I think a big part of this problem is the lack of third spaces for younger children and lack of child friendly spaces as many people have said in the video. I mean, even at home; think about all those 'beige' mum influencers. Imagine having your entire life be and world be designed not for you but for adults, all your interactions being some sort of sponsorship or economic action. It's no wonder they have little to no respect for other people, they're actively being taught that they're more important than others if they *just* do this thing like mummy said, like the influencer said, like the tv said. Everything they do, everywhere they go, they are performing, needing to prove that they are more expensive, more, and this is disgusting that they'd even think this, more attractive.

I don’t go to Sephora unless I need stuff for plays, but even then I’m with my mom. We need to stop letting young gen z and old gen alpha do this. ( gen alpha is definitely the ones who do the most damage) but yeah I’m the last year of gen z and even my clan of kids born that year aren’t as bad as my younger friends. My little sister is 12, she had the same saphora phase, she has taken a break from it but she still uses the skincare products. I talked to her about it to make sure there was no anti aging products or any retinol or anything else that could cause her to get hurt. She doesn’t it’s all like preventative stuff for acne and what not but still. I can’t tell you how much it pains me to see her and her friends doing all this because of the beauty standards. I am way more frustrated with the parents. You either watch your own children or hire an actual babysitter.

I, (a 14-year-old), went with my mom to Sephora the other day. The employees saw us, and I could tell they weren't enthused. I went up to one of them, politely asked them about skincare recommendations for oily skin, and they were more than happy to help. I bought the kit - no more than $50 - and that was it. Simple, and I think the workers were a bit relived I caused no trouble. I don't get some of these children. Why be rude when you can have a positive interaction, and move on with your day? This is the kind of behavior you see online, it doesn't translate well to the real world. And kids don't understand that everything they see is exaggerated and faked and over the top so they try to emulate it. And you're right, it is the job of the parents to explain that. If they aren't old enough to know the difference, they shouldn't be watching it.

Parents robbing their own children of their childhood, _and_ endangering them by sexualizing them at such a young age where the kids really can't grasp the weight of what they are being subjected to. That is absolutely horrifying. It's going to cause a lot of challenges for those babies, teaching them that their value is in their appearance and desirability (makeup and nails are one thing, but an expensive push up bra is 1000% sexualizing them). Being exposed to that and the additional inappropriate attention they will get from older men, is going to make it difficult for these young kids to become well-adjusted adults with healthy relationship boundaries. I have professional experience working with pre-teens and teens, particularly kids who are going through really tough situations. All too often our girls are sexualized and objectified at such young ages, and that leads them down dark paths and makes them vulnerable to abuse, assault and self harm. I am genuinely concerned for your nieces and the things this path will expose them to. It's good they have you as at least one sane role model in their lives; it may not seem like much, but your presence will have more of a protective influence than you know. I just hope these little girls are allowed to enjoy being children.

I used to work at BB&B fifteen years ago and parents didn't care what their kids did either. One time we had teens hiding in the pillow bins popping up to scare people, and their mother was all "oh what can you do". Parents didn't care if their kid in a stroller dumped fries all over, they'd just push the stroller through it. In general, people suck in public and it's probably gotten worse. Having been a teacher, a lot of parents just don't care and it's both sad and frustrating. Parents definitely weren't perfect pre internet either, lots of slacker parents then too. It's also really sad to see that for all the progress we've made regarding bodies and beauty standards (being a young woman in the 90s/early 00s was rough), we have also failed these girls. 10 year olds wanting anti aging treatments is just sad. You're very right about the disappearance of 3rd spaces, malls are gone now. It's tough.

Plus when we were done endlessly wandering through Claire's deciding what poor quality item that was going to break in 2 weeks would become out own! The little kids whove gone crying to their teachers because their afraid to die? The next gen has been given a lot of shit already in so many different ways. It’s so bizarre to me when parents just… don’t parent their kids? Like parents are the supreme authority in the house, full stop- your preteen can’t drive themselves to the mall, they don’t have their own bank accounts and credit cards- if they’re being a public nuisance and spending hundreds of dollars on makeup it’s because their parent isn’t stopping them. Like how does it not occur to parents to just… take away their electronics and refuse to drive them anywhere but school until they learn to behave? Or just teach them manners and empathy in the first place?

I think the issue stems from many reasons, a lot of younger parents when they were kids had their parents treat them very badly so now they're overcorrecting by being to permissive. We're going through a cost of living crisis and a lot of parents aren't home as much as they used to be so they're spending money whatever money left over they have on their kids and don't want to say no because they don't want their kids to be mad at them. A lot of parents are also just exhausted and giving their kid an iPad lets them have a break, which is obviously very damaging in the long run. It's absolutely the parents fault but we need to look at the external factors as to why so many parents are choosing to parent this way

Honestly I wouldn’t care if 10 year olds were in my “adult makeup store” if they just acted respectfully. I took an interest in makeup at a young age, but I didn’t go destroy stuff and annoy people. I did the normal thing….went to the clearance rack, got my shit and got out. 🤷🏻‍♀️ If they want to spend all of their parents’ money on stuff that ruins their skin, personally I think that’s on the parents, and not my business. DEFINITELY don’t think adults should be filming kids just walking around the store, no matter what they are doing. That ish is sketchy af and should be illegal.

