I'm here to tell ya, that Druther's in the thumbnail made me mad. There's one still in Campbellsville, KY and it has some of the best food I've had at a small town restaurant. The service is actually better than a LOT of name brand places, also... Their breakfast is very good, and you get quite a bit of food for the money. So this whole "nobody misses" opinion is actually invalid. Just because other Druther's restaurants failed, doesn't mean they were serving bad food. Until you go to Campbellsville, KY and try it for yourself, please don't judge.

If I'm not mistaken, Burger Chef you put the toppings on your burger. The lettace, onions, pickles, etc. You just got the size of burger you wanted with or without cheese and or bacon and you put what you liked on it at the toppings bar.

I have a particular soft spot for Naugles. They wound up in the Midwest where I am and had something no one else could touch: Open 24/7 with a full menu. I worked the night shift and could go to Naugles and get DINNER after work. What a concept! Didn't last long, however, I still think about them.

@JDoors Fond memories and appreciation for Naugles. Having a fast-food restaurant open 24/7 with a full menu can be a rare find, especially during late-night or early-morning hours. Naugles provided a convenient dining option for those working night shifts or needing a meal outside of regular operating hours.🥰

Actually, Chicken George was the character Ben Vereen played in Alex Haley's Roots miniseries in 1977 but I doubt there's any connection! Doggie Diner isn't 100% gone as there's talks about them returning to Napa Valley, CA.

We used to have a White Tower in my neighborhood when I was growing up. It was actually pretty good. It was really missed after it closed. It was unusual because it didn’t have any inside dining. It had a walk up window and was only carry out. I remember Pup n Taco and it was a nice change for hot dogs. I got food poisoning at one just before it closed so it wasn’t missed. I loved Burger Chef. Their burgers were so much better than Burger King and their sauce was heads above McDonald’s. It was so sad when they closed. I didn’t know Burger Queen was a real chain. I always thought it was a joke. Naugles wasn’t all that special. Taco Bell was the go to when money was tight. Del Taco was a bit better. The last time I ate at one, it was pretty lame. Quality had gone down.

In the early 1980s, we had a Naugles in Indiana. I was in the Navy at Great Lakes, Ill. navy base for training. A few of us would drive over the border into Indiana and eat at Naugles. They had a HUGE burrito that we could only eat a half of at a time. It was good as were their Nacho Chips. 😎👍 I also recall "White Hen", another "White Castle Wannabe".

Pup n Taco had some of the best locations/real estate in SoCal for fast food. Taco Bell locations were mostly Walk-ups until Pup N Taco sold to Taco Bell allowing them to focus on an improved Drive Thru model. The family that owned Pup n Taco wasn’t interested in fighting to become a national brand so they sold to Taco Bell. But it should be said Pup n Taco had better tacos than Taco Bell and better fries than McDonald’s.

I can understand White Tower and D'Lites being on there. One is a shameless knockoff and one was too ahead of its time. And maybe Naugles but they're making a slow comeback. Others I'm split on. Fun fact, out of all these restaurants on this list, one or two still remain. Henry's Hamburger's in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Druther's in Campbellsville, Kentucky and three Naugles locations in the Las Vegas metro area in Nevada, having made a (so far) successful comeback. Idea for an upload. How about more restaurants chains we wish were everywhere? We have four in WV. Gino's Pizza and Spaghetti House, Giovanni's Pizza, Tudor's Biscuit World and Husson's Pizza.

Forgot about White Tower in Toledo, Ohio. It was the last White Tower in existence but sadly, it is no more. A fire damaged the building in 2022 and reopened for a time this year but it's now closed for good. (Probably)

@Rockin' Remnants While change is a part of life, it's always wonderful to look back on those cherished memories of dining at Henry's. Remembering the moments and flavors you enjoyed can bring a sense of warmth even as time moves forward. 🍔🥤🍟🍽️

Henry's, Druther's, and D'Lites have really sad stories [had Henry's and Druther's adapted to times, and if D'Lite made mascots/fun advertising, they might have survived], but the two chains that I REALLY believe deserved better were Burger Chef [a pioneer in fast food, invented the Fun Meal before Mcdonald's had Happy Meal, and Burger Chef had a fun cast of characters], and ESPECIALLY Howard Johnson's [the chain could've added drive thru and takeout, but I'm pretty sure most of the blame lies on whoever owned the hotel chain as well]. The nursery rhyme theming was unique, and with the popularity of Dreamworks, could've seen major success had they not faded over the years. I've heard so many good things about some of these chains, and it makes me sad I never got to try any of them, but especially Burger Chef, Druther's, Howard Johnson's, and 70s era Jack In The Box.

@MuppetsRetroFan88 It's understandable to feel a sense of nostalgia and sadness for the loss of certain fast-food chains like Burger Chef, Druther's, Howard Johnson's, and the 70s era Jack In The Box. Each of these chains had their unique qualities and loyal followings. Burger Chef, as you mentioned, was a pioneer in the fast-food industry and introduced the concept of the Fun Meal before McDonald's launched the Happy Meal. Their fun cast of characters and innovative offerings made them popular among families. Unfortunately, Burger Chef faced challenges and eventually closed its doors. Druther's, formerly known as Burger Queen, had a loyal customer base, but struggled to adapt to changing times and competition. Despite efforts to rebrand and refresh their image, they eventually closed their locations. Howard Johnson's, known for its restaurants and hotels, had a unique nursery rhyme theme that set it apart. While the chain experienced success for many years, various factors, including changing consumer preferences and ownership challenges, contributed to its decline. Jack In The Box, a popular fast-food chain, has gone through several transformations over the years. The 70s era you mentioned had its own unique charm, but as the chain evolved, some elements from that era were phased out or changed.

Druther's was hurt by its Burger Queen past. Burger Queen was awful, When it changed it's name to Druther's the burgers went from terrible to meh and a lot of people didn't give it a chance in spite of the name change.
