It doesn't really matter if it's old or new tech, but it must be reliable and can be easily, and inexpensively, serviced. If it's broken and can't be fixed, then the tech is useless.

Aluminum boxed section rims with 32/36 spokes and 25 mm tubs pumped up to 100 psi were used on the cobbles because that rim spoke combination allowed for more subtle ride with the stiffness of carbon frames.
@rlm4471
@rlm4471 Ай бұрын
Some have argued that the recent push toward larger tire volumes and lower pressures for road bikes is explained by manufacturers optimizing carbon frames for stiffness. On a classic steel frame, you can get away with thinner tires and higher pressures because the frame itself is a form of suspension.

12:25 I remember Boonen running a 44 inner. And AGAIN: the reason running 55T in the front is not the higher speed, but the smaller increments when changing a gear in the rear + less friction. There is a 9% uphill section on cobbles somewhere in the race (early on), so that 44 inner is still usable or with a 1x you'll have to go to 50 in front and 30 or 32 in the back.

#askGCNtech A good chemistry question for Dr Ollie. It's understood that a tire filled by a CO2 cartridge bleeds the CO2 quickly after being filled, in the next few days. Why aren't these cartridges filled with plain air? It wouldn't be flammable would it? And the air would stay in the tire longer.

#AskGCNTech Aloha all. On my gravel bike I'm running 700x35 slick tires (Rene Herse Band) for road riding here in the rough city streets. They are amazingly smooth, have lots of grip and let me lean deeper into fast turns.I agree with Alex, more people should try wider tire. I've kicked around the idea of going with an even wider tire in the rear - my bike will fit up to a 50mm tire. Rene Herse makes a number of wider sizes at 38, 44, and 48 of the same slick style tire. My question: Would a wider rear tire be even smoother, gripper without the much of an aero penalty? A follow-up question: how wide should I go with a rear tire? This could make for a great video, the pros and cons of a extra wide rear tire... Side note: I ride with 700x48 knobby tires (also from Rene Herse) for more off road adventures, and can't state home much better wider tires ride on rough roads and gravel. Wider tires = better rides.

It's great to see more and more pros moving backs to tubs. Riders who really want reduce the odds of a tire failure are finally starting to wake up! Tubs still dominate CX for a reason. Tubs don't burp. Tubs don't pinch flat. Tubs are more comfortable owing to having a full 360 casing. Tubs make the wheels much lighter. But alas, Tubs are handmade, so can't generate the same profit margin as an open format tire. How will the industry survive!

Definitely, they speed up repairs at roadside and enable you to carry on riding with a fully inflated tyre. I charge my Di2, my Wahoo and check the charge in my electric pump.

#askGCNtech My bottle of chain drip wax froze for a few days while in my garage over the winter (I live in Canada). There is a warning on the bottle to not let it freeze. Is it still OK to use? And this got me to thinking, what about the wax on my chain when my bike is stored in my garage or shed over the winter? If the wax in the bottle shouldn't be frozen, what about the wax on our chains? Should we be dewaxing our chains when storing them for winter?

I think the UCI needs to tighten up its rule on equipment being made available for the public to purchase.

Since "wider tires are faster", I can't wait until next year's tour, everyone should be on fat bikes then since they're obviously the fastest.

sagan won the junior world mtb champs in 2008, when alex came in 47th, one lap behind. alex was on the team relay team the same year though, finishing 14th and beating slovenia. so you could say alex actually beat sagan, if sagan had actually been on the slovenian team, which he sadly wasn't because he is from slovakia and the slovak team finished 11th.

I rode the 1991 amateur Roubaix on an Eddy Merckx Columbus sl , Mavic Roubaix rims 36 spokes, cheap training singles, and 2 pairs of gloves and tyre pressure about 60 psi, 23 mil. Didn’t crash no punctures, how’s that tech.

I don't think the conclusion of Hank and Conor riding cobbles with the suspended seatposts and stems was that they would have preferred rigid posts and stems with fatter, softer tires.
@alexpatonGCN
@alexpatonGCN Ай бұрын
Suspension systems can be beneficial for sure. But my opinion and a logical perspective is that you should maximise what's possible from tyre choice, size and pressure before looking at any extra suspension system
