When I did a boat tour in Amsterdam the guy leading the tour warned us to please hold any proposals until the end of the tour. Apparently a few months earlier some guy decided to propose to his girlfriend within the first 5 minutes of the tour and she said no, resulting in the rest of the hour and a half long tour being very awkward for everyone on board

I’m not at all fond of public proposals because there’s this pressure for the one being proposed to to say yes in front of tons of people. However, there’s also the embarrassment of being rejected because the person proposing looks like an idiot for going through all the trouble and the one being proposed to looks like a jerk for turning them down. Private proposals are usually the best because they’re just between the couples themselves, something special and they make for a great story to tell

Yeah I actually have been proposed to and turned them down. I did not know them very well we were literally not even official we had just been going on dates for like a month. And they asked me in a restaurant. And everyone gathered around and waited, the whole restaurant was watching, so I said yes because I didn't want to embarrass him. And when we got in the car I told them that the answer really was no. And he. freaked. out. I explained that I just didn't want to embarrass him in front of all the people and he's like you said yes tho, but you said yes and I'm like YEAH BECAUSE I WAS TRYING TO SPARE YOU. And he said BUT YOU ALREADY SAID YES! It was literally like talking to a brick wall. Needless to say I got another ride home and never spoke to him again. I'm lucky enough to have learned a year before my proposal that my partner didn't like public proposals. When I proposed privately, she said "maybe"... Which later became a "yes". My gut was turning for the 18 hours I patiently waited for her response. I ended up seeing the positive side. I knew she was certain about it since she took the time to consider everything. If you are the person being proposed to, it's likely that it might not be good for your mental health all because a large group of people forced or pressured you into saying yes... Mine was 'private' in that it was just my now-wife and myself, but it took place at a restaurant (like a lot of marriage proposals) with restaurant management/staff helping to make it special (the chef wrote her name in chocolate sauce on the plate next to her favorite cheesecake, followed by, 'would you....'), and then I asked her. A couple of people we didn't know came up to us after to congratulate us but that was it. There was no huge spectacle.

To be fair...it could be just a mix of things. Most people don't want to be put on the spot in such a way in normal circumstances. My brother's ex-fiancee broke up with him 2 days before the wedding. She called me and said that her sister had not bought the bridesmaid dress, and then hung up in a huff about something. It's been 12 years, I don't remember what. The morning of their wedding day in May 2012, she angrily returned the ring at a local park. I didn't see the rejection as I was on the other side of the wall when she called him to call it off but he was miserable for months, and when my cousin got married the next week, he was forced to be the sound guy through his tears. He spent the summer at my aunt and uncle's Christian summer camp in Pennsylvania, and decided to ignore his electronics until he got back home in August/September. He in now happily married, so it worked out ok.

In 9th grade, one of my classmates showed up to school in a red and black suit, carrying roses and a portable stereo. (This was the late 90s.) He approached one of the most popular girls in school, started some romantic music, handed her the roses, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him. My aunt’s friend was at a restaurant and a rejected proposal happened. The lady left leaving him needing a ride. My aunts friend offered him a ride, they began dating, and have been married 24 years now. The lady that said no to him married one of his friends. He constantly cheated on her and left her for a younger chick. She recently confessed to a mutual friend of theirs that she regretted not saying yes. My aunt said that the couple dated for 2 years and immediately broke up after the rejected proposal. Regret is the heaviest things us humans can carry

A guy one time proposed at a Shania Twain concert. He actually did it on stage, as Shania allowed it. The guy wrote a letter to Shania to make that request. It's a good thing she said yes. If said no, that would have ruined the concert.

It was in disney world, and Smash Mouth was performing a popup concert, apparently it was all part of a planned marriage proposal. They got brought up on stage and the girl was just obviously uncomfortable, he pops the question and the awkward pause followed. The band picked up on the 'no' and played 'I'm A Believer' to play off the awkwardness. You could see the couple getting off stage and having an argument. Folks, don't do public proposals unless you talk about it beforehand.

Speaking of China, I also saw a video of a rejection but it’s the man who rejected the girl’s proposal. Long story short, the girl proposed to him with tons of her friends and flowers. He rejected them immediately. To this day, I don’t know why. But looking at the video, I feel that it has to do with social status as the man is middle class and the girl is upper class.
