. Same reason the Game Boy didn't have a backlight, price and batterylife. I wished it had a backlight to, but the the SP did have it. So 'bad' decision, but not worst.

For instance, since I share a residence with a close friend of mine, our media center consists of the following on top of 2 chests of drawers: -a flatscreen TV bolted to the wall -an Android box -a record player -2 enormous speakers -a stereo -a Wii U -a 12 disc cd player -an Xbox one -a PS4 -stacks of games for each console -and yes, a Wii, stood on its end awkwardly sandwiched between a stack of Xbox discs and the right speaker while seated on top of the 12 disc changer. Small correction Sony does not nor ever has solely own the Blu-ray format. It is part of the Blu-ray Disc Association, which all jointly own the hardware /software patents involved with Blu-ray. This was originally the Blu-ray Disc Founder Group, which consisted of Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung Electronics. Basically Microsoft had hoped it's clout alone would be able to push the medium forward (HD-DVD) but behind the scenes even before the release of the PS3 the BDA had already made contracts with all but two of the 8 major studios at the time including Disney. Basically there was never even going to be a format war from the start both because of the complete technical superiority and just the sheer amount of money already backing the format (Blu-Ray) before it launched. Anyway just wanted to point out that this was not a heads up MS and Toshiba vs Sony. It was also 8 other major consumer electronics players as well as six major studios contractually exclusive to the Blu-Ray format with the seventh (I believe it was MGM) releasing on both and Paramount being the only Studio under contract with Toshiba. So while to the uninformed console masses it looked like it would be a format war it was pretty much already over before either technology launched. The sales also bore that out if you compared the data at the time. I will say this it was great while HD-DVD was around as Bluray Made sure to keep the price at the DVD standard $19.99 in most US locales, and often you could find Blu-ray versions that had been legitimately fully remastered cheaper than their DVD counterpart.
@Dgardei5 жыл бұрын
HD-DVD was made by Toshiba.... No wonder it failed. LOL. Of course Toshiba was probably a lot better than Toshiba today. @@frankie6273 The Switch doesn't use cartridges, they use solid drive storage. The two look the same because they both use copper connectors but inside they are different. A reason why cartridges are expensive is because each game cartridge is unique. With CD's you can just mass-produce blank CD's and put different games on them. You can't do that with cartridges as a cartridge needs to be custom made for the game. Solid drive like the Switch is also re writable though of course they have many checks build in to prevent that.

If Atari had actually launched the 7800 according to plan in 1984 it probably would have done fairly well. They would have gotten a head start on the NES and while I'm sure the NES would have over taken it, they would have had a respectable install base by then. But instead, they waited until the NES was already out and what was supposed to be the launch lineup in 1984 turned into a slow trickle of games because they couldn't decide if they really wanted to invest in the system. The botched launch of the 7800 along with not having a 16-bit system doomed Atari. The Jaguar is almost not worth mentioning because the situation was already beyond hopeless by the time it launched.

