Thanks so much for mentioning the "Shut Up Kiss." It's usually framed as romantic, when one party interrupts the other's rambling to show that they understand their point, but it just feels so awkward and non consensual. Also, it would rarely work as smoothly in real life.
@loltadynicneni9132 жыл бұрын
As someone who sometimes wishes someone would shut up their rambling, maybe it might work if the kisser *knows* the other enough to notice they're nervous and don't really know how to stop talking and just getting more and more tangled up in what they're saying? as an avid fanfiction reader, omg these things bother me so much. more to add to the list that I see ALL THE TIME: when they describe the teeth clinking together, like is that not painful? usually the teeth clinking comes right after the "they slammed their lips together" line, and it's just, how is that not painful? Or when the author describes the drool between the two characters, especially when they're like "their faces separated but were connected by a line of saliva" like I'm sorry that's not sexy that's gross (or one time I read one where the other character *licked* the saliva off, I wanted to hurl) and the shut up kiss one really pisses me off, I've seen some where it can be done well (like stories where there's been previously established consent that they can kiss the other person any time, and neither of the characters are mad, maybe one is just a rambling doofus who got kissed to snap out of it or something) but like 99% of the time I've seen it, it's the nonconsensual angry type where the character is just bored or annoyed at the other one talking, it's so bad

Point 3: My husband actually does flick his tongue into my mouth sometimes when I go to kiss him. He does it to get a reaction from me and because he thinks it's hilarious when he gets whacked for it. Neither of us think it's romantic or even pleasant, it's weird. And although weird can be fun if everyone is good humoured about it, tongue flicking is taken very seriously when it appears in romantic fiction and it's frickin' weird (in the bad way) to read. Writers who must write tongue flicking should consider subverting the trope by making it into a joke.

The “talking close to the other person’s face without kissing” thing does happen in my experience, but not in the way it usually is in books and movies. It’s more like you meet somebody at a bar, it’s super loud and you want to get to know them, so you talk really really close so that you can actually hear each other. The closeness is so you can hear them, not necessarily because you’re ready to kiss them yet. And it’s more like yelling than that weird whispering stuff you see in stories because the main point is being able to hear them, lol.

I feel like the shut up kiss can be soooooo good, but in such specific circumstances? Like, established relationship, or established that they're both interested, just waiting a bit more, so it's not just some A assulting B at random. The anger/panic/excitement/whatever that has B rambling shouldn't be caused by A, at least not directly. Could be like A was attacked/insulted, and B is upset on their behalf? And A is touched, but does NOT want to retaliate, and tries to stop B, and then tell B they're used to it happening? Or B panicking, and A kissing them to get them out of a downward spiral? They're sneaking around/hiding somewhere, B gets either scared and panicky, or cocky and brags that it's going well, and A shuts them up so they don't get caught? I think I read a scene in a fanfic where they were in a secret relationship because A is afraid to come out/unsure of their identity, while B would have been perfectly ok with it. Later on when they get caught, B immediately tries to deny it for A's sake, but A has come to accept it/feels ready, and kisses B publicly, stopping their bs excuses and admitting their relationship. That was cute?

I find that lots of scenes of intimacy (be it kissing or sex) has characters that seem so *into* they seem really angry, like growling and lunging and crashing lips and battling tongues. Never experienced it so maybe I'm wrong, but surely kissing or sexing someone doesn't make you feel cross?
@iancossey1052 жыл бұрын
I suspect those writers were trying (badly) to describe what you might call 'hard' kissing, i.e. when two people are so passionate for each other they almost literally can't control their ardour and so the kissing is urgent, hungry, maybe a little bit rough. There are all sorts of kisses, after all; not all of them are tender. And it's certainly more than possible for two consenting adults to have rough or aggressive sex without it being abusive - indeed, many couples like it best that way! :-) My guess is that's what the writers are aiming for, but aren't skilled enough to get the nuances right and just end up making their characters seem angry instead.
@jocelyncordeiro48702 жыл бұрын
While I haven't written many kiss scenes, I do believe that less is more when describing them. I don't even describe the kiss at all. I just describe little things that happen before and after the kiss. For example, if the couple was sitting side by side when they kissed, the girl would rest her head on the guy's shoulder afterwards. Or if they were facing one another, they would hug afterwards. Simple stuff like that.

Most of these points can actually work within proper context. The shut and kiss for example. I do confess, I have used the 'mouths crashed together' multiple times, but usually in a more aggressive character, the shy ones or more moderate type characters never do that. I think this trope is supposed to be illustrating a sort of intense passion that isn't meant to be literal crashing? That's how I've always interpreted it anyways... But this vid had me giggling a lot, as I get some of these bad descripts are and unfortunately end up in books that get made into movies... that are just as bad. lol.

Worst kiss I've ever read was from the most painful story I've ever read. First of all, the guy thought she was sleeping and it was just after she'd broken up with someone else. But there's a twist! She was only pretending to sleep, and gets herself in this situation often: she finds someone to pretend to date for a week before breaking up, each time looking forward to being consoled by this guy in such a way.

I don't know, "shut up and kiss" scene is cute when like one is rambling and stressed and just needs some affection to chill.

I don't think it's a matter of being a kiss-virgin, as even before having my first kiss a couple weeks ago at age 22 I also hated reading/writing these tropes

I need to start watching these videos more again, I forgot how hilarious they are. And I agree with all of the points!!!

I always love Jenna’s videos but the whole discussion on tongue fight just made my day a whole lot better hahahahahaha… on a side note, I had the “pleasure” to encounter some flickering tongues in my life… I do not recommend hahahaha

Most of my experience with the shut up kiss is in a love confession situation. The confessing party barely manages to stammer out their confession and immediately start babbling how it’s ok if the other person doesn’t like them back when said party admits to liking them back by kissing them.

On the subject of number two being embarrassing, isn't that the point of the trope? Isn;t it for people who have a humiliation kink?

Omg you are my hero! I can not stop watching all your videos even if they have nothing to do with what I need to know. This is like the 5 video that had me laughing so hard. This is how all research should be presented. Everyone will remember information presented this way.

I am cracking up over the tongue flicking. "One, two, three, four I declare a tongue war." 🤣 Yeah, the giant mouth thing is terrible. Yuk.

Listen, I ain't ever been in a relationship in my life but I have witnessed many couples in my life just kiss normally and have read plenty of fanfiction to understand these tropes to the point where I just make my kiss scenes simple like "he/she/they kisses their lover gently/softly on the lips" and or if I want to mix up the words, i use the usual "pressing lips" thing

I've noticed that the begging thing seems to be pretty popular in fiction and it's just weird. I just don't see real people who don't suffer from an extremely severe case of low self esteem genuinely doing this. And the thing where fictional people talk really close to each other is pretty awkward unless there's a reason for the two characters to be doing it, like, maybe they're hiding in a small place or something, but then i think they should be focused on whatever is causing them to be in there in the first place, rather then the fact that they're smelling each other's mouth. The 'shut up kiss' is disgusting. I agree that the normal reaction to the shut up kiss is to get even more upset. If someone did that to me I'd respond with a slap to the face.

8:00 I can only imagine the author has given their characters both ample, pillows lips to cushion that slamming together. Having thin lips myself, no amount of puckering would protect me from a chipped tooth.

Oh wait, I guess I don't either. Sort of? It's from an old Harry x Draco fic, but I don't know the title or who wrote it