Totally. Malls and makeup were already very popularized as “teenagers” stuff anyways so i’m so confused why people are so mad to see them in the store??? People just wanna hate on kids atp. It’s sephora, we all wanted to try lipstick and makeup when we were younger because we saw it on tv or in magazines. Tik tok influencers didn’t need to exist for trends to be a thing.🤷🏻‍♀️ These girls’ behaviour and how entitled they are is a big problem though. That’s clearly a huge lack of parenting and boundaries. And it should be called out but without publicly humiliating children by posting videos of them online??? They are kids who did not consent to this. We all had embarrassing and cringe moments as kids and thankfully people didn’t record them to post them online. It’s just sad tbh. I hope they’ll gain some self awareness; and not just the girls, the parents and those tiktokers too.

my sister is one of the “sephora 10year olds” and the reason she likes skincare products so much is because she saw it on tiktok. she saw older influencers making reviews and telling her she NEEDS these skincare products/makeup in order to be pretty and popular and it’s actually really sad for me to see. she’s a consumerist as she buys whatever new thing that’s advertised to her and ends up using it once or twice before she gets something new. it’s social media and beauty standards that are being presented to the newer generation that makes these kids want to buy these products and eventually develop a negative body image because of it. the reason us as kids never did any of this stuff is because the kids tv we were watching didn’t have adults telling us that the newest skincare product was a must-have like tiktok does.

You might want to talk with your parents about this so they stop giving her the means to keep buying stuff she doesn't use up. Yes she will probably throw a tantrum about it. But she should learn she can't always get everything she wants. And if she really wants something she will have to save up money for it. That last bit is something my parents did with me growing up. If i wanted something it was either a birthday present. Or I'd have to save up. Sometimes it was a special occasion. But you get the point. You need to talk to them about it.

I don’t actually think that solves anything. If her parents stop giving her money, she may find other means in which she can purchase those items. @@user-pz2dq6qt3y what you are saying is also true. but if the parents do instill the lessons of saving up money for an item, it will hopefully teach the kid money management and how long it would take to buy something. like as a kid i wanted a playset of a Toy Line i had. i saved up my birthday money and allowance to purchase that set eventually. which was a lesson in how much stuff i want costs. and yes influencer marketing and such. it's a plague and if the kid steals the parents creditcard. to buy it. expect punishment. if the parents don't write it off as a silly kid thing. so it's really the marketing that's an issue, but also the parents of the kids begging for the item just giving it to them each time they want a thing thats also a problem. and the fact more places expect you to pay with a Credit/Debit card also makes people unaware on how much they really are spending. unlike paying in cash. kids have no idea how much something truly costs till they try and purchase something for themselves. could be as simple as giving them a 10 bill and saying they can pick something for that amount. but of course guiding them.

In this case though since it's children and not pets. I'd say it's both the children and parents faults because the children should know better and should have some common sense and knowledge at like the age of 10 to be respectful and kind and not spoiled bratz who don't get everything they want (like lululemons and drunk whatever dew elephant and some retarded 60 dollar stanley cup when you could just get a walmart cup for like couple bucks) but it's also parents faults for not disciplining and setting rules/guidelines/restrictions/boundaries for their children and less screen time. They are just letting them do whatever they want whenever they want and trying to be friends with their children rather than parents. So it's both who are in the wrong.

If I had a kid who wanted Drunk Elephant, I’d probably look at her like she’d lost her mind. “When you’re a grownup earning your own money you can buy it, but that’s too expensive even for me to buy for myself.” All they need at that age, if they’re interested, is a gentle face wash and to get in the habit of using sunscreen every day. This feels like the outgrowth of parents who bought their kids every candy bar they screamed for in the supermarket when they were little, and now they’re throwing tantrums for DE and Lulu. And the kids are on their devices all the time? Their parents probably are too. @@toreeyaki tbh the old claire’s in my mall would be peak nostalgic if it was still open bc the store itself was never remodeled. It’s still there in its purple tile and blue neon glory.

I'm in my 30's and just recently started going to Claire's again. I just need a hit of nostalgia nowadays. Also, I love the accessories Claire's has.

i (21) honestly shop at claire's both because nostalgia and because it's the only place that sells earrings i can wear without breaking my wallet. which, given these girls can shop at fucking sephora (when I had to do more skincare stuff as a kid, I went there once and literally left after five minutes) the wallet part probably isn't an issue.

What is a 10-year-old even doing at Sephora, like dear child, you don't need to think about skincare or makeup.

@@LianeCarinawait, people stopped playing with dolls at 10?! Like they’re still children then! I still played with my Barbie’s even when I was past 10 years old. In fact, I don’t think I stopped playing with dolls until sometime after I graduated the fifth grade.

My little sister is doing this and it honestly makes me sick. I keep trying to tell my parents to stop her but they tell her that she “isn’t hurting anything”. Not only that, but she’s also obviously damaging her skin and giving herself acne by over using product and wearing too much makeup. I’m only a few years older than her but the effect that TikTok and the culture around her is having is so sad. Gen alpha, man. Idk what to do about them.

Tell your parents that they’re stupid for allowing this and that she’s gonna heavily damage herself, not just the stores. I’m really ashamed of my generation.

same. my sister is only 10 and the way she talks about her make-up and routines is insane.

Tell your parents they can either deal w/her tantrums now OR have to spend extra $$ to heal the chemical burns/scarring on her face. I hope she doesn’t get facial scarring but using too many harsh products on young skin isn’t good.

Why your sister is allowed on Tiktok in the first place? Aren’t the users have to be 13+ in the first place?

I when to the mall yesterday with my friend and this is unfortunately still a problem. A 10 year old looking kid grabbed one of the tester lipsticks out of my hand and then made a mess with it.

The suggestion to parents is actually very good. My mom always taught me stuff and tried to answer my questions all the time. She always let me use her makeup when i was in HOME. She said when i was old enough i could use her makeup outside as much as i wanted and i trusted her. She made me trust her and made me realize that if im patient ill get what i want.