Yes, i can sort of understand that people are worried about ownership of their games, and losing access to an account that has thousands of dollars worth of games. Personally i've had my Steam account literally since the day it came out (because the newest update of Counter-Strike required it) and never looked back. It's so funny reading that so many games are complaining about paying for online play. I mean... those people clearly have no idea for business and take stuff like that for granted. Personally, making DLCs taking up more and more of a main game content is the worst decision in a long time. Just buying a game is _almost_ impossible. I get the idea of it, but it's actually a sign of low quality. Take for instance the backstory of characters in FF15. Those are moved to DLCs. Decisions like that are bad...really bad. Making DLCs as part of a prologue or sideline addition is definitively fine and actually very awesome - but keep DLC out of the main game. And as for micro-transactions... well, they can go die and rot in hell. I get the idea of Freemium stuff - but paying for a game AND having to utilize micro-transactions in that same game is just... greedy, horrible and definitively beyond me.
@MrMarinus185 жыл бұрын
Indeed because buying a game whole like that means averaging out your market. Using DLC allows you to maximize sales because you can have every customer pay exactly how much they want. Those who are rich go for luxurious sets and those who are poor for more basic ones. Creating classifications in price is a reality of business. People do not buy 2 of the same game for themselves so they use DLC to give that price classification instead.
@mayhem51835 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I completely agree. Used to be when a game was released, it had to be done, complete. Meticulously bug tested to prevent a random glitch from breaking the game. And if they had more content that they had to cut from the game, for whatever reason, they had to make a sequel. Now, when a game gets released, it's basically a beta, a rough draft. I realize I'm talking about patches, not exactly the same thing as DLCs, although another sign of the low quality your talking about. I feel that way about the current gen consoles as well. Yeah, consoles have had been redesigned and re-released in the past, but it was generally just a smaller, more efficient, cheaper, refined design. It performed exactly the same as the original. Maybe with a bigger hard drive. I was only recently finally able to get a PS4. I'm a huge gamer, but several hundred dollars is a hard thing for me to come up with. And I was getting kinda sad, I was missing all of these awesome games. I have only had a couple opportunites to play any current gen consoles at some friend's houses. And they came out in 2013. But luck came my way and I was able to pick up a used PS4. But I don't really feel like I have one. I almost have one, but not quite. The games look better than last gen games, but not nearly as good as they do on the actual PS4. The PS4 Pro, or the Xbox One X. The actual, finished consoles. I waited to play games that were released on both last gen and current gen so I could get the better graphics. Now I have a current gen console, but it still feels like I am a generation behind. 5 more in no particular order: 1. Sega releasing the 32x 2. No backwards capacity with Genesis games on the Saturn (was SO foolish! The Genesis was so popular and Sega did not make use of this easy advantage over newcomers Sony) 3. No DVD players on Dreamcast (or somewhat lesser extent GameCube). 4. Nintendo scrapping Sony’s CD-SNES deal (or making sure the initial contract didn’t favour Sony so much more which forced them to do so!) 5. Only one control stick on Dreamcast controller (I guess the console was finished before it really mattered but using buttons to move forward in First Person Shooters was awkward/outdated for a 6th generation console)

Your take on HD-DVD...missed the mark. And I say this as someone who worked as a software developer for both formats. For one, Microsoft didn't own the HD DVD format. For two, the 360 released a year prior to the PS3, which is something you should keep in mind. The original PS3 units had BD drives that failed relatively often...and Bluray Disc production yields for quite a while were in the gutter - we're talking 90% of all discs being garbage. As of a few years ago, Sony had not yet fully recouped the cost of the research required for BluRay. Production of DVDs however was easily converted to produce HD DVDs with good yields. HD DVD had a few great features too - publishers couldn't force you to watch any previews. No region locking. More advanced interactive menus...and better multi angle support for...well, you figure that one out. And HD DVD did have a smaller data cap to it, but it was quite adequate for movies. But the game discs themselves? DVDs. Again, the XBox 360 shipped too soon for these formats. The HD DVD drive was an addon for the console via USB. Studios backed BluRay? Well, yes - eventually. In 2008...when they decided to end the format war. Go digging for info there...but let's just say Sony was hell bent on not losing another format war. Lack of HD DVD burner drives? Well...yeah. But that's because Sony bought the only company that held the patents to make the burner drives, and Japan has no real anti-trust/anti-monopoly laws. There's a lot more to the whole thing than you're letting on...and I think you really missed the mark.

You missed the PS3 not having rumble in their controllers, claiming they couldn't get the six axis of the controls with a rumble, clearly disproven by the DS3 coming out within a year... How about no trophies for the PS3 for the first year? PS3 was Sony's biggest screw up launch which was beaten by Microsoft's Xbox One launch, funny how Sony forgot about their huge mistakes with the PS3 when they launched the PS4, and people hated on Microsoft for their mistakes but ignored Sony's ones... 😛

The PS3 was indeed a major setback. At least how I remember it, it had the reputation of being WAY overkill. That it had a lot of features nobody ever used and that the X-360 was good enough for everything while being much cheaper.
@mayhem51835 жыл бұрын
And the PS3 was $600....THE premium gaming console...blu-ray and high definition and blah blah. However, most games the highest supported video output is 720p. While the exact same games on the 360 are 1080p. Blu ray or not, it doesn't seem the PS3 was so great after all. Well, at least you did not have to buy a separate add on HDDVD drive to watch movies.

@@mayhem5183 Yeah but in terms of games and and console exclusives, the PS3 blew the 360 out the water, and the PS3 had a far superior controller as well.
