In this vid, we'll do a complete overhaul and repair on this early 1970s BSR McDonald 4800 record changer. I found it at a yard sale for $10. The lady said it worked, but of course I knew it wouldn't. The platter was completely seized and the entire thing needed lubrication.

about 15 years ago my daughter heard me saying that I wanted to buy a turntable so I could listen to my old records the way they were meant to be heard. So she went to a yard sale and found a really nice turntable stereo system that even had an 8 track built in! She took it home with her and at the time her and her new husband were staying with her inlaws and her father in law happened to see the stereo system she had just purchased. Oh, prior to him seeing it she did turn it on and everything worked. He convinced her to trade him for his old turntable because he had a whole collection of 8 tracks where as I had none. He told her his was in really great condition and everything worked as it should. His was just the basic turntable with a AM/FM radio. She made the trade with him and he even helped her box the turntable up and ship it to me here in Alabama from Michigan where she was. When I got home off the road, Im a trucker, there was this nice big box and since she had told me the story a few days earlier I knew what was in the box and I was excited! I get the turntable out, wire in my speakers and laid down my vinyl copy of "The best of Bread" (Don't judge me!) and ...nothing... It was turning, it had a stylus I knew the speakers were good, but still I got no sound. So I tell my daughter who then tells her father in law who then says, " huh well it worked before YOU shipped it"!! Yes, he went there! The next day my son in law tells me that his dad knew there was no sound with it and that he basically ripped my daughter off. She only paid like $10 for hers so it's not like she was out some great fortune but still, her own father in law lied about such a thing? I had a couple of days off, unusual for a trucker, so i decided to tinker with it and see if I could get it to work. I discovered that the wires coming down the arm had been cut just as they went through the main top of the stereo and I simply spliced them back together and the stereo worked great - but here is where Karma bit her father in law in the ass. When I took the back off the stereo inside guess what I found? Two, yes two neatly folded and still crisp $100 bills! I told my daughter about it and she told me to keep it as part of my fathers day gift she was planning on sending me in a couple of days, the stereo was part of the early gift since I was going to be home. Her husband got on the phone and said his dad was notorious for sticking money into things like that stereo to hide money and I made sure that they told him I found the money - OHH was he angry!! lol Yes he actually demanded that I return HIS money to him! Normally I would have gave the money back, but since he tried to rip my daughter off, well he didn't try, he did rip her off I said screw him! I did end up giving my daughter $100 of it a few weeks later when I found out she wanted a pair of cowgirl boots but was about $75 short. So in the end all turned out well......

My first vintage electronics project was getting one of these 8-track, record player combo systems for $5. The intention was to give it to an elderly lady that had been a good employee and was soon to retire. It did nothing but hum when I first got it. With a capacitor recap, a relube of the BSR changer, and a new belt for the 8-track it was good as new. She says she listens to it daily.

Old people's testing routine consists of plugging it in and it powers up. 🤣 And some don't even do that. I answered an ad in the free Craigslist section for a dual cassette deck. So I get it home. Oh, it worked really well.... screeching like a banshee when you pushed the play button and the belts were worn out. I heard a funny story a guy posted on a blog about picking up a "working" TV off Craigslist. It didn't work, so.he proceeded to drive the TV back at night and dumped it on the guys lawn with a note attached "Thanks for wasting my time! Take your shit to the dump like everyone else!" Classic!

My whole 39 years of life I wondered what that center pin and over arm was for. I knew it was something to do with dropping a record down. I had no idea you could put several records on it at once. I still not quite sure how it only drops one record with out all of them falling. Regardless, I am now more knowledgeable and I thank you. This video has brought back some great memories. As another person commented " when you start repairing 8 tracks, call me" , I would love to see some 8 track player repair vids. This video is kick ass and very satisfying to watch. Thanks man

Hi, if it hasn't been mentioned below already, there had a ceramic cartridge. The resaon the audio is so loud and 'scatchy' is because I think you have it plugged into a Magnetic Phono input on your amplifier (for Magnetic Cartridges). Try attaching to the AUX or TAKE input and it will sound just fine. :)

That was a nice mechanical puzzle, and you solved it right! In the days I had my bit of fiddling with a mono BSR record player with built in amp and a speaker in the wooden cover. It had a hard plastic turntable and you might hear the drive wheel rumble while playing a record. Eventually I had to replace the pickup element (?) and just by accident I discovered I had bought a stereo element when I played Jimi Hendrix Voodo Chile, because the guitar sound was disappearing. So I rewrired one channel to the built in amplifier and the other to my tube radio phono input and now Jimi's guitar was flying between left and right! So I can relate to your satisfaction of mastering the mystery.

Another unit brought back from the yard sale graveyard! I must have worked on 30-60 of these back in the day. That's what I got for being an "AuthorizedService Center"! The companies would pay $17.58 for the warranty repair for what could take 2-3 hours to complete. Even with experience, taking them apparat and waiting for the WD40 to work, eat up the time! Brad you make great videos!! This one brought back some forgotten memories! After a stout cup of dark roast and watching Uncle Doug this morning, would it be too much to beg you to make another tube amp service/repair ? You may be burned out on them, but we, your loyal followers, need a tube amp fix from the "Kentucky Wonder"! You are one of the best!!! I live for your videos! Thanxz

I had this similar model back in the 1970's during the 1980's the cueing was installed into BSR. I noticed you kept lifting the finger lift & minus the cueing device yet not invented. The Sound those models were made for 10 watts to 30 watts stereos that's why your preamp was humming for those more higher model cartridges. This repair brings me back to many memories of my past models of BSR turntables. I truly enjoyed watching. ✅👍 💽

