Ironically, i actually think Russo’s pitch for the invasion (with Scott Hall entering Raw through the crowd to ask for his job back) was a bit more creative than Cornette’s pitch, but you’re also not given Cornette credit for the idea for the idea he did pitch. Particularly with the worked shoot Benoit stuff, this wasn’t Jim pulling a WCW 2000 and just openly saying things weren’t in the script, but more similar to what they’re doing right now with the Rock in his final boss role, which is use the real life shit people already know and, without beating you over the head with it, use the real life tensions to create the illusion that you might see real conflict playing out on screen. All you’ve gotta do is look at the lore of stuff like Goldberg and Regal or more recently Charlotte and Nia to see that question of an on screen shoot will create a buzz in the right context, and with something like WWF vs WCW you don’t have to stretch too hard to sell people on the notion that there might be real life bad blood.

@Thecallmemisterajp8 ай бұрын
@@JohnWilliams-wl9px Disagree. The whole appeal behind the Invasion in the first place (and the Invasion PPV drew a pretty good number in spite of everything) was that the companies were at war for years. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to draw the conclusion that there might be some genuine bad blood between the two companies, and as much as I liked the programming of the time period, Cornette’s set it up much better than the programs around hugs, songs, and other comedic. Edit: This is without considering the fact that worked shoots had been done successfully at the time in a manner that got over outside of the online world. The whole reason the nWo was successful was that WCW was able to work people into believing that WWF guys were invading the company for real and attacking people (with some scenes being so believable that people were calling the police during some of the attacks). For me personally, I wasn’t reading the dirt sheets at age 12, but when HBK collapsed on Raw and all the announcers went silent, it wasn’t a hard sell to believe that this one incident within the context of a worked show might have been the real deal, and they were able to do that without burying the rest of the program. People focus on one poorly done stretch in WCW 2000 and paint worked shoots with a broad brush, but trying to get people to believe that what you see is real is the essence of what wrestling is supposed to be. It’s all in how you do it.
@dhenderson18108 ай бұрын
@@ThecallmemisterajpPart of the problem with the Invasion storyline, no matter who pitched it or what version, was that Goldberg, Rey Mysterio, Sting and other heavy hitters wouldn't join WWE straight away. If those guys joined in 2001, you would get a much better Invasion angle.
