In the 2014 off-season, collingwood sent Dayne Beams to Brisbane along pick 69 in exchange for pick 5, 25, and jack crisp. Those picks turned into Jordan de Goey and Levi greenwood. Beams was an incredible player, yes, but I think it's fair to say crisp, de Goey, and greenwood were far better.

TBF Brisbane’s hands were tied with that trade. They were coming off the “go home 5” saga, and an established superstar wanted to go to Queensland. That years top 10 players were interstate based so there would’ve been the concern of pick 5 leaving after their first contract was up, and if the lions didn’t jump on Dayne, the suns most likely would, which would’ve set a bad precedent for a club in dire straits at the time.

Carlton traded Pick 16 and 46 for defender Stephen O'Reilly, who only played a handful of games for them. Bad enough on its own, but he was the one who indirectly ended up blowing open the Carlton salary cap cheating scandal, which resulted in Carlton losing most of their picks in 2003 and 2004. So it ended up being: Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16 + Pick 46 + Pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft + Pick 1 in the 2003 PSD + Carlton's 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

At the end of 2012 the Eagles had Dean Cox, Scott Lycett and a guy by the name of Naitanui on their list. The did not need another ruckman, Grundy. It would have been fairer to rate this trade if you compared Wellingham to the next best Half back Mid fielder from that draft. A quick look at the draft from that year shows very few players doing anything near what Wellingham did at the Eagles. This example, is, an unfortunate, weakness of your analysis.

Just because a club managed to snag a draft steal with a low pick doesn't make trading away that low pick a "Bad trade" for the club who traded it. The recipient club could have just as easily drafted a nobody who never played a game with their pick 32 or whatever. E.G when Sydney traded away pick 31 for a player, it's not really anything to with that trade that Brisbane were lucky enough to pick up Simon Black at 31. Every other team could have drafted Black earlier if they wanted to. Likewise, Hawthorn picking up Sam Mitchell at 36 shouldn't count against Fremantle. Hawthorn's first pick that year (pick 16) was Rick Ladson, if those picks were reversed, nobody would think Fremantle made a terrible trade.

Fremantle trading pick 1 for crent toad was beyond daft. And they wonder why they haven’t won a premiership. Still, their supporters who have been there from the start and all the way through are the most loyal I’ve ever met, time for Freo to reward them with a flag. And I’m saying this as a West Coast supporter (but one who spent early part of my childhood in Fremantle. So have a soft spot for all things Freo. South Freo are my WAFL team).

Basing it on picks is fraught with uncertainty, Hawthorn took Mitch Thorpe with pick 6 in 2007 and Geelong took Joel Selwood at pick 7. I was hoping for a list about direct player trades. Your #1 missed a few details as well, Trent Croad was traded as a forward and only became a backman when he came back to Hawthorn. The Wellingham-Grundy trade wasn't bad. Both teams won. Collingwood got an All Australian ruckman, and West Coast got a half back that was pivotal in them reaching the 2015 GF. More importantly, West Coast wouldn't have drafted Grundy if they held onto that pick because they already had a guy called Nic Natanui. And don't forget, Grundy's form got so bad they shipped him off to Melbourne. Then he essentially played VFL for them, so they shipped him off to Sydney. He has been bad for a while now.

That last trade was bad enough that Freo basically won those 4 flags and handed them to Hawthorn lol! I tend to think clubs can extract a lot out of players. I remember when the media gave shit to Collingwood for recruiting the "overweight" Leigh Brown, who starred and helped the pies win their 2010 flag. (Same could be said for players like Luke Ball, Darren Jolly and Paul Medhurst) Geelong has been so good in the last two decades, that basically any sketchy looking trade seems to work out for them. Teams often know what they need more than we can, but sometimes bad luck can happen. Your "Worst trades in AFL history" includes a couple where one side of the trade was badly injured and career ending. I mean, that's hardly a "bad trade" as much as it is, just "shit luck", right?

I think effectively if you're saying Daniel Wells to North Melbourne and Wayne Carey to Adelaide was one of the "worst trades" I think that's a bad take. Carey had plenty of good games for Adelaide, but just didn't play at the lofty heights that he reached at North Melbourne when he was often thought to be one of the greatest ever players. He had a freak injury. Daniel Wells was a highly skilled player at times, but I think he was a bit inconsistent. The Roos never had a fantastic record with him from memory.