A fantastic pre-amp for these ceramic cartridge turntables is to use two acoustic guitar preamps. They provide the proper impedance to make these record players sing. Try it out. You can usually find them on ebay for $8-10 each. I like those with an equalizer on them so I can cut the noise out a bit when playing 78s.
@spahr001
@spahr001 5 жыл бұрын
@ You are right that they don't need RIAA equalization (the ceramic pickup provides its own approximation) and that they are high output, but if you plug a ceramic phono cartridge, ceramic microphone, or piezo pickup for guitar/violin into the line input of a modern amplifier it will sound thin and lack bass. Ceramic pickups require a very high impedance of 2 mega-ohms or more for proper performance. Using one of those guitar preamps, their sound quality approaches that of a moving magnet cartridge, and sound especially good with 50s and 60s music.
@spahr001
@spahr001 5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I should mention that ceramic phono cartridges and piezo guitar pickups use the exact same technology.
@spahr001
@spahr001 5 жыл бұрын
@ Ceramic and crystal cartridges are both piezo in nature. They are simply made from different material that performs a similar function. Crystal were very high output (typically 1-3 volts) but had limited ability to reproduce high frequencies. Ceramic cartridges have a lower output, (typically 0.3-0.8 volts) can reproduce higher frequencies, and are less prone to deteriorating in humid environments. Ceramic cartridges replaced most crystal cartridges by the early 60s.

Brad.. bringing memories for me again. Looks like some I've fixed over the years. I've found bad rubber drive wheels and belts to be more prominent back in the 80s.. but let these sit unused for years and voila.. you get glue-brication. Some comments.. I cringed when you aggressively rotated the frozen platter. Changer spindles can be damaged by rotating the platter before letting the oil work it's way in to free it up. Also.. try using a small squeeze dispenser bottle with a 28awg blunt needle tip for the alcohol application then use your q-tips dry to draw the glue-brication out when it's thinned. Much ❤ ✌

I'd hesitate to recommend an old BSR or Garrard equivalent to anybody, they simply will never perform as Hi-Fi. There are hundreds of cheap beautifully engineered turntables from the 60s, 70s and 80s that are still relatively cheap. I doubt you could pick up one for ten dollars, but 40 or 50 is possible. I will not write a list, but if anyone wants pointing in the right direction, you can ask. I've been in the industry over 40 years. Still this was a lovely video and very well done.

Brad, You said that you were going to clean and rejuvenate the rubber wheel. What product do you use to rejuvenate rubber? I need to get some. Also, what "brush" do you use to remove crud from the grooves in dirty records? What liquid cleaner do you use on your records? I remember an alcohol smell, so my bottle of cleaner back in the '70s & '80s may have just been alcohol in an expensive-looking bottle? I can't walk into any local stores to purchase a record cleaning kit, I think -- unless vinyl's resurgence has brought this stuff back to life too. I see cleaning _many_ records along with overhauling a turn table in my near future since I still have my college turn table out in the garage! I need to copy those records before I completely lose the ability to play & copy/save them -- some are not available in any form that I'm aware of.

i read somewhere not to use lithium grease on things that you dont want to have to service again as it breaks down and separates the oil from the thickener and the thickener dries up ? i dont know this for sure but people say lithium grease is good for general household stuff like a squeaky door hinge etc.

You'd have loved the Collaro in my Magnavox console, then. In addition to to the changer mechanism, the old Collaros used to 'tap' the edge of the record to figure out what size it was automatically.

Some nomenclature for you all - this is a record changer, not a turntable. On these, make sure you also free up the cam follower. it's a bearing that's supposed to turn and is also usually frozen. It'll "work" with it frozen, but can eventually develop a flat spot on it and make the action jerky.

My parents had the same exact turntable when I was a kid, cracked dust cover of course. It was on the other side of the wall from my bed so when they were having people over for drinks ( back in the 70s before interwebz people actually hung out with each other, crazy right?) I would be kept up all night listening to Elvis, Tom Jones, and Heino (German singer) when mom was DJ, or Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and Big Band stuff when Dad was at the wheel. They usually ended the night with the same Trini Lopez live album. When my siblings got older I suffered through alot of disco. Thanks for the flashback. Will you take $5 for it since it works? ;)

@@TheGuitologist Did you use the output from the cartridge as the microphone?... If so it might have been the resonant frequency that provided the sound. In recording studios they use woofers as microphones on bass drums for that very same reason, for that extra low end thud.

@@goodun6081 These BSRs are more than good enough sound reproduction for the amplifiers these were typically paired with. A 5 gram tracking force using a conical needle results in about the same record wear as a 2.5 gram elliptical cartridge. As long as you replace the needle when needed your should have little to no perceivable record wear. I make my own cork and foam platter mats to cut down on rumble due to the idler drive. Adding a little blue tack around the arm near the base improves tracking on problematic records as well.

Anyways my platter is not stuck it's fine. It my darn switch that's locked up over on the bottom right. It's plastic so can't force it. Hope to figure out how to take it apart to get to that switch. I found some 45son it from wh3n I put it away in 1987.. jack & Diane by John cougar and mickey by Toni basil lol

Check the idler pulley is centre to it's corresponding location on the motor for the correct speed. There's an adjustment screw NW of the idler pulley to make your adjustment if needed

I suppose it's being an engineer for 40 years, but seeing the spindle turn, I knew immediately the first thing to do was to retighten the spindle from below. I think it is still loose. Edit: As i wrote this, you played the nasty ceramic cartridge into a phono input. It does need a dedicated ceramic input really, which is a high impedance 1Mohm ish input.
